I'm just 12 and I've been doing magic for about 7 months. I've been struggling to get gimmicks, since I'm so young, and I can only get gimmicks so often. I try to keep all my tricks impromptu and only involving a regular deck of playing cards. Do I want a million gimmicks that are awesome real badly? Of course. But can I get great reactions and still pursue magic without gimmicks? Of course. In conclusion, I absolutely love gimmicks and use a very few amount of them, but I still survive without them. And what you do in magic should really be mostly sleight of hand in my opinion, to have "skill". P.S. I love your videos Chris and have been a part of the channel since 40k. :) Your cards are frickin dope.

I think a lot of people start like this because they don't start with magic as trickery, but something purer than that. Interesting how many people share this mentality.

Personal I love gimmicks, sometimes you can make miracles with them. But I do love sleights hand as well. Just like Joshua Jay once said, if the method for making the the effect most amazing is the gimmick, I well definitely use a gimmick. If just use pure sleights of hand is best way to make the effect astonishing, I will use sleights. My point is whether use a gimmick or not depend on which one make the effect better and cleaner.

Man I can't get enough of these videos. So inspirations! For me, I started heavy with gimmicks. I loved the self working stuff built into a gimmick even more. Got some stuff from Ellisonist, Card Shark, Murphy's...all of em. I started to realize a lot of people I performed for always wanted to see or inspect. In close up and walk-around...I found there's a problem with saying "no" or not being allowed to show the spectator. It's not the worst but I'd does take away from the "magic." I recently attended a lecture by Daryl and learned his insight to ending clean. I then though by his lecture, use a gimmick or method to reinforce the disbelief they already have to amplify the effect. Instead of starting the routine with the method...start with the effect. Prime example: in Professor's Nightmare...start by showing the ropes equal length, then finishing the famous routine with the ropes different lengths...you hide the method in the effect. If gimmicks can be used in the same way...presto. If we use them as a tool and not as the effect I think they're great. Ok...rant over. But the short answer is I use gimmicks often as long as I can ditch them or hide them well.

he just said that gimmicks are created by the items themselves...wich I didnt know / realise.. and it opens tons of clues on how some tricks could work. You won't do gimmicks with a pack of cards you just got from the dollarstore... the pack of cards needs to be adjusted physically for the card trick to work. And I don't know what you're looking to get out of a magics blog about gimmicks Did you think he would teach us is how to cure cancer or some deep shit like that ?

gimmicks can be such a powerful tool but sometimes I feel like I am cheating. I do a trick I called time traveller but at the end of day half of the card are double backed but people say it blows them away. where I also do the Jay sankey trick ripping the 2 cards up and restoring them giving me a higher sense of achievement and there is no gimmick involved. I think there is a fine line.

Hedge Hog I was about to say the same thing. I think performing a trick without a gimmick gives one more satisfaction because you didn't "cheat", and did everything on your own. For me performing to someone is not only about the reaction of the person, but also if I feel I did the performance and the trick right or not.

bubby bumble I guess it's not about using a gimmick but about whether u worked to get a good reaction . in the sense , I feel more satisfied if u had to practice a lot in mastering the gimmick or a routine which uses a gimmick and then got a good reaction.

You feel like cheating? Then don't do card tricks at all, or magic for that matter because we are "cheating" everytime we do a sleight of hand. Eitherway, the spectators DO NOT and WILL NEVER know how the trick is done whether you are using a gimmick of not. Our ultimate goal is to entertain, suspend their beliefs, make them wonder. It doesn't matter if you use gimmicks or not.

I was the same way. Went out with about 10 decks of cards (9 gimmicked) and an extra deck for signed card effects, plus some coin stuff, IT (with scotch tape and wax), and sponge balls. That was about 2 years ago when I got into magic. Now, if I'm out with friends, or doing close-up, I carry 2 decks (one regular, and my own gimmicked deck), sponge balls, index cards, and a sharpie/pen. I always mix up my gimmicked decks (meaning I don't take an invisible deck and brainwave deck in the same night). I use gimmicks a lot. I actually had an idea for a card trick of which I had to create my own gimmicked deck; that trick now I've expanded to a killer prediction routine that utilizes many gimmicks. It's always cool to see someone else's performance of an effect and try and create the method for yourself.

