Our 900cc Ducati go kart called the Ducarti goes up against our 670cc 2 stroke snowmobile powered go kart on a 5000' runway! The Ducati kart "only" has 80 horsepower vs the 670 2 stroke's 125 horsepower, but the Ducarti weighs 100lbs less than the snowmobile kart! We start the head to head shootout with a best 2 out of 3 drag race from a dig. Then we try a best 2 out of 3 rolling start. The winner of that goes up against an Audi R8 supercar!

Jetting and clutching is SO crucial when it comes to snowmobile engines... The clutching is a tough one, because it depends so much on the conditions and the desired behaviour. It's also a very fine balancing act between the primary and secondary clutches. It's more of an art than a science, at least in the real world. Jetting is probably really hard as well, the thing IS designed to run at cold temperatures. The pipe is tuned to a specific rpm, which is HUGE for making power in a two-stroke, and the clutch setup needs to be spot on within like 200 rpm plus or minus that rpm. 200 rpm plus or minus CAN also mean like 10 hp, because the engine makes it peak power in a VERY narrow rpm range, because it's designed with the CVT in mind. The CVT, ideally, very quickly lets the engine reach its peak power rpm at WOT from a dig and then the clutches shift while very precisely holding exactly that rpm until they're fully shifted.

Wow that ducarti is quick. When i was 7 years old my father brought home a 100hp Briggs and Stratton water pump motor that would not run. So my 2 brothers and I worked on that motor all winter and finally in the spring after school let out we finally got it fixed to where it would run only on racing fuel. My father built us a racing go cart and put the engine on it. While all the other go karts used belt drive we used cogs to where there was no chance in a chain or belt would break. We test drove it down the main highway and a state trooper clocked us going down a straight of way going 145mph needless to say he gave my oldest brother a ticket for use of a go kart on a road and a reckless driving and speeding ticket. We used the kart as a drag kart for many years then we sold it to another person who got hurt very bad on it by not wearing safety gear. I love you're videos bc it takes me back to my child hood when we built karts to,race. Keep up the great work

I can't wait for them to get a "new project" bike small CC high HP's to see what they could crank out next hey that 670 once tuned and more closer to finished is going to be a monster no doubt but from a pile of parts the ducarti has really proved it self a beast maybe next track day you can do some hits with it as well so the 670 will have a running buddy.

Hell yeah!! i know that you dont really need to go faster than like 105 but im thinkin the gearing might be too low. if your grabbing 5th gear and still spinning tires it might actually make it more controlable getting to those speeds if you make the rear sprocket smaller
@TylerDuysen
@TylerDuysen 2 жыл бұрын
smaller sprocket =more wheel spin(smaller the gear the faster it goes ) tthey need to leave the gearing alone they just have crappy tires
@chucksherron
@chucksherron 2 жыл бұрын
@@TylerDuysen higher gearing changes the power delivery. Slightly lower torque and HP at the dig means less wheel spin/slip with the bonus of a higher top speed at redline for each gear.
@TylerDuysen
@TylerDuysen 2 жыл бұрын
@@chucksherron yes but in this case the power delivery of the ducarti wouldnt do that itd just slip even more slicks and pavement do not get along so the more you change the gearing to raise top speed in this case wont change the power delivery for each gear (on the bioke it would already have alot smaller sprocket and the engines powerband/power delivery is set up for that so putting a smaller sprocket on will just match the stock gearing on the bike
@jamesallenmainieri
@jamesallenmainieri 2 жыл бұрын
@@TylerDuysen it doesn't work that way, though I see where you get that idea. Smaller final drive sprocket will drop rpm at the wheel at the same input. Simple as that. Less rpm at the wheel equals more control
@chevy6794
@chevy6794 2 жыл бұрын
Also the cart has smaller rear wheels lowering gearing even further. He said he was leaving in 2nd or 3rd already. With a longer gear it could spend more time in a gear taking advantage of the torque and waist less time with gear changes. And yes a taller gear is less likely to spin especially with slicks. I think all they could do is test and tune to know for sure though.

When you announced this matchup, I knew it wasn't as easy as straight up power to weight ratio. The DuKarti has 2 big cylinders, a lot more torque, and multiple gears. The 2 stroke has that bog on the launch, and needs to rev to the moon to realize it's hp advantage. Also, while the CVT is more linear, I wonder it the gearing on it is holding it back. Either way, those karts are no slouch!

That 2 stroke should have way more torque than the Dukarti. 80+ftlb vs 56 ftlb for the Ducati. They both make their peak power at 7-8,000rpm, although obviously the 2 stroke sounds revvier because it's making twice as many bangs. If the 2 stroke was tuned correctly it would win every time.

I know I said in a previous episode the reed valves are really important for raising. You will flood out because just like regular valves the pistons can move faster than the valves. They are plastic and if they get to warm they really start behaving bad. Just for fun put two stroke jugs on motorcycle gears. It will change your life.

that 2 stroke twin would be soooo much better with dual tuned pipes and a carb thats tuned right
@hybiepoo
@hybiepoo 2 жыл бұрын
The intake on a 2stroke can be as important as the exhaust. If there's some way to rig up the original intake for testing, I'd try and do it. If it works you can look at the shape/length and maybe try to replicate it. Some 2strokes don't even like closed ends on air filters like the ones you're using because you can get pulses coming back through the carbs, bouncing off the back of the air filters and causing tuning issues. You might also want to make sure those powervalves are not stuck.

Its factory standard with a cold weather tune. Basically it just needs tuning for the temp so it runs well. Once tuned, it should easily outdo the ducati without modification.

Ditch the 670 exhaust and put an aftermarket nice one on. (Quiet series maybe) Then get the jetting right. Both were well matched and awesome to see almost flying :)

I would love to see what the 670 would do with a manual 5 or 6 speed. I bet it would be alot quicker as it's tuned now. With it dialed in I think it would take the Ducarti. You could get it on the pipe really quick & with those high rpms you would be in 5th or 6th real quick. It just seems like it's loosing alot of acceleration with the torque converter.
@dipstiksubaru3246

It's all to do with their lack of knowledge of snowmobiles that's hurting the 670. Not the transmission.

Torque coverter dialed to 100% combinated with getting the carbs tuned right will be sick. Way faster than a gearbox.
@linushforsberg8385
@linushforsberg8385 2 жыл бұрын
Torque converter is great for 2 stroke acceleration, when tuned right. It allows launching and maintaining absolute peak power rpm from basically 0 to full speed. These 2 strokes are made with that in mind, so even just 100rpm wrong in the tuning can lose you significant power. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYrQqWeBqrNqnck example, you can see from pretty much a standing start he has it at over 8krpm and maintaining that, with gearing youd have to slip the clutch and need some skill to not bog down in that heavy snow.

This is a cool video! My main critique of you guys is you never seem to get your stuff sorted out before doing these bigger tests. It kills me... You have a whole airstrip at your disposal but you didn't get everything dialed before going. Still a cool video and fun comparison but this is a growth edge for you guys.

This channel has always been about building and testing go carts and mini bikes and teaching us , I think I can safely say that the ducarty was dielled in. !!!!! And ready. Did anyone at all even remotely think that the snow mobeal was tuned for winter!!??? Well I sure didn't even think about that. Issac is the only one. Because he was there and realized that was why it was bogging down of the line.

If you guys haven't messed with the clutches yet on the 670, consider it. Ask any professional running sled engines in the summer. Leaner jetting, and less weight in primary clutches is key. Alot of power is lost, but the engine will run happy at least. Also should add the peak rpm is critical, and many people use exhaust gas temp sensors to watch the jetting/load/etc.
