I was really hopeful that Robot Cantina from Haven, KS would repower his old school Honda Insight with a Predator V-Twin and it was a project that never happened which I'm really bummed about. He did the small engines, but never the V-Twin. A car that is so aerodynamically efficient with a v-twin, aluminum, and light-weight body, would make for a wonderful road tripper.

Awesome Chris! With you as my inspiration I am just a few short days away from driving my grandsons 1949 Willys CJ3A with the Predator 212. I have asked you a good number of questions and you have graciously answered them. After we get everything running and working well we will need to put new floors in the body and freshen up the rest of the body and prime and paint. This project has been a true complete frame off restomod. I am painting everything that I added to the Willys Jeep a different color so that folks can see what was added as you have. I was able to add all my pillow block framework and engine mount framework with using existing holes in the frame. One difference is that I am using a 30 series belt drive Torque Converter and then chain drive to the shaft and coupler. I would love to send you some pictures but I can't on this. I always thought the V belt operation was very sensical for this sort of thing just so you can retain a clutching mechanism that's 'manual' and cheap! Clutch replacement.... 15 dollars at the hardware store! Can't beat it. If you need more grip, then you can double, triple, and so on the belt. Again, since I think I said it before, I'll never forget this W6 compressor with 6 v belts belts run between the compressor and the motor that I came across in an abandoned building. IIRC they were 1 inch belts too. Really cool stuff

I'm curious about keeping the engine down low on the original rails as much as possible. Then using a series of brackets and intermediate shafts with chains or belts to direct the drive into the trans. There are also small u-joints and shafts available. Along with either a heavier industrial centrifugal clutch or a mechanical pedal operated clutch system. All reasonably affordable.

I'm Telling you Chris, if it was me I would have cut the end off of the crankshaft from the original engine, then I would have bored a blind hole in it the same size of the output shift of the engine. Then I would use that to mount the original flywheel and clutch to the engine. Then you could lower the engine about 4 or so inches and get it under the hood. Keep building Chris
@ChrisfromKeyfarm2 ай бұрын
I don't believe it would be enough power you'd probably never get it in third or fourth gear and it would be weak in first. Got to have gear reduction to make it work. Thanks for watching.
@No1414body2 ай бұрын
@ChrisfromKeyfarm the flywheel stores torque through momentum that will help it accelerate. And then once the flywheel gets up to speed it will save energy for the gear shifts.
@ChrisfromKeyfarm2 ай бұрын
@No1414body a heavy flywheel is useful to store centrifugal force energy for use for a small amount of time. In this application I believe you need a more constant even torque , not much use for a massive amount of torque for a few seconds. 👍
@weldeddaydreams2 ай бұрын
@no1414body it's been done before, I saw a video where a guy did it with a Miata. The factory flywheel is balanced for the factory engine and the vibrations eventually snapped the crank of the Predator. Also, the ball bearings used for the crankshaft on these little engines are great for handling the side load of a belt or chain, but suffer under the thrust load of depressing a conventional clutch. That, plus the gear reduction needed means you need some step down. For my money, I like your idea of mounting the engine lower and inline with the trans, but I'd have used a CVT or jackshaft to get the gear reduction needed.

First question as far as lowering it with this system you have to be up high enough so the clutch and the pulley clear second question using the original flywheel and clutch to do that you would have to mount all that on the end of the horizontal shaft and that would be a lot of rotating mass.

@ChrisfromKeyfarmАй бұрын
Absolutely but with the weight of the flywheel and the clutch on the smaller engine shaft you'd have to support it and it would be really difficult in my opinion to get it balanced.
@hearsejrАй бұрын
@ChrisfromKeyfarm I was hoping to have the flywheel for the clutch to make it simple. If i could figureout how to make a lighter flywheel and keep the clutch design wi5h out spending a fortuneat a online fabricationshop i would go that rout... my thoughts are I would just need to make a flang on the shaft for the flywheel bolts and add a thrust bearing to keep the fly wheel away from the face plate used on the bellhouseing to keep debris and trash out of the clutch and keep the the carrier bearing from rubbing the flywheel. i wish i could show the picture i drew working on thecidea. I used to ride dirt bikes and motorcycle a lot and had a little experience with chains and sprockets. Also was thinking of using an Onan 15 hp generator engine, with duel carbs and duel exhaust, because I had good luck with them and can find one fairly 3asy. I want to be able to move up to a 20 hp engine after i see if i can get 50 mph ... that would make it drivable on the road to the small town nearby me for g3tting gas and stuff. also thought I would remove the starter ring from the flywheel... to save weight. I need to build a frame to hold the engine and home made reduction gear set up, and front of the transmission up... so I was going to us3 the original engine mounts and some squared tubing.

