You forgot to mention that particular bow is DL specific. Sure it’s $200, but only if the DL fits. If that new archer buys this, and then finds out it doesn’t fit them, it’ll cost them another $150+ to get the right cam and have it installed. That puts them into the price point of a new Bear or Diamond that is fully adjustable, and has a warranty.

you should do an accuracy test between a whisker biscuit and a drop away rest do about 50 shots of each with the exact same bow same setup just different rest

My dad had that Mathews bow for a long time and killed so many bull elk. It definitely goes to show it’s the shooter and not the bow. Of course technology has helped with many things, but it also goes to show that it doesn’t have to be expensive to get into archery in general today. Awesome video Chris.🤝🏽🐝

My first set up was a $200 Hoyt over 10 years ago . Worked just fine and I liked shooting it so much I bought two more over the years . The newer ones are like lasers and quiet and the difference is huge . So if a person gets good with an old bow going to a newer one is like a dream 👍👍

I understand that this is a older video. My current bow is a Hoyt Rambo from 1986. Got it at a yard sale some 20 years ago as a 12 year old. Never really did anything with it until this year. With it, I am able to hole a 8 shot group in a paper plate at 75 yards. I know it’s now amazing but I’ve only been doing this since January of this year (2023). So yes old school bow still work with old school sights, rests and peeps.

What would be so sweet about that? It’s a perfectly capable bow that was the best bow on the market at one time. It’s not like it’s an old 1980’s cam-less bow that shoots 220 FPS. This bow shoots just as good as a lot of the bows on the market today and thousands of hunters still use this same bow to kill deer every year.
@hunterpardue3215

@@jimlahey3919 It would be awesome to see someone like Chris who can go get whatever bow he wants and whatever equipment he wants, to use something that is very obtainable for the average person. 99% of hunting content that is out there being produced now adays is people shooting brand new off the line bows. So it would be nice to see new content being produced with middle of the road stuff. Some folks might want to see the equipment that they can afford be used to harvest deer because thats what they do.

Just got my first bow in 15years from a pawn shop, was looking at nos v3’s but couldnt stomach a 1500$ rig having not shot in that long. Ended up with a bowtech convergence with everything to hunt and target shot including a halfdozen 300 spine fmj, broadheads, lumknocks etc for 300$. Couldn't be happier!

If anyone who reads this is thinking about getting into archery…I would advise that right out of the gate you spend the money on the best sight, rest, stabilizer, and release you can afford. Those things can easily transfer from bow to bow, and the good ones last forever. I am shooting an old Toxonics Target sight from 2002. It does everything modern sights do (hold a scope and move up and down consistently) and has been on 6 bows that I’ve owned over the years. Same with my stabilizer setup and arrow rest. Buy quality on the accessories, and move them from bow to bow as you progress through the sport. Either that or get you a decent barebow recurve rig and learn to stringwalk. But a quality modern barebow rig will set you back around $750 before arrows. You can get them for less by going with an Olympic Recurve riser, and just shooting it barebow, but you are compromising a bit doing that way. No matter what, have fun flinging arrows.

The first time I shot a Q2, i was amazed by how I felt nothing compared to the dual cam/upright limb bows of the days. That was back in 2001 - 2002. Still have an sq2 that I shoot occasionally, and its amazing how much it vibrates compared to the stuff today, yet felt so dead in hand back then.

So Chris, I still shoot a Matthews FX at 62lbs and still love it.... It shoots about 280fps with 400gr arrows. The Q2 would have been an upgrade for me... lol. I had new cables and string put on last year and I good for another 5-10 years... I used to live in MT and purchased it there back in 2002 or 2003. We used to practice at 65 yds in MT, but I live in PA now, so long shots are much more rare now a days. Glad you are showing people how to get started on a budget.

In Denmark it is illegal to shoot animals father than 25 meters. And when You get your license we are learned that 20 meters should be our maximum.

I bought an '08 Mathews DXT 6 years ago for $250 on Craigslist. It came with a really nice drop away rest, trophy ridge sight, case, stabilizer, arrows and broadheads. For a xouple years I shot it like it was. Killed a mule deer doe both years. Then I bought a new cam to take it from a 29" draw to 30", bought a new string, single pin sight, built some arrows and tuned it. 6 years later, with some tweaking, my bow shoots 85 yards with the single pin. With a 3 pin slider I could easily get out to 95. It's maxed out at 73 lb. I kill a mule deer almost every year. I shoot pretty competitively with the big boys in my area at the range. I'm shooting in my first 3D tournament in 2 weeks. I have high hopes. After this season I'm going to mess with the string and cables to increase draw weight and buy a 3 pin slider. Eventually I'll upgrade to the new mathews platform. Hopefully they come out with an 80 lb option soon.

What a great video, I agree 100%, an old flagship bow is better than a new entry level bow. I have a pair of 2013 Stinger 3G’s that I love, but I picked up a 2008 Mathews Conquest 3 cheap to play with and it shoots and feels like a Ferrari to me! 🤣 I love the simplicity of the solo cams and have fun shooting all 3 now, I shot custom recurves only, for 25 years until I hurt my shoulder so any semi modern compound feels like I’m on the cutting edge of archery technology! I love your channel, you are so good for archery and young shooters, such a selfless archer and role model! I bought a 2007 Diamond Triumph a couple years ago. Came with a Plano hard case, and a dozen Gold Tip Hunter XT 340 arrows. All for $175. Added a new string and cable, a new peep, and a nose button. And with a minor draw length adjustment, I had 3 inch groups at 35 yards after 20 or so shots. Went in to find an X box for my Grandson and walked out with the bow too. I couldn't pass it up.