I know this video is a few years old now, but I just want to say that I prefer not to use gimmicks. I LOVE it when everything is clean and open and everything can be inspected. I love tricks like Sinful (by the way, Wayne Houchin is an amazing magician) because it's such a simple yet mind blowing illusion and it's 100% impromptu. Watching spectators as they react to something that happens completely on the fly is what true magic is to me.

Yo Chris, I've been practicing card magic for a little over a year. I'm an almost 40 year old dude that's a professional salesperson. I always have loved Magic a year ago a little over a year ago I decided to quit smoking, I needed to have something for my hands to do and found shuffling a deck of cards was just as good as anything else. so I started teaching myself small moves and slights, checked out some books at the library they were Terrible by the way. I ended up buying several gimmick decks, I got a stripper deck, I got a mental photography deck, I gotta Triumph deck, and an invisible deck. By the end of the the first three months I decided to start bringing multiple decks to Friendly get-togethers the started performing magic to friends. I really enjoyed it. I found myself in a position where I was not confident we're people were asking challenging questions where people always wanted to know the answer but I didn't want to violate the code. that experience of being under pressure only made be better in the boardroom. What I did not enjoy was having to Lug around practically a briefcase to a party so I could have a little extra fun and entertainment with my friends. I have smaller hands than I'd like to have but there's not a whole lot I can do about that. it makes a lot of card changes difficult color changes etcetera but I continue to have fun with it. I have three kids and they love it when their friends come over they always ask me to do some magic for their friends. about six months ago I was at some shitty chain restaurant and this seven or eight year old boy was having a fit at the table next to us so I pulled out of deck of cards and asked him if I could show him something. I ended up doing about four tricks for him in his parents the boy relaxed and was basically a good kid the rest of his dinner his father ended up picking up my family's tab so I consider that my first paid magician gig and currently the only one under my belt. I love gimmicks but really don't spend a whole lot of time or money investing in them other than what I have from those first three decks. Now when I go buy a new cards if it's not a standard deck of bikes I find myself going into the local magic shop in Seattle and Pike Place Market asking to try a Deck that I like, by 1 from them and then typically buy more online at a lower price if I like that . Case in point the keeper deck the keeper deck Buy ellusionist. I try to keep Magic and my profession separate, however if I ever see a business card laying on a table in front of me and the person that put that card down is obviously expecting mine without saying anything or explaining that I'm doing a trick I will often use the Lloyds light switch. I'll comment on their card the cardstock the embossment the rounded corners whatever it is that makes their business card unique, i never explain i am doing a trick. I turn the card over and in the process lay my business card down it's the business card light switch. Every time I've done it I've gotten a reaction that has been positive and have been able to build instant rapport with potential prospects and clients. yYour channel is awesome and what I think is great about it is that you're not just providing tutorials but rather providing insight into what magic really is, how it can be performed better, and how we can become better at it regardless if you were a professional magician or if you're some guy like me that just really enjoys it and enjoys entertaining friends an the occasional bratty kid at a restaurant. I will however fault you for my abnormally large Q of books that I'm ready to buy from Amazon or penguin magic or wherever else I was able to find that book. So continue providing great references for us to look at whether they be books or videos that may help any of us improve our skill and our craft. Keep Vlogging

Curtis Lee I like to mix the two. I use a few heavy gaff cards, and some outright gimmicks. They can be a great way to catch a break in a show without breaking the flow as well. Whenever I'm tired, or I want to chill for a set up, I'll just do one of my gimmicks tricks to kick up the energy and push the show forward, while still getting a quick breather. I especially love Magix (purchasable at ellusionist) and the wonderful Double Cross effect is great for a quick walkaround trick.

