The thing about Poland I never realized before is that his shred is as musical and controlled as the slow stuff he plays. There's a flow to all of it, and it's all good. Most shredders have a tendency to sound like "okay here's the slow part, and now here's a fast part from my practice routine trickbook" - kind of uninspired and contrived. Chris plays more like a saxophone player, his solos take you somewhere interesting every time.
@thomaszonkowski21157 жыл бұрын
I really like both of these guys for their unpredictability and the unusual ability for speed and phrasing. Most shredder types flurry away and its like I'm being sand blasted. Listening to this video I'm stupefied to find similarities between them. I love Chris Poland's tone on the Rust in Piece demos. Poland has become an animal in his old age.
@druid21317 жыл бұрын

His ability to bend notes so fucking pitch perfect is astonishing, to the point that he sounds almost like the pitch-shift function on a keyboard, his microtonals especially are unrivalled. Chris hits bends that can emulate a floating trem, almost alien sounding shit, and all played effortlessly clean with complete control, orgasmic tone and feeling. Yeah, he's liquid fast too but all with consideration of the music. Seriously, go check his solo stuff, especially Chasing The Sun, that album is crammed full of amazing playing and an arse load of euphoric notes that will have you rewinding for more! I have seen Megadeth live with Broderick and with Kiko. Broderick is an amazingly accomplished player in his own right, but frankly his style didn't really fit Megadeth very well. He's much better in bands like Nevermore. Kiko, on the other hand, really seems to fit in well. Everything meshes. I don't know if you've seen them live lately, but they sound better now than they have in a very long time, which was quite a surprise to me.
@uchihamustaine8 жыл бұрын
Mainly because Broderick is a technical monster. (which does not mean Kiko is not an amazing player) Broderick is really more suitable with complicated progressive metal bands, whereas Kiko is fitting more melodic stuff. This is why Kiko is between Poland and Friedman. Friedman was so melodic and Poland was a jazz influenced legend. Kiko has some elements from both of them without question. But Chris Broderick is easily the most technical guitarist Megadeth ever had. Perhaps his style is generally not so juicy because he likes some godlike speed and accuracy with enough melody. At the end of the day, yeah, Kiko fits better for Megadeth. And as a Megadeth fan, I prefer Broderick as a lead guitarist because his style fits me lol
@nickwaters17017 жыл бұрын
Kiko's the only best Megadeth lead guitarist since Poland and Friedman. Broderick isn't that good when it comes to musicality. Even Kirk Hammett is superior to Broderick when it comes to musicality.

Chris Poland, hands down. Friedman is amazingly precise, but Poland has this grittyness/anger to his playing that's absolutely perfect.

Chris Poland released Return To Metalopolis back in 1990. This to me was my favorite metal instrumental album throughout the 90s, 2K, and 10s, not necessarily in terms of the guitar chops, but mainly in the strength of the compositions and arrangements that by my taste MF has yet to even come close since Speed Metal Symphony.

@kevins.38257 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is difficult for me to pick. When I met Marty he told be that a lot of his bending he got from Brian May and I can hear it now. Chris Poland has a great chromatic roll so to speak with vibrato at the end, Marty has a great middle eastern vibe with sad melody and excellent bends. I purchased the first Megadeth album when it came out at tower records and play guitar, been a fan for many years. What I will say about Poland and Marty is that they are very creative and don't just sound like some guy who was classically trained or went to MIT/GTI. Chris Broderick is flawless in replaying the solos of Poland and Friedman, but I don't care much for his original material.

“I hated copying his stuff, I couldn’t do it. It was just too alien. Like any, you know, super musician, they’ve got their own stamp on it and there’s no way for one person to step into that other person’s shoes. It’s impossible. I love his playing. I hated trying to copy that. Just a super, super guitar player, and a great guy, too. We toured together once.” - Marty Friedman on Chris Poland

Poland's just ripps! Amazing tone and bends, a very stylistic player. Friedman is a monster also! Their by far the two best players!

Great vid. Poland’s vibrato and bends its otherworldly. And that tone...
@Roger81765 жыл бұрын
Both are absolutely mind blowing and unique. The fact that Poland was on heroin for most of this probably make me give him the nod (get it...the nod...get it) in this contest. Another interesting fact. Friedman is so goddamn accurate. It is said that he never hit a single incorrect note live until the 34th show on the Youthanasia tour. That is 4 years into his career with Megadeth! Not a single mistake made live before that. Amazing!

@zekethomas31086 жыл бұрын
aarroneous he just has access to the stems, the way most metal is recorded(idk about other genres though, my tastes are mainly metal) is recording each instrument individually and then mixing the stems into one song
@Roger81765 жыл бұрын
They are most likely from the Guitar Hero & Rock Band games. That was the really cool thing about those games. They gave the public access to these individual tracks that they otherwise never would have been able to get. As far as obtaining them now...you just have to look online or KZbin. I got mine off of torrent sites years ago, but there don't seem to be as many around these days. They are really interesting to listen to because you get a better idea of how the songs were crafted. There are also a lot of surprises. Things that sound one way when mixed with the whole band can sound much different to when they are isolated. And obviously they are a blast to play along with. I gamble too much and have been a junkie for 20 years now. Take Care.

Poland fits better but I think Marty is better (?) too hard to choose
@1trkmd6 жыл бұрын
I'm an experienced guitarist myself and the question that I ask myself is which one would I want lessons from? And my answer would be Poland because his playing is smoother and his bends and legato are so seamless and free flowing. I do love Friedman's note choices but I like Poland's smoother picking, I think it's the way Marty holds his pick that makes his tone a bit choppy, lol!
@zolarczakl68154 жыл бұрын
I've always thought of Friedman as the better player, but listening to those solo clips, and the improvised stuff... I actually think Chris is a much more versatile and unique player
@akidk14993 жыл бұрын
Poland always has the same formulae. Bend, ultra fast descending lick with legato. Bend again and that's it. Friedman on the other hand is extremely versatile and unorthodox
