The thing about Poland I never realized before is that his shred is as musical and controlled as the slow stuff he plays. There's a flow to all of it, and it's all good. Most shredders have a tendency to sound like "okay here's the slow part, and now here's a fast part from my practice routine trickbook" - kind of uninspired and contrived. Chris plays more like a saxophone player, his solos take you somewhere interesting every time.

I really like both of these guys for their unpredictability and the unusual ability for speed and phrasing. Most shredder types flurry away and its like I'm being sand blasted. Listening to this video I'm stupefied to find similarities between them. I love Chris Poland's tone on the Rust in Piece demos. Poland has become an animal in his old age.

Yes, per your saxophone comment. Poland has a very strong jazz background. He very much incorporated that into his playing with Megadeth. FYI Mustaine's biography is excellent if you have not read it.

What Dave really did better than Metallica is make sure everyone he worked with, was one of the best in the business. Chris Poland has one of the most fluent legato-sounding styles I have ever heard, and of course Marty Friedman is Marty Friedman.. Enough said. Conclusion: Both are winners, there can be no loser here as both are some of the most Elite rock players out there.

OndskapensHersker completely agree we can have preferences but we can’t compare the two because they are in a entire different class compared to most guitar players and have very different styles. I prefer Chris because I’m more of a jazz guy. There are things Chris can play that Marty can’t do and things only Marty can do. Both are literally blessed with godly gifts and are prime examples of what any band should strive to have as a lead guitar.

Stallion Duck Bassist, only one member is really good, Kirk is very average nowadays, and his solo composition is down the drain, I know drummers better than Lars, and Jame’s vocals have become a bit worse, which comes with age, but his rhythm playing is still top notch. Dave’s rhythm playing is better than some lead playing, all megadeth lead guitarists are top notch, same with the drummers, and Dave Ellefson is like a bassist shredder.

In Megadeth, I like Marty more. But after Megadeth, Chris has demonstrated that he is true guitar genius with amazing soul. There is hardly anyone that can touch Chris Poland as a guitar player, in any genre, just on pure feel and "wit". He is up there with Hendrix, Page, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Santana, George Benson and any other guitar icon you can name. He just hasn't been recognized popularly, that's all.

I like Poland. What a sound. Bluesy and aggressive but not overpowering or mechanical. There is a ton of feel in his playing. Poland's tone and groove is better. There is extreme aggression when it is warranted, but it never overwhelms his playing. Poland knows when to back off. Groove and feel over raw power.

Both are great but I've always been partial to Chris Poland's playing style. His background in the fusion jazz scene gave him one hell of a skill set. Gar Samuelson too. If you're looking for seriously skilled musicians to round out a band, the fusion jazz scene is a good place to find them.

I idolised Marty's uniquely exotic playing as a teenager and still do, but I jumped into the crazy phrasing and unpredictable playing of Poland and just couldn't get enough. His ability to bend notes so fucking pitch perfect is astonishing, to the point that he sounds almost like the pitch-shift function on a keyboard, his microtonals especially are unrivalled. Chris hits bends that can emulate a floating trem, almost alien sounding shit, and all played effortlessly clean with complete control, orgasmic tone and feeling. Yeah, he's liquid fast too but all with consideration of the music. Seriously, go check his solo stuff, especially Chasing The Sun, that album is crammed full of amazing playing and an arse load of euphoric notes that will have you rewinding for more! Seriously underappreciated in the guitar world unfortunately.

Both Poland and Friedman are amazing guitar players , i remember watching poland when he was with Megadeth and he was amazing. It was him and Gar that gave mustaines excellent song writing that extra kick and then came Marty that took it to another level and a different direction than Poland. Not better or worse just different. They are both amazing and to this day still the best guitar players Megadeth has had

Polands style is like a schizophrenic. Not because it is chaotic per se, but because it is so unconventional. What really sticks out to me is his use of bends, and legato. He puts them in the most unpredictable places. His solo all through the intro of Good Mourning just perfectly sums him up. Its not overly technical. But learning to play that all the way through is a feat.

+Led Zeppelin Music 10:42. Poland has fast solos on the first two Megadeth albums because... It is thrash metal. Friedman has a more melodic sound in Megadeth, because RIP was a departure from the thrash metal genre, and moved towards a more progressive metal sound. But hey, to each his own.

There is melody aplenty but maybe not what you are used to hearing. That is not a personal criticism by the way, because although I have a very wide appreciation of music, it took me a long time to really unlock the melodic greatness within many Jazz influenced solos, from the likes of Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale and of course Chris Poland.

I have seen Megadeth live with Broderick and with Kiko. Broderick is an amazingly accomplished player in his own right, but frankly his style didn't really fit Megadeth very well. He's much better in bands like Nevermore. Kiko, on the other hand, really seems to fit in well. Everything meshes. I don't know if you've seen them live lately, but they sound better now than they have in a very long time, which was quite a surprise to me.
@uchihamustaine
@uchihamustaine 8 жыл бұрын
Mainly because Broderick is a technical monster. (which does not mean Kiko is not an amazing player) Broderick is really more suitable with complicated progressive metal bands, whereas Kiko is fitting more melodic stuff. This is why Kiko is between Poland and Friedman. Friedman was so melodic and Poland was a jazz influenced legend. Kiko has some elements from both of them without question. But Chris Broderick is easily the most technical guitarist Megadeth ever had. Perhaps his style is generally not so juicy because he likes some godlike speed and accuracy with enough melody. At the end of the day, yeah, Kiko fits better for Megadeth. And as a Megadeth fan, I prefer Broderick as a lead guitarist because his style fits me lol

Chris Poland released Return To Metalopolis back in 1990. This to me was my favorite metal instrumental album throughout the 90s, 2K, and 10s, not necessarily in terms of the guitar chops, but mainly in the strength of the compositions and arrangements that by my taste MF has yet to even come close since Speed Metal Symphony.

Yeah this is difficult for me to pick. When I met Marty he told be that a lot of his bending he got from Brian May and I can hear it now. Chris Poland has a great chromatic roll so to speak with vibrato at the end, Marty has a great middle eastern vibe with sad melody and excellent bends. I purchased the first Megadeth album when it came out at tower records and play guitar, been a fan for many years. What I will say about Poland and Marty is that they are very creative and don't just sound like some guy who was classically trained or went to MIT/GTI. Chris Broderick is flawless in replaying the solos of Poland and Friedman, but I don't care much for his original material.

Both are absolutely mind blowing and unique. The fact that Poland was on heroin for most of this probably make me give him the nod (get it...the nod...get it) in this contest. Another interesting fact. Friedman is so goddamn accurate. It is said that he never hit a single incorrect note live until the 34th show on the Youthanasia tour. That is 4 years into his career with Megadeth! Not a single mistake made live before that. Amazing!

They are most likely from the Guitar Hero & Rock Band games. That was the really cool thing about those games. They gave the public access to these individual tracks that they otherwise never would have been able to get. As far as obtaining them now...you just have to look online or KZbin. I got mine off of torrent sites years ago, but there don't seem to be as many around these days. They are really interesting to listen to because you get a better idea of how the songs were crafted. There are also a lot of surprises. Things that sound one way when mixed with the whole band can sound much different to when they are isolated. And obviously they are a blast to play along with. I gamble too much and have been a junkie for 20 years now. Take Care.