I feel it's good for those "WUT" tricks but a LOT of people think you're doing gimmicks, so I do try to learn tricks without using gimmicked cards. I use doubles but as an amateur I would prefer not falling into the lazy magician style where a trick is basically always done and you aren't under any real pressure to make the trick perfect. Gimmicks are good for professionals only, imo, the ones that have gone through the wringer, that have experienced the fear of fucking up, have fucked up and become amazing magician's that can work on the fly. If you're an amateur just starting out, I feel you'll only end up relying on gimmicks and doing other tricks will just become too difficult. Professionals should only utilize gimmicks because they can do without, amateurs should never touch the things because they may end up leaning on it, and becoming the magician you are talking about.

Hey, I am trying to perform magic since about a year now, didn't make too much progress, it's more like a small hobby that I come back to every now and then, BUT I still love it and want to get better in it. I started out with simple card tricks, that I learned from an app. Then I practiced more complicated ones, worked on my card skills. started out with double lift, tripple lift, false-cut, right now I'm having a hard time palming of cards quickly. Just now I figured out by myself how to flick one card from my right hand to the deck sitting in my left hand. I screamed like a fat happy little baby. Last year my girlfriend gifted me my first gimmicked card deck. The 1800 Deck v2. Looks awesome! It has this old western casino look. It is marked on the back, very subtle in my eyes and comes with a second Queen of Hearts with a red back instead of blue. So that was myf rist gimmick. A few days ago she bought me a new gimmick "Gone Deck" by Shin Lim. Conclusion: I am horrible with assembling xDD I think certain gimmicks are very helpful, like letting your deck vanish completely or turn it into one single card. There so many possibilitits, but you are right, comming up with your own stuff, using inspiration from gimmicks is the best way to use them. BUT I will still use my Gone Deck 8). Oh and one Gimmick I surley want to own: Omni Deck. So many things you could do with it. not just change the deck in a glass block, what about making your card disappear under water? Aaaaah I love magic.. It's fun practicing and learning new stuff :)

Nice video with solid advice, but there are a few things that might be troublesome. Some gimmicks may last you a lifetime only if handled properly, but not so much if you start trying to discover the secrets by yourself and end up breaking things. Usually the only disclaimer you get is obviously within the explanation. So above all, be careful when doing such. I have heard far too often that people broke their gimmicks upon playing around with it before diving into the explanations, and although sometimes the case, it would often not be because of these gimmicks being poorly constructed. I like the suggestion of not watching the explanation otherwise, but that also means you shouldn't watch the trailer, so basically you would need to buy gimmicks solely based on their descriptions, which I suppose doesn't really work out. I think watching either or is fine, as long as you make it your own and adjust it accordingly in the end. It goes for all magic, regardless of whether it includes gimmicks or not. Also, I think the "thank you for the inspiration by the way, keep your gimmick" is good but only if you actually buy the product to find out how it works, to support the person for giving you the inspiration, and to perhaps find out more about its history and origins. I find there are too many gimmicks that work solely on camera without having such a disclaimer and often with misleading performances. I think that the majority of performing or "older" magicians think these are no good for that very reason. They might very well like the effect and see how it could add to their repertoire, but then upon receiving it or hearing more about it find out it's of absolutely no use in the real world. That doesn't make the gimmicks bad by any means, but the marketing of it might very well be if it comes with no such disclaimer.

Also, and please don't get me wrong, but I really wish you had done the tiniest bit more research into the definition of Abracadabra. It seems that you got it from a widespread image containing a somewhat faulty translation claiming that it's Hebrew.

I started watching this video with a preconceived notion that you would demonstrate some gimmicks. You didn't. But I was definitely NOT disappointed. Your philosophy of how to use gimmicks and creatively integrate them into routines is so much more valuable than showing us individual gimmicks. Thanks.

Cory Tobin I'm telling you, as long as you do a pocket deck switch, as in take the deck after the performance and put it away, saying "Alright guys, I'm sorry, but I've got to go... ah, one more trick" just put the gimicked deck in your pocket, and then out of the same pocket or pull out a normal deck. The only problem now is having something that's powerful enough to followup Svengali.

