@Screaming Mimi's Objection #2: Israel is not innocent and the servant is righteous / innocent. This is the #1 problem that Christians have with the Jewish interpretation of Isaiah 53. They claim that the servant in Isaiah 53 is innocent and so cannot be Israel because we all agree that Israel was in exile due to her sins. This objection has two parts to it, so let me address each one. Israel is not innocent: Here they bring many verses like Isaiah 1 among many others. We have, of course, agreed that Israel was not sinless. However I pointed out in part two on the verse 53:10, the use of the Asham indicates that the servant was suffering in atonement for his OWN SINS, and not for others. Obviously the servant was a sinner. Likewise when discussing the Asham, I pointed out that this does not show that the person was sinless or perfect, as that was not a requirement of the animal itself. The Servant had to be righteous: This is backed up by the words of Isaiah 53:4-6 indicating that the suffering was for the sins of others. But this does not change the facts that 4-6 are the words of the nations, and the view the Christians take on these verses is one that is false. As I showed in article three it is the nations, taking this view, who do not understand God’s purpose in allowing the servant to suffer, as I explained in article two. Sometimes verse 53:9 is mentioned but that refers to the servant being innocent of the suffering caused by the nations. Israel was to be in exile, but the persecution of the nations was not part of it, as I pointed out in the beginning of the third article. Objection #3: Israel is not righteous because they have sinned. The main problem is that many people are called righteous even if they have sinned; there is no contradiction in that. In fact Ecclesiastes 7:20 says that there is no one who is righteous who does not sin. Even John the Baptist’s parents are called righteous in the New Testament and no one claims they were sinless. This verse has six parts to it, and it is useful to look at each one of them: 1. The first two points in this verse are usually ignored, but give significant supporting evidence to the contention that the servant is Israel. That Israel will have an increase in physical possessions appears in many verses, especially in Isaiah 40 - 66. However there is some specific language here that indicates that these possessions will come as spoils or plunder, not as a natural increase of wealth. However, we do find some passages where these possessions will be acquired as wealth taken/returned from the nations: Isa 33:21. But there, the Lord is mighty for us; a place of broad rivers and streams, where a galley with oars shall not go, and a great ship shall not pass. 22. For HaShem is our judge; HaShem is our ruler; HaShem is our king; He shall save us. 23. I will discuss that verse more in the third part, when I discuss what the nations have to say about Israel’s suffering and compare it to what God has said about it. The final point is also an unusual one that many do not seem to understand. But it is explicit in God’s instructions for the Jewish people in exile as it appears in the prophet Jeremiah 27: 27:5. A comparison of 52:15 and 53:1-3 shows that they express the same idea from two different perspectives. 53:1 is in the first person, so the speaker there is the same one referenced in 52:15. The subject in 52:15 is the kings of nations. This means that the speaker from 53:1 is the nations. Can't conflate the speaker of Isaiah 53:1-9, the leaders of nations, with God. What the nations say right after realizing they erred, is only their opinion. Can't read Xristian theology into Isaiah. It's not there. The Nations are oppressing Israel as unintended by G-d, Isa 40, Zech 1:15. Throughout Isaiah it is Israel who will be exalted and vindicated on that day and her enemies that will be shamed (Isaiah 26:2; 29:23; 30:26; 34:8; 41:11; 54:17; 60:2,14,15; 62:2;). In the Levitical service, Asham is only offered by the perpetrator of the violation for their personal transgression. Asham is never a communal offering in the Levitical service.The servant in Isaiah 53:8 acknowledges their own guilt. But NT claims Jesus never sinned, so the passage is not about such a person that supposedly never sinned. A person who never sinned is a contradiction of scripture. Eccl 7:20 there is no righteous man