I do card tricks and I already knew the cards were setup. Anytime they don’t shuffle the deck first, the cards are setup, basic card magic.

i take 10% only of your first explanation for the card in a shoe part, if there are 16 combinations between two numbers from 1 to 4, the trick isn't about arranging the cards only but only knowing how to arrange them in a short period of time, without knowing the two numbers that where to be used, you would probably need slight of hands to pick out the right deck of cards

It may be a self working card trick, but someone had to think it up and practice it until it worked flawlessly. I tend to throw shuffles and cuts into a self working card trick just to make it a little bit more difficult for people to work out.

But that way trick only works if he chooses the 9th card or the 2nd card etc. What if penn had said 2 for that 1st nmbr, the 3rd card that he'd lay down as a queen wouldve been blank?

I actually figured out the counting part leading to the queens and aces being in position but it seemed so obvious that I thought I had to be wrong or else Penn and Teller would have figured it out instantly! In fact, I still keep thinking that what's actually happening isn't the same as the way I'm thinking it is!

@@jimmynuccini8783 That's a very good point you make. Chris Capehart is their old friend, and he definitely knows the exact rules of the show as well. I wouldn't be surprised if he deliberately set up that last part of the trick for maximum impact on the audience reaction, even knowing that Penn and Teller would figure that part out. He knows that it's still a successful "Fooled Us" because they likely wouldn't figure out the first part from a single demonstration. If so, that would make his mastery of showmanship even more impressive.

What i first noticed about this trick when i saw it a while back, was that if the people(Penn and Teller in this case) had chosen higher numbers(say they chose 9 every time) i think he would have run out of cards, since he only had four left at the end.

It doesnt matter what they choose, he always gets rids of 11 cards, what i question what would have happened if one of them stopped at 1

1. He counts from back - 10, 9, 8.. and so on 2. He counts from start 1, 2, 3.. 10+1, 9+2, 8+3 and so on is always 11 So they choosing 9 everytime means he only put 1 card on the table and have 10 in his hands for each section.

Well dont forget, he is counting backwards from 10, dealing them. So if one of them chose one the queen would be put on and then drop the ace below.

This trick will not work if they would have said stop at one. Because that would be the tenth card or ace. Now you can only place one card down. The queen. But the ace is now mixed in with the blank cards ruining the set up and trick. That's why Chris got nervous when TELLER told him to stop at 2. He lucked out.

This is a self working card trick. Just arrange the deck as told and it will work.

First part is wrong. Chris had Penn go through the entire deck and turn all cards over to show there was only 1 7 of hearts in the deck.

He doesn't have Penn go through the entire deck. _He constructs the performance so that this is the impression left in spectators' minds._ After Penn has counted 23 cards and put one to the side, Chris says "You saw the whole deck" (which isn't true), and then asks him to "turn the rest of them over", but in fact he only lets Penn turn over a few more cards before he starts rushing him, implying that Penn doesn't understand his instructions. Then he takes the cards away from Penn, saying "I'll take 'em for you, obviously you have issues". He get's a good laugh for this, and at the end, most spectators "remember" that Penn went through the whole deck, although it never happened.

It's weird that Pen and Teller are so bad with self working card tricks. I didn't get it also when i watched it, but the explanation is very simple, and an experienced magician should have notice Chris always placing the 10th and 11th card, no matter when they stop him.

On the rare chance that someone picked a one I think that part would simply be eliminated from the trick. On the other hand if that happened I don't know what you would do about getting the aces out of the way to show off all the blank cards at the end...
