Chris Sharma, Trick or tree (FA), Mont Rebei summer 2020

@tenayaclimbing “Whenever I can get time to go out and do some climbing, it’s just food for the soul,” says @chris_sharma. “It always has been, but now more than ever.”
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, he managed to make a few day missions out to Mont-Rebei-a remote river gorge northwest of Barcelona, Spain-to establish a new deep-water-soloing line. “It’s such a free form of climbing. You’re out there exploring, and feel like a kid again. It’s very playful, spontaneous, and creative,” he says. Sharma named the route Trick or Tree for the unique finish moves, and suggested a grade of around 8b+ (5.14a).
“It was great to put all the pieces together and have a moment when everything clicks, especially during these challenging times. Reconnecting with that feeling of flow helped me recharge the batteries.”

Does Chris clean these routes on a rope before trying them or is all of his beta acquired through ground (water) up attempts?

They had a rope set up for filming so likely practiced moves on a rope, it's difficult at these grades to only practice from ground up

when it is possible to clean from above I do it, sometimes it is not possible and I fall into the water every attempt