The reason I got into magic was because I loved the Harry Potter films as a kid and wanted to also do magic. For this reason I much prefer impromptu magic, because somebody who could really do something magical wouldn't need any 'special items'. That said, there are some gimmicks I love, such as Advocate.

Think you hit the nail on the head. Time and place for gimmicks. Impromptu stuff always hits the ball out of the park along with mentalism. I thought I was the only crazy person not to watch the tutorial, I like to see what works for me. If I draw blanks on how I can fit it into my personality, then I'll watch the tutorial.

So, a magician by no means, though I did once find/use a gimmick. It was a pack of trick cards from a dollar store. The deck was regular size, though every other card was a 9 of hearts, and each 9 of hearts was shorter than the other cards. So skim through one way to reveal the deck, and a bunch of normal cards appear. Skim the other way, face down, and the person will always draw a 9 of hearts. It's a neat little dumb trick, but was actually my first introduction into the world of "trick tricks", so to speak.

My very first magic gimmick was D'lites, about ten years ago, and for a solid year, it was the only gimmick I had used. Its amazing what you can come up with when you spend a long amount of time with a gimmick. Did you know you can use D'lites with red sponge balls? it's a killer way to introduce them. I use it in the context of plucking an idea out of the air and then with enough hard work it becomes a reality.

I use one gimmick per day. The things I carry everywhere is one deck of cards( ungimicked ) and a coin purse with regular half dollars. I pack up one trick deck usually or something like extreme burn2.0. My usual gimmick that I use is an expanded shell for coin work. I honestly hate gimmicks but the audience loves them so I keep one on me always.

In my opinion, gimmicks are best used in conjunction with good sleight of hand. Good foundations in sleight of hand are essential to both gimmicked and ungimmicked material.

I've been doing magic for I think 6 or 6 months now, I have figured out a method to do Decibel with, but it's hard to create the gimmick, but I'll build as fast as I can and start performing. The only gimmicks that I really like and use are 1) the loops, if I'm outside in the streets and I want to do something crazy really fast. 2) Calen Morelli's Odyssey, I use this one from time to time, I've created some effects that look like the gimmicked ones, but use the ordinary ring so I could finish the routine after passing the ring to the spectators.... 3) a red-blue bike colored double backer which I put together (it's my first double backer! :D), I do my goto trick with this, use it before the ambitious routine.

Hey Chris, just want to say that you are totally right about being creative. Thinking of or getting inspired by an effect. I bought red pill when it came out, however before it arrived I already came up with a cool gimmick that I was very proud of and have been using it ever since achieving your effect and many others. I rarely use gimmicks when I perform, I love coming up with effects with sleights that I've created and testing them out on people. However something always carry with is the advocate and skim'n ems. Thanks mate, I appreciate all of your content.

I've been using a mixture of gimmicks and impromptu for a while. When I was getting into magic (the second time) it started with going to a magic shop and buying a four pack special of the invisible deck, rising card, Svengali and wizard(stripper) deck. I still have quite a few gimmicks such as brainwave, an invisible deck somewhere, and a couple of older things. I still have my prophet gimmick, and Greed. Though normally I do mostly impromptu tricks, because people at school know me as magician, and randomly ask me to do a trick when I'm not ready for it.

I started out doing just pure sleight of hand, impromptu based card magic and more often than not knuckle busting sleight of hand. I eventually started looking at gimmicks, but in the past 10 years there is literally only 6 gimmicks I use and they still require sleight of hand, and are meant to be hidden. The gimmicks I do use, are stuff that allows you to be creative with them. I have never liked gimmicks, where they only can do one thing and there is no room for ANY creativity.

btw i know this is a older videos. But neon signs sometimes look alot better on a black background just because it hides the neon caps. When i do signs like this at work we will typically create a box for it and hide the power supply and everything inside of it so you only have one cable coming out. You can also do a cloud around the letters if you dont want it boxy looking.

One of the simplest effect with gimmick that I used, besides a strip deck, was a card in the wallet that is a double backer with different colors, that you put o the top of the deck ad then with a double lift, you show the spectator card... then the back is change to match the deck.