on earth who does good and sins not. 1Kings 8:46 there is no one who does not sin Offerings are brought up, according to the torah, can’t give an offering for someone else, and a human is not a valid offering for a guilty offering, so Jesus offering himself for others is ruled out, whilst the servant recognizing his own guilt is in line with the torah. The only other time God has pleasure in affliction is in Deut Lev 26, is about Israel. The word ‘deaths’ is plural in verse 9 There is no reason to say this is not about Israel, since in each generation the whole people die in exile. There is no verse which tells of a resurrection. They need to manufacture this, because unless we are talking about an eternal people, who can be killed and suffer and still endure, the verses make no sense. This point is made clear in Psalms 44:23: “For your sake we are killed every day”. Nobody but an eternal people can be killed daily and still exist. Only if we are talking about a people as a whole can we say they suffer and die, and yet endure. ‘the Land of the living’ in verse 8 means death. There is no problem with assuming death in that verse, but the correct translation of the Hebrew ארץ חיים is ‘the living land’. The same word as here appears in Ezekiel 26:30 where it refers to “and I shall set glory in the living land” (i.e. the land of Israel) It is a clear allusion to the exile by the nations, who are the speaker in that verse. NT Jesus does not meet the criteria set for the servant of Isa 53 in the phrase "had done no violence." NT Jesus's violence violated others' property and livelihood. Moneychangers, pigs, fig tree. Falsehoods are found, out of Jesus' mouth. NT contradicts torah and claims Jesus never sinned. NT Jesus does not meet the criteria set in Isa 53:10. Jesus did not admit to have ever sinned. Here is the truth about Isaiah 53, This whole chapter referred to the "descendants of Jacob"" as the "Suffering Servant" or "He/Him" as Jacob READ the Context please! Here is why. Well, our patriarch Jacob was named "israel"after he became blessed by Hashem when he fought the angel of Hashem. So, Isaiah 53 refers to Jacob (He/HIM) as ISRAEL. Christianity ( represented by all the nations in a religious context) has been the main enemy of Israel by massively murdering , despising, afflicting the Jewish people because they refused to convert into Christianity. So when the wrath of God comes to the nations in the end times , Isaiah warned the nations as the audience...what excuse would they have by oppressing God's people??? Isaiah is making a big statement not only for the nations but also to the remnant of Israel who were dispersed among the nations giving comfort to his people that Israel will be exalted among the nations for all the oppression and suffering Israel went through as exiles among the nations. . Israel are the anointed witnesses and Servant of the Most High Almighty upon this earth. Isaiah 43:1, 3 -7, and 10 verse 4 God said that he will give people in exchange for Israel as a ransom. ? exactly. Hashem will turn the table in the end times against the nations. Isaiah 53 has absolutely nothing to do with a human blood sacrifice by a Jewish man AKA “Jesus” as the atonement needless to say to replace the covenant of Israel for a new one. As matter of fact, Isaiah 53 never mentioned nothing about a human blood sacrifice to atone for sins in order to receive forgiveness. What verse says that? The concept that a righteous person’s death can function as an atonement is found in Jewish literature outside the New Testament. For example, in 4 Maccabees 6:27-28, the Jewish leader, Eleazar makes the following statement before his execution by Antiochus IV, “You know, O God, that though I could have saved myself I am dying in these fiery torments for the sake of the law. Be merciful to your people and let our punishment be a satisfaction on their behalf. Make my blood their purification and take my life as a ransom for theirs.” His words hearken back to Lev 17:11 - where one life atones for the life of another. There is no Temple to perform sacrifices, including the sacrifices on Yom Kippur which makes atonement for sin. So Eleazar offers his life as a substitute to these sacrifices and asks that his death would bring atonement to Israel. Neither Isaiah 53, nor the New Testament teaches that God replaced his covenant with Israel.