Don't remember the name. There's a guy that out this engine in an old French Renault. It'll get up to 65 to 70. Cruises nicely at 55

Robot cantina that's a pretty cool project I just wish he would have used a more readily available car.

🌴🤔wondering what kinda gas mileage your gonna get ? So your doing what I wish I could do been wanting to do a big sport bike motor into a small car , a Toyota MR2 with a hyabusa motor , but even that MG midget with a big bike motor as it would have a bit more giddy up and go ! As for the 45 mph speed limit that would be somewhere in between 1st and second gear 😆👍🏼
@ChrisfromKeyfarm2 ай бұрын
That sounds like a great idea and I know of one guy that's actually done it check out a KZbin channel called JJ garage he's got a sport bike engine in an MG

In cases like this I envy you Americans. Here in Spain we couldn't even dream of making something like this street legal. Heck even just changing the seats would make it illegal.

It is odd. We can make extreme modifications to old cars (maybe different per state laws) but are very restricted in the new cars we can buy.

Turkish Suzuki samurai cut the input shaft put a Honda shaft drive motorcycle motor in front of it 25 forward gears gears and five reverse clutch from the motorcycle motor

I've got the same thing planned! In Australia we call them a Suzuki Sierra and I have a Bandit 1250 I'll be retiring soon. 30 forward gears + 6 reverse + low range and 11k rpm rev limiter. I'll make sure to get a video up when it happens.

The MGB had 1800cc (90 bhp new, 110 ft-lbs of torque). The early model had 1600cc a little 670 predator would be underpowered for it. A good new carb would put new life into the engine. The MG midget had engines ranging in size from1098 to 1493cc. The 1393cc engine made 65 horsepower 67 ft-lbs of torque (brake horsepower). Both the MGB and the MG midget would produce more torque than the little 670 predator. The predator engine only puts out 22 hp ( measured at the engine instead of at the wheels)37 ft-lbs of torque. So unless the engine of that car is completely worn out, you will not be better off. Buy a new engine, get another Mg engine (they are out there), go electric, use a motorcycle engine. If you want to modify your car, have at it, but please don't go with a engine that is smaller and weaker. Also, I would shy away from modifing your transmission ( shortening the input shaft). Once you start cutting, you can't fo back.I would recommend selling that transmission (if it is in good shape) and buying another modern transmission. Those MG transmissions had a really low 1st gear. Also the MG's had a beefy rear axle. You could change the differential gear to get a higher speed.

While I do appreciate you watching and the comment I'm afraid you have missed the point of all of these repowers, people love this channel because I move cars with engines that are supposed to be in tillers,pressure washers and generators it's mind-blowing. I'm not using the 670 because it's any better,( it's definitely not)I'm using the 670 because it's on the shelf at harbor freight all over the country. I have an 18 horsepower monster truck for goodness sakes.

When are you going to experiment with small diesel engines? No cleaning carbs No spark plugs And if you go mechanical injection you can run them on darn near anything!! I have a 186FA diesel 10 hp 20ftlb torque 3600 RPM red line. I have a ton of KZbin videos on it Look up Amazon Diesel Engine Will it run? Ive shown how it can run on filtered waste oil Vegetable oil 2 stroke oil Power steering fluid ATF And many others.

They call those engines "Predator" , wonder if it's 'cause the Red Chinese predate our western money and jobs. It reminds me of a sale that Mitsubishi once had on their cars in the US. They called it the "0-0-0" sale. Now, a US WW2 Navy vet MIGHT just take exception to that.
