shekhar bista but the problem was Gayle was all blast and not the talent of Lara, deciding what shot was worthy of been put away. If Gayle learnt the combination of temperament and control and placement, then he added with that dominance power. He would’ve in my mind been greater then Lara. He had the opportunity, but never adjusted to the conditions. That’s why Gayle was extremely vulnerable to change of pace.

@@clubberlang589 That's just nonsense. Gayle scored 2 centuries in SA in Tests against Ntini. There was Gayle in SA one leg looking(hamstring) to move the game on blasting a raging Steyn. He scored 2 centuries in Tests in Australia. A younger Chris Gayle scored half centuries in New Zealand against Shane Bond and the swinging ball while everybody else an aging but still capable Lara included. ALL batsmen are vulnerable to good bowling but they will also put down good scores against quality bowling. If anything early Chris Gayle struggled against spin and was limited to the offside in his strokeplay. You don't score 2 Test triples, 165 n.o. and 102 in Aus against a Mitchell Johnson led Australia and can't play pace. Go check the youtube vid of him blasting Shoaib and Waqar. If you said vulnerable to swing bowling- u would have a point.

Michael Maxwell I’m not saying Gayle has no talent I’m saying is he needed to know the balancing act of when to be calculating and when to be aggressive. Gayle thought every delivery faced was to be smashed. Sometimes more than often it out did him. But he was an awesome opening batsman

Yes there have been occasions later on when he would blast from the get go but generally that was not the case even in T20s. There are many Gayle innings littered with slow starts and accelerating afterward. Many can be found right here on youtube. SA S/R of 60 in Tests and 86 in ODIs really gives lie to the idea that he was simply a blaster.
