This was a great tutorial. I really like the WS2815 strips. I've found that an ATX power supply from a PC will also work as a great LED power supply in a pinch. To power on the ATX power supply outside of a PC, you'll need to utilize pins 15 (Black) and 16 (Usually Green) You can use a small piece of wire to 'jump' the two slots on the 24 pin connector to power on the power supply. If you use the 'jump' method, I recommend jumping to two slots BEFORE you plug in the power supply to avoid blowing fuses and sparking. Or, you can do what I did and get a pin pusher to push the pins out of the 24 pin connector, then put a basic, single pole, switch between pins 15(Black) and 16(Usually Green), or simply twist the two pins together and use the power cable to power on the supply. The yellow wires are 12 V, the Red wires are 5 V, and the Orange wires are 3.3 V. All of the black wires are ground. There are tons of online tutorials on using unused PC power supplies for bench top projects. These power supplies provide a ton of available watts for long lengths of LED strips. With having multiple yellow, red, and black wires, you can power 12V and 5V LED strips at the same time using one supply. Have fun everyone and be careful out there. God Bless! 👊

@alunjones3860 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMaherDIY I don't see how they could make 24V strips with individually addressable LEDs. The LEDs are 3V each, so for 24V, six are wired in series, leaving 3V dropped across the resistor, or linear current regulator. I suppose they could pack 6 LED small chips per channel, into each RGB LED package, but that would make it more expensive and I've not seen it before.

@@ChrisMaherDIY You can get 720LED/M FCOB strips from BTF-Lighting that are 24V powered now. They are addressable down to 5cm lengths using WS2811 chips (5cm = 36LEDs). Hang on... how are you powering a 5 meter strip of 60 LED/meter WS2815 lights with a 12v 5A power supply? The BTF websites specs say that each led draws 0.3 watts of power and on a 5 meter strip thats 300 x 0.3 = 90 watts. Am I missing something? Are those actually 30 LED/meter? I'm trying to connect four of these together in parellel and power them accordingly but now I'm worried my wattage is way to the high with the power supply I have in mind.
@coreyevans95436 ай бұрын
Did you figure your issue out? I have similar questions about the power supply. Haven't decided what to go with yet, 5V or 12V LEDs, but whatever the case may be what gauge wire do we use? Is it based off of the volts, amps or watts?
@Octoooo6 ай бұрын
@@coreyevans9543 I soldered on the 18 gauge wires he recommended. If you're just running 1 or two strips then it's not incredibly necessary. I think if you're going for a longer run of multiple strips, I would recommend upgrading the gauge to 18 for less resistance throughout the strip and using a higher voltage strip like the 12 volt over the 5 volt. As a word of advice, try to find tutorials that mimick your own project and goals with that project as much as possible so you make the least mistakes.
@coreyevans95436 ай бұрын
@Octoooo I've been doing some calculations and it seems that the lower 5V set-up is more expensive than the 24V set-up. I need about 13 metres of LEDs, which is around 300 watts. The thing I found that costs more are 5V LEDs and the wire to handle the amps. Did you do price setup comparisons?

Plz tell me what I'm missing here regarding your 12v 5a power supply. You used 2 full 5m strips which appeared to be 60 leds/m. LEDs are 0.3w each so 60 LEDs x 10m = 180W / 12V = 15amps General rule of thumb is to add 20% to the power supply so how are you running those lights (which should be using an 18amp power supply) on a 5a?
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! That's a great question! I don't have the technical knowledge of a lot of people out there yet but my understanding is that led strips recommend power based on max performance. I really have never had the need to run things at full brightness/full white and when running things at lets say 50%, its still very bright and hard to look at. Also, running animations and any other color than white will use far less than the max of what the lights are capable of. I could be way off on my assumptions but I have always been more of a lets plug things in and see what happens type of guy when it comes to playing around with LEDs.

I have a few questions. 1) When we use a mobile phone adapter instead of the voltage reducer that converts 12 volts to 5 volts in the video, would it be sufficient to supply 5 volts from the mini USB input of the ESP module? 2) When we use a telephone adapter, is there a need to apply voltage to other points of the module? 3) How many pins of ESP32 did you connect the green wire to?
@ChrisMaherDIY2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! So I have successfully powered the esp device using an old phone charger which would eliminate the need for the converter. You could then just power the led strip directly with the 12v power. You would still need to connect the gnd to the gnd of the 12v power supply though. I just connected the green data wire to 1 pin of the esp32 module. I believe it was the d4 or d2 pin.

Hi, if i have 4 led strips ws2815 12v (1 in the bathroom ceiling, 2 in the hallway ceiling and 1 under the furnishing of the kitchen that illuminate the stove and the counter). my idea was to alimentate each of his strip with a dedicated power supply and 1 esp32 how you show in this video (so a total of 4 power supply and 4 esp32 controller). could i control them all trough WLED and make them work toghther with the same effect, and have the possibility to create preset with 1, 2, 3, 4 of them toghether or alone? as an example create the "fire" effect in all the house, or create the "wood" effect only in the hallway (so 2 strips), or create the "ocean" effect only in the bathroom. I hope to explain well my question. Thanks for the video
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and great question! Yes you can do that. The only thing I bring up is that when you sync them all together, you can control them all at once but that does not mean that all the 4 sections with the 4 different controllers led strips will act as 1 single long led strip. I doubt that is something you care about but just in case it was I'm not aware of being able to sync them like. As far as the presets you can assign different controllers to different sync groups so that when you change one device it only changes the others in the specific group if that makes sense. You should be able to then set presets for all of this for quick access!

