Got a Chris Poland story from back in the day: I went to see his band Damn The Machine in Providence and my car got stolen during the show. Chris and his bandmates gave me $75 for a cab ride home and a cab ride for my nephew to get the school the next day. Great guy. Thank you, Chris. I never forgot what you did for me that night.

Oh, man - thanks for this! Chris Poland has been a hero of mine since back in the Killing/Peace days! It's so great to hear his angle on things. That lineup of Megadeth with Chris and Gar is my all time favorite [though I begrudgingly admit Rust is probably their shining moment, from a technical standpoint]. Nothing beats the raw, insane power of those first two albums, especially Peace Sells. Hey, Chris - here's to you, man! The true fans out here never forgot about you!

@@HeathenDance I guess a lot of it has to do with context: 'Killing' made a huge underground splash on release, however there was a lot of other stuff going on which were way more interesting at the time: Exodus, Slayer[!], Possessed, Destruction, Fates Warning, Hirax, Anthrax - but when 'Peace' came out, from purely a musical standpoint, there was really nothing else at that technical level of just pure thrash. It was, and remains, an astounding accomplishment
@HeathenDance

@@electricwizard3000 In my opinion, only Destruction is a great band, out of those that you mentioned. Slayer's solos sound like my drunk uncle trying to play the guitar. I really like Reign in Blood, for the riffs and the drums, though. But it's a very overrated band. It's a product of its time. Slayer was "cool". It's evil, and dark. Megadeth's "Killing" is a guitar festival, as well. The production sucks, indeed. But focusing on the music. The initial riff of the first track alone, is a beast. Intricate, and defying. Not playing safe. The whole album has great and varied riffs and solos. Mechanix is probably the weakest of the bunch, actually. "Peace" isn't more difficult to play on the guitar than "Killing". I guess you are refering to some of its progressive elements. It's a matter of taste. I like the album, it's a quality piece of music. I just don't LOVE it. The chorus of "Devil's Island" is very annoying, though. You can tell that "Peace" was composed and recorded with - ironically - having commercial sales on their mind. It's a lot safer approach, regarding musical structure, choruses, production, tempo, etc. It's a lot easier to listen. My father who likes some hard rock, and early heavy metal can easilly listen to "Peace." But he can''t stand "Killing" or "So Far". Understandable.

Yes, there is no substitute for road chops. Every time I've prepped for live, I've always driven my band to rehearse A LOT. It takes a lot of discipline to get road chops before you hit the road, and recording an album after being on the road definitely has advantages. But that repetition is what gives you unit feel, makes you tight, and it's also where you work out weak parts. Great interview - love this channel. And Peace Sells is a phenomenal album.

I lived up in San Francisco during the glory days of Thrash, and I can tell you that there were a lot of people in a lot of different scenes that were heavily into methamphetamine. Way before there was any kind of a vogue around it thanks to shows like Breaking Bad. In the late '80s, early 90s I was a bicycle messenger in SF, and I would say more than half of the guys that were riding at that time where doing it a little or a lot. It was a well-known fact that Paul Baloff from Exodus had a serious meth problem at certain points. Just like dude said, people either figure it out and get sober or they die. That's the tale of addiction.

Chris is so correct. As a FULL ON amphetamine user for over a decade and having to clean up?....your emotions are so out of whack. Dopamine receptors get fried along the way real bad. You really are blank but completely onto it. I used to get upset cause I'd know a joke was funny but you couldn't even conjure (no pun) up a laugh. Such a long agonising process. To those that have made it out the other side, I salute big time. As for Poland and his guitar work...duuude, no point trying to put it into words. Unique and ripping definitely come to mind though. I always wondered and it blows my mind that bands like Megadeth, Jimmy Chamberlin of the smashing pumpkins and Ministry were hardcore heroin addicts and were on the road in a diff city every day but still managed to keep up with their habit. pretty interesting that Poland was very honest and neutral about Mustaine's guitar style. He wasn't praising him beyond belief or sucking up or anything -- just a very level-headed and straight-up cool analysis! :)

Met him and Dave Jr back in the day across the street from the Stone night club......both of them are gone out of the band but they where pretty down to earth guys sorry to see them out of the band because they was the line up that made that era a classic.

The first time I saw Megadeth was with Mike Albert on guitar opening for Exciter. The next time was in a tiny club a few months later. I’m not sure if Chris was back with them yet.

Chris Poland has done a lot of good things in metal outside of his errors while abusing drugs… this guy is a redeemable character he’s got all kinds of great traits and a great band in OHM. Chris is a great band mate.

One of Megadeth's most underrated albums. Funny because that was like the big comeback record and I feel like it's since fallen into obscurity. To me, it is/was very significant.

Legal ones slip under the radar a lot. Crap needs to be taught in school more. We had D.A.R.E., but it needs to be more comprehensive on dopamine itself, and having speakers speak that have been through it and made it out the other side.

Great interview! Amazing interview into what allot of the dirty details of what the Hetfield’s and Mustaine’s of the world don’t want to talk about in their early days. Very insightful, thanks man ✌🏼

Mustaine has talked about how their "manager" took half of the $8,000 they were paid to literally buy drugs. But he wasn't a band manager, he was a drug dealer, and Dave said that at that time they assumed all heavy metal band managers were drug dealers. What doesn't get mentioned much is that yes, they were totally ripped off but that happens when you're a full-blown drug addict. Money, like everything else becomes an afterthought. It's probably a good thing they didn't have endless amounts of money in that part of the 80's or they might all be dead now.