Two examples are *Isaiah **48:12**-16* and *Isaiah 63:7-14* Because of the significance of the first passage *(Isaiah **48:12**-16),* it will be quoted: "Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, My called: I am He, I am the First, I am also the Last. Indeed My hand also has laid the foundation of the earth, and My right hand has stretched out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand up together. All of you, assemble yourselves, and hear! Here is the Tri-unity as clearly defined as the Hebrew Scriptures make it. *In the second passage (Isaiah 63:7-14),* there is a reflection back to the time of the Exodus where all three personalities were present and active. The Lord YHVH is referred to in verse 7, the Angel of YHVH in verse 9 and the Spirit of God in verses 10, 11 and 14. While often throughout the Hebrew Scriptures God refers to Himself as being the one solely responsible for Israel's redemption from Egypt, in this passage three personalities are given credit for it. Yet, no contradiction is seen since all three comprise the unity of the one Godhead.

Please start with Isaiah 41. You will conclude that the suffering servant is Jacob-Israel as a nation. The Catholic, protestant, and charismatic church doctrines will teach you that this is a clear reference to Jesus. If you read the references I have listed, you may conclude differently. If Dr. Brown is right about Isaiah 53 being about Jesus and that Jesus was the Messiah, then God was and is a liar. As He did with Abraham, God told David and his son, Solomon that the Messiah would come thru their "seed" (zera). However, Paul says "Let God be true and every man a liar." If we're to believe that if that Isaiah 53 is talking about the messiah. Are we then supposed to believe that Jesus had children as verse 10 says "Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days,? I think the more logical approach is the prophet was speaking about Israel as a nation not an individual.

Hi Tony, Dr. Brown has responded to that objection in Objection 4.17 in his third volume of "Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus." Let me summarize. First, the Hebrew says that the Messiah will "see seed" (יִרְאֶ֥ה זֶ֖רַע). This is the only occurrence of the phrase in the Scriptures. It does not say "see HIS seed" (that is an interpretive gloss), so it need not refer to the servant's own offspring. Secondly, the word for seed, zera, is often used literally of semen, and often used literally/figuratively about one's descendants, but these are not the only uses of the word. Isaiah himself uses zera in a figurative way in Isaiah 1:4, 14:20, and 57:3-4. In these passages it can refer to "community" - thus, the servant will see a righteous community after his death. Psalm 22:30-31 also uses zera figuratively, referring to a future generation. Thus this usage would mean that the servant will see a future generation after his death. So while it is plausible that this is talking about physical descendants, it is not a necessary interpretation, and when combined with the evidence elsewhere for an individual/Messianic interpretation, we believe the figurative understanding fits best.

Thank you for your reply. I am neither Christian or Jewish, I'm a descendant of the American Indian. When I enter the spirit world to talk to the Creator of the universe. I thank him for all that he is created and all that he is given us. I have studied most of the religions of man, and enjoy listening to discussions of the Creator and what other people believe. Christians claim to follow a Jewish messiah, but their actions to not seem to follow the instructions of their leader. And in all fairness as the same could be said for the Jewish community who claims to have heard from the Creator and yet do not follow his instructions. I am not impressed by what people say they believe, as their beliefs very seldom follow their actions. When I believe that the Creator of the universe and this world will judge all men by their knowledge and actions. It is the duty of the Elders to teach the young ones a respect for nature and people. Most importantly, to worship the Creator in spirit and truth. That find nothing the matter with the teachings of Christianity and Judaism. Without trying to be too judgmental most of the Christians and Jews do not live by the instructions handed down by either God. If somebody is going to try to convert me to their religious beliefs, then practice of their religious beliefs is what I expect. To believe it is written in the Christian bible in the new testament but if you'd love God you will keep his commandments. And I believe it also says that the Jewish bible. If neither of you Christians or Jews followed the instructions of your Creator (your God), I find it almost laughable that you expect others to believe you have heard from the creator, and we should following your beliefs and religion.

I think a better question is....Who else's life is capable of being an "Offering for Sin" as it says...I only know of One who is capable. Israel the Nation is full of Sins, they cant carry another persons sins that's absolutely ridiculous !! Sin offerings are pure and sinless....That's the Rashi theory he invented in the 11th Century to reject Jesus.....Jesus was despised and Rejected Rejected Rejected as the verse says by his own people.

I love how he asserted that vicarious atonement is actually a Jewish idea yet didn't cite a single verse of scripture to prove this. Instead he just went on a rant about his bar mitzvah, to remind the audience he is Jewish. There are zero old testament scriptures that say that vicarious atonement is a thing, yet numerous that speak against it.

@@birdingwithjohn5545 there are three main purposes to the kaebonot (Jewish animal sacrifice). The first is showing gratitude to God, the second is communing with God and the third is as PART of an atonement for sin.... But this atonement is only for unintentional sin. For example you didn't know there was pork in the stew (just making something up). But even this form of sacrifice is useless without repentance. Actually there is a verse in the old testament (and I'm sorry I don't have one with me) where it is made clear that God prefers repentance over sacrifice.

@@birdingwithjohn5545 oh and just one more point. In Ezekiel 45:22 it reads And upon that day shall the prince prepare for himself and for all the people of the land a bullock for a sin offering. (KJV for your benefit) Now this is an undisputed Messianic passage (both Jews and Christians agree) about how the Messiah will bring an offering for sin in the third temple. But please remember this can only be for unintentional sin as is discussed in Exodus. Why would a sinless Messiah/God such as the Christian Jesus need to bring a sacrifice for his own sin?