Quick question. Did you use power injection on the other end? Or is the full 10m run just one power source with unnoticable diminish to brightness? I was considering getting a nice big 12 v 15A 180W PSU for my project using 15m of ws2811 but now I am having second thoughts.... Additionally, I am curious to know of it is possible to connect the data wire (green)to 2 led strips and have the same data sent through them I was thinking 5m and 10m( with power injection ) since the big power supply has 3 pairs of +v -v I can use. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
@ChrisMaherDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching and great questions! I did not use power injection on this setup. Just had the power going in at the beging of the first led strip and that's all. If I remember correctly, at 100% brightness and white, I did notice a drop off in color but on every animation or just regular color, it looked great. I also think If I had the brightness set to about 70% and white, I did not notice any drop off in color at that point. And yes you can certainly run the data wire to 2 strips and have them do the same thing. This is called running them in parallels. You can simply split the data line coming from the controller (I love using wago connectors to split the data) and then run the data to whatever strips you have and it should work great!

I'm confused with the pricing of these LED on the Amazon link you provided. It indicates 1 meter 144 LEDs for $39 and 5 meter 150 LEDs for $65. So they're charging an extra $26 for an extra 6 LEDs stretched out over 5 metres?
@ChrisMaherDIY2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! So the 1 meter has a total of 144 LEDs on it. The 5 meters has a total of 150 LEDs on the strip spread out over those 5 meteres which equals out to be 30 LEDs per meter compared to the 144 that the other one has. Hope that helps!

Great video, Chris! I have a question regarding your 12V/5A = 60W power supply recommendation. According to the specifications, a 5M WS2815 LED Strip will take 90W to power (probably at full white with no degradation). If we consider 20% higher (90W *1.2), it will be 108W. Does this theoretically mean we should be using a minimum of a 120W power supply? That is twice as much as what you're recommending. Am I understanding this correctly?
@mattwilson9293 Жыл бұрын
I just installed exactly 5m of this WS2815 strip (144 LED/m) around my walk in shower. Yes, it's a rather big shower. Using WLED to limit power to 2.5amps, this is more than adequate for powering 5 meters. Remember, this is with me using 144led/m strips. Any higher than 4 amps and it becomes offensively bright on all colors, especially white. You dont NEED a 12v10a power supply, but it won't necessarily hurt anything as long as you don't let it try to pump 10amps all the time.

Thanks for watching and great question! So my understanding is that these along with most addressable lights need the data to be connected before they do anything. Led strips that are the basic ones that dont really have data going into it will fire up with power and nothing else but these (at least in my experience) need the data connected as well. Without the data, the lights don't know what to do when plugged in and just stay off. I hope that makes sense!

On the esp32 are you just plugging the +5v into the 5v pin and the gnd to the gnd pin. The same as you would when you would power it via the USB port and the +5v pin and gnd pin would be then connected to the LED strip? I only ask as I tried a 12v power supply using your directions, and it worked for a bit but then the esp32 overheated and the wifi module no longer works. So made me wonder if the pins on the esp32 are connected differently in this configuration.

Is there a driver that doesn't need to convert 2 AC so I can avoid the plug? Thanks for the input dude. It's helping my idea bc closer to reality

Thanks so much for watching and that sounds like an epic project! So I wish i was more knowledgeable on the specific details of the power aspect of things. (I could but I just have not taken the time to really dive into this) I really generally just order a few different power supplies, hook things up on the floor, see how it looks and then go from there in regards to bigger supply, smaller supply or power injections. I have also never done as big of a project that your taking on so I don't have firsthand experience on what to use but trial and error is the best way to go! I'm also not aware of a driver that does not need to convert 2 ac but I can for sure see what that would be helpful! It very well may exist but i've just never looked into that either. My approach with everything is do a little online research, order what I think will be best, test it out and either keep it and use it because it looks nice, or return things, get my money back and try something else. I'm very much a trial and error type of guy so that's usually how I go about doing things. I also don't really have any experience yet on switches or trying to run power to main house supply. Also if using say a 12v power supply at let's say 8amp and I bucked it down to 5v would the amp change?

Also a secondary question to your reply. That mean power can be sent from the end of strip and the other end supply power to our esp at start?

@@Can_I_Have_A_Go Yes, the amps will increase. You need to find what the efficiency is of the buck step converter. Power out = power in * efficiency. So output in your case would be: 12(volts) * 8(amps) * .93(efficiency) = 89.28 watts = 5(volts) * 17.856(amps)

Great tutorial! Why do you wire the backup data line to ground? Wouldn't it be better to wire it parallel to the main data line? What are the pro/contra for either method? Sry for the noob question. Appreciate your channel, thank you!

Would love to find a diagram or detailed tutorial of how to do a long run with these. I’m doing trim of a 50’ rectangular room.

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. It will not integrate with Govee.