I started doing magic at age 9 and am 31 now. For the longest time I would try to not use gimmicks. I didn't want to have to rely on something mechanical to create the magic. Now that I'm older... though I don't use many, I have found GREAT uses for so many gimmicks/utilities. I nearly always have Kuepper's Superman, Garrett Thomas' Stand Up Monte, a Vernet TT, An Advocate, and an OSYN with me. In my wallet I always have a couple of Rick Lax's (I can't remember the name of the routine) but it's a thought of card. My wallet itself is also an Undercover wallet... and more often than not I'm either using Jeff Kaylor's UCCU or the TKO. Recently I've also added Dan White's Digital Dissolve into the mix. At first, when I bought the routine, I truly wasn't a huge fan of it. But I'm such a fan of Scotch & Soda routines, but I've always hated the reset. I've now reconfigured how I perform the routine. I made it a 2 phase routine, and you're always ready to perform it again. My point here is this... it's not the methods that make the magic, it's how you perform and entertain. Sure, you want to have the methods down, but even with simple to use gimmicks, give them the practice even your hardest sleights deserve. Because you want to handle everything as if nothing is unusual, then there will be no suspicion that there is anything unusual being used. So don't be afraid of gimmicks. If they don't work for you, don't use them, or put them away for a later time. Great video!

I said this last time, but my only gimmick is the Svengali deck, and the only "tutorial" I saw at first was the guy who was selling it. When I got it and used it, I was able to come up with 2 new methods of using it, and I gotta say, even though it's something used for a VERY long time, being able to create a method is the absolutely best feeling, especially when you get to perform it :D

Chris, I've been doing magic for a little over ten years and when I started I definitely had all my jacket pockets overflowing with decks and gimmicks galore! Nowadays I just walk around with a deck and some coins. Unless I get a new gimmick or trick that I'm trying out for people and then I'll carry that around for a while. One thing that I do to spark creativity is to do an effect which uses a gimmick and then find ways to achieve the same effect with pure sleight of hand or using a different method all together. I would LOVE to see more about your creative process. I always dig your magic and the way you present it in your videos. Always a pleasure sir!

I use gimmicks for videos, but not so much in a real life performance. I enjoy using them and think they have their place. So I say go for it, if that's your things! If it is assisting in creating a more magical moment for the spectator, then that is the best time to use it.

The phrase "abracadabra" was coined for its use as a cure for hay fever in the year 200 AD. It's lineage traces back as such: The Roman Empire had a doctor named Q. Serenus Sammonicus, and abracadabra was his cure for hay fever. Not a phrase used in the cure, but the cure itself, as in, 'proper noun.' S. Sammonicus would make the ailing an amulet with the word carved across the top, then under that it'd have the word again but minus the last letter: "Abracadabr", then under that, the word minus the last two letters: "Abracadab". All the way down until just the first A was written, so all eleven lines formed an inverted triangle. This amulet was given as a believed cure for hay fever during that time. He apparently coined this word in relation to the Greek magical word 'abraxas', which got its significance from the fact that in Greek numerology, this word's letter values added up to 365, the same number of days in a year. The word traces back to Hebrew or Aramaic origin, being derived either from the Hebrew words 'ab' (father), 'ben' (son), and 'ruach hakodesh' (holy spirit), or from the Aramaic 'avra kadavra', which means 'it will be created in my words'. That neon sign is doooope.

I only practice and perform impromptu stuff. That's the way I like it and for me personally, that is what I feel in my heart is the cleanest way for me. I want to be able to walk into a room, have a deck of cards thrown at me while someone says: "Come on then, blow my mind". And then literally blow his or her mind. I don't mind that people use gimmicks. It just doesn't suit my thought of what magic is.

Rubiks cube and flash paper back right pocket, sponge bunnies, rubber bands, 1 deck of bicycle playing cards with 2 gimmick cards in clear sleeve/plastic cover. Backpack with linking rings, cups and balls routine laptop, pretty packed. It was quitr uncomfortable back then. Over time I used about 15% - 20%. Now I may use different verity tricks that I carry but I keep it to a minimum of 10. I learned how to carry light and efficiently
