The most underrated Goalie in history. Sure Ozzie gave up some weak ones but the dude was lights out when he absolutely had to be. As a wings fan I've always felt like he got a bad rap. It's ridiculous that he's not in the Hall. We Love you Osgood, from the D!

Roy, Brodour, Hasek... All those guys are guilty of letting in weak goals. Osgood was also the youngest goalie to reach 100 wins. Ozzy deserves his spot in the HOF! During his summers he still played golf with Ken Holland and the upper management while he was on other teams. Never once did he ask to come back or beg to be a Red Wing again. He bidded his time. When the opportunity presented itself, he was ready to be a Wing again. Total class act. Hard to beat. Gave his all every time he was in the net...

Chris Osgood deserves to in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Just googled it: Ozzie "is the only goalie in NHL history to win more than 400 (401) games and lose fewer than 250." Now that deserves recognition. This should be a slam dunk for the Hall of Fame select board. And Ozzie was a 3-time Stanley Cup winner, each time with the Wings.... Quit stalling and put Ozzie in the Hockey Hall of Fame....

Couldn't agree more! Ozzy has earned his place in the HOF. He was shit on so much, but despite that, remained loyal to the game, and to his teammates. He is one of the greatest goaltenders of all time.

Of all the goalies that have come into the league in the last 50 years, (since 72') only 5 are in the Hall right now. Roy, Belfour, Hasek, Brodeur, and Fuhr. That's insane, especially when you look at the long list of goalies in the Hall from like 1900-1930. I don't even know who they are mostly. Lol. Ozzie belongs, so does Joseph, Vernon and possibly a few others like Barrasso, Thomas, Moog, etc. Joseph isn't in because he couldn't win a cup with Detroit, but Osgood won two as a starter, and Vernon won one and the Smythe, and yet they're not in.. hilarious. It's going to interesting in the next few years, starting this year with Luongo being up for consideration. If Joseph isn't in, why should Luongo get in? Guys like Lundquist, Rinne and they Quick, Fleury, and others will be up soon too. Fleury kinda resembles Osgood in some ways. I don't know, I'm done rambling lol

Vernon and Hasek each won 1 cup in Detroit. Osgood won two and led the team to the finals 3 times. No disrespect to vernie and dom, I liked them too, but when you look at it from a success standpoint, osgood was the best goalie in Detroit when he played and he even had a size disadvantage! It’s a shame of how under appreciated he was. And that’s all I have to say other than OZZY! OZZY!

I was born in 84, and started being a big hockey fan after watching the rangers win in 94 and living in Michigan I started rooting for the wings. I remember them going against the devils in 95, and riding the late 90s and early 00s wave with the wings. It was awesome. In 1995 though I started collecting Osgood and Fedorov hockey cards. Two players I consider on the same par within their respective positions. Osgood especially was my favorite even though he wasn’t their main, he should have been. Just his longevity and dedication to the wings is amazing, well almost as amazing as his goaltending. It made me so happy how he contributed to the 08 cup.

30# Chris Osgood is such an iconic NHL goalkeeper. And yet he is at the very same time never considered one of the best of his time, despite near evrey season delivering decent to great numbers that satisfied his team & Red Wing's supporters. Just speaking about his iconic classic goalie helmet and he is instantly recognized by casuals. However, he have fallen on to an unstable platform that repetedly have questioned him how "Good" he really was both then during his career and after his career. Its hard to make justice for Osgood's case in general and the only agreed positioning he have is that he was "never a bad goalie", but that leaves the debate field very wide open for all kinds of "proos" and "cons" and that is the case of why he is left on that unstable platform. Common critisism arguments that involves his career are; - Osgood was good enough, but he always played on a strong team(s) with the dynasty Red Wings. - Osgood in his Red Wings career always had top level of defensive protection both from the elite level defenders (Lidstrom, Murphy, Coffey, Chelios, Fetisov etc) and forwards (Federov, Yzerman, Larionov, Holmstrom, Shannahan etc) so he was rarely tested on his own. - Osgood was only a couple of times an All-Star goalkeeper and never was selected to represent Team Canada in the Olympics or World Cup or World Championships. While those are arguments that are hard to question/contest, Osgood did however prove pulling his own weight (at least IMO) when he was traded to the NY Islanders. Remember, the Islanders of the middle 90's to late 00's was NEVER a stable team and often came up short in the play-offs with early exits or missed the play-offs all togheter and no elite level players wanted to set there foot inside the team unless they where paid a boat load of money. Osgood near on his own lifted them up from a bottom position season prior to a 5th Eastern rank and delivered many solid performances that made you really re-think how good he was. Still when you (Red Wings) was offered the possibility to have on there teams elite level of goalies like Mike Vernon, Dominik Hasek & Curtis "Cujo" Joseph, Osgood just felt not good enough - or special enough to keep. So he repetedly got the shorter stick. AND YET...he never lost faith in himself and never acted out in anger like most top goalies have at one point or two done in there careers when replaced. Many goalkeepers have near given up when replaced twice. And Osgood was in THREE TIMES! He was always accepting it gracefully and like a good teammate. He was always working his best to be at the best level he could and always worked hard to give confidence to his teammates and coaches. That was a streanght he is not given credit for, or at least not enough.

Beautifully written. Very good point on how many goalies would be able to recover from being given up on more than once. What a special goalie, nay what a special human being.

He was replaced twice on the Wings, but I wouldn't even call Vernon his replacement, he got plenty of playing time the three seasons Vernon was there. Vernon got the nod for the cup run of '97 due to experience, but was traded that offseason, because Holland felt it was Ozzie's time. Until the '00-'01 offseason when he was waived to make room for Hasek, but Holland wasn't actively trying to replace him, he fully expected to go into the next season with Ozzie. Hasek landed in Holland's lap when Hasek told his agent he wanted a trade to Detroit and to make it happen. Holland would have been a fool to turn that down. Hell, any GM without a goalie named Brodeur or Roy (although i think Hasek in his prime was better than both) would have been a fool to. The only other time i can think of him being replaced was in St. Louis (maybe that's the third time your talking about?), when their GM picked up Patrick Lalime, who he thought was better than Osgood (quickly proven wrong), despite Osgood playing well with a winning record. Ended up back in Detroit, and by then Cujo was long gone. Legace had the starting job already but melted down in the '06 playoffs and was let go that offseason. Hasek came back to split time with Ozzie, but Hasek started in the playoffs, which makes sense since he's Hasek. Next year same thing, except Hasek blew a 2 game lead in the first round and Ozzie came in. Never left the net again on the way to his third Cup. In the end, you could say he had a hand in Hasek retiring for the second time.

Osgood whether he was as good as hasek was the best goalie detroit has ever had. He played the longest in the D out of any net minder we had and had great stats plus he was the only goalie we had who won more than one cup here. Great video, you did some great research. There's surprising few that know he went to Bandit's goalie school in 08 and it produced great results. Justin Goldman of "thegoalieguild" had a section for "Enigma's" in his "Periodic Table of Goaltending", He has an entry for Osgood or (Oz) in this case, "An enigmatic and exquisite element that embraces and captures the essence of Chris Osgood. This includes hidden levels of mental toughness and the ability to camouflage their true positive elements by visibly appearing weaker or less potent than they truly are." Vernon was a tonic for Osgood and it was great to see that work out as great as it did. I feel Osgood carried that on quite well with Jimmy Howard when it was time.