This is awesome! I tell people all the time that talk about getting into archery to buy a cheap used bow to get started. Pretty much any bow out there will shoot and kill a deer if that’s what you are going for. I still have got my first US made compound bow from my collage years. That is a 2005 PSE Deer Hunter. Probably the most forgotten and the lowest quality bow that PSE ever produced. I still have fun with that. However I have the absolute high end laminated Hungarian bows the Fekete Bég. With the 50# draw weight one I already have several hits on a 100 square foot target area designated with a flag in the middle of it out to 196 yards and I were hit a man size target 262 yards. The 70#-one is on the way. I hope my master finish it and give it to me on the Kurultaj in August. (Take it like a Native American pow wow but 16 countries participate so this ones is a wee bigger). The long range archery I mentioned is a historical competition style based on military target practice of the Hun, Mongolian ect. army in the past. For compound bows I don't think I will ever go any higher. For Hungarian bows I am already on the high end. I can imagine these bows feels for you like cheap fiberglass Hungarian/Turkish/Mongol bows feels for me. I never had a chance to try a flagship compound bow. Or just see one from closer to be honest. So everything you do is pretty interesting for me.

@@OpiatesAndTits I shoot most time arrow on left and tree finger under for long range between 196 and 262 yards. This military style long range archery is my main thing to do. The target is an enemy flag and whoever land the arrows closer to the flagpole is the winner.

I do have an old Hoyt that's not much newer than this old Matthew's. It's a 2006 Trycon XL. Haven't bothered upgrading, as I prefer my Ravin crossbow. Q2 is around 2000-2001ish. I sold them at the shop along with the Q2 XL, MQ32, black max and FX. Find a Black Max if want to try an old speed bow.

I got into archery/bow hunting about 3 years ago and I bought this same bow off a guy I worked with, new string/cable set up, iq bow sight, whisker biscuit, and does pretty good which when your hunting for your family on a low budget it gets the job done 👍🏻 glad im not the only one that the bow shoots a little wonky out to 50 yards, thought it was just me being a new bow shooter but this video gives me a little bit of a better idea. Awesome videos 👍🏻

I still have a DXT I bought new. It's in like 95% good shape. I shoot it once in a while. Amazing how much bows have improved.

I picked up a 2017 Bear Threat RTH for 80 bucks at a local pawn just today. Great shape and has brand new strings. I couldn't believe it. They said it has been there for months. First put it out at 350 bucks but just don't sell bows so kept lowering the price. Funny thing is, there is an archery pro shop literally next door

I'm still shooting my 2011 Heli-m (also a solocam). Zero desire to change to a newer bow. If you don't have your own fully kitted bow shop, it's hard to beat a single cam bow.

Great video, I’m still shooting a Matthews Feather Max I purchased in 1997. I’m trying to save up for a new one now. It’s crazy how my first bow had 2 cams then Matthews swore by solo cams now everything is back to 2 cams.

I have a friend who actually started bow hunting with bow from a pawn shop. He built it for only like $150 and it's a great deal for that price.

I wish you had just left it as it came from the pawn shop. By the time you were done changing out components for modern equipment you ended up with an almost $800 bow, and that isn't even in the same ballpark of a budget as $200. I suspect that there are several modern RTS bows that would be a better option for $800. I do enjoy your content, just think you missed the mark on this video.

He actually nailed it. He shot better with the basic set up than when he added 600 dollars worth of stabs and a sight on. Even went back to the wisker basket. And as he mentioned at the end, that q2 was top notch back 20 years ago when it came out. Better than any 600 dollar package bow you'll go to cabelas and buy.

I just saw one of these at my local scheels all setup for 100. If you can find one in your draw length these older bows can be had for cheap and they’ll still kill a deer just fine. For anyone looking for a first bow just make sure you know your draw length and what weight limbs you can handle. Otherwise look for bows with a lot of adjustability in draw length and weight like most Mission bows.

Looks like the spacer block was installed on the QAD. That's why it's sticking into the arrow path. Also, you should have put two full twists into the left yoke for that nock left tear.

I have an old Golden Eagle that I still use that was my grandfathers. Its still about an inch too long but modules are next to impossible to find for them. Picked up myself an old Hoyt Rampage new in box for like $200 which I use for target and hunting. Cant beat a good bow.

Fun video. I've seen a bunch of these "budget build" videos; problem is, nobody ever actually goes to the woods with it and kills a deer...

I had a mathews fx i bought used for $500 and I liked it. Few yrs later I bought a Hoyt rampage that someone traded in to the archery shop when I was there and I immediately bought it for $450. Killed a lot of deer with both of those bows. The bow I have now is a mathews halon 6 I had built in 2016 and I have $1650 in it. I like it but honestly if I had to do it over again I would’ve kept the $450 Hoyt. Yes the halon is much better but the Hoyt obviously was much cheaper and it wasn’t as touchy as the halon is.

Can't wait to see all the beater garage bows that need new strings and have cracked limbs coming Into the shop this week...... keep in mind that most bows of that age aren't in that kind of condition off the rack. For an extra hundred or two hundred bucks you can get a brand new bow ready to hunt with a warranty.

Mission bows are the best budget bows out there imo.. Got an MXR last year and absolutely love it.. Worth it to spend a little more and get newer gear that will last you longer. I also added about $300 in accessories to it but still lol
