As a fervent McTiernan Die Hard devotee, I must say I still really thoroughly enjoy this movie. It's a bit weird aesthetically for a Die Hard entry, because it's shot so overtly composed and color corrected cool like a sci-fi thriller. But the plot, characterizations, action and stunt choreography are all done very well. Ironically, director Len Wiseman's next film in the remake of Total Recall actually does have more of that John McTiernan Die Hard style of shooting with anamorphic lensed steadycam whip pans, rack focus bounce, shallow depth-of-field bokeh, and of course the horizontal lens flares. Admittedly, Wiseman's more doing the crackerjack gee-wiz-bang-pow JJ Abrams overwrought variation on McTiernan though.
@camj35574 жыл бұрын
I see you're a McTiernan mega-fan like me! He has (or had) one of the best eyes for the camera in Hollywood. Natural talent! His problem was he tried to get a little over-creative in his later films and that's why they suffered.
@Geronimo_Jehoshaphat4 жыл бұрын
@@camj3557 Well "Rollerball was cast ineptly, particularly with Chris Kline, and had that whole weird green nightvision border crossing sequence that really felt non-diegetic to the narrative. "Basic" was just way too convoluted and had a very usatisfying conclusion to its Rashomon mystery which just felt dishonest. McTiernan has to take the blame, because he is the one that wrote it. Love much of the stylish psychological steadycam in that picture though. McTiernan tells the subtextual nuances of character and story through camera movement maybe better than anyone. Other than that McTiernan could do no wrong in my eyes. I loved "Thomas Crown Affair". Spry and sexy, yet mature and refined too. Great remake. Love "Thirteenth Warrior" too. Although it's always felt slightly truncated, specifically in regards to an obviously excised love story subplot which is only slightly referenced upon in mostly vague glances within the final film. Seems more of Ibn's backstory about he being banished from Persia for his forbidden tryst may have been removed as well. It possibly suffered from meddling as novelist/producer Michael Crichton took over in post-production with reshoots and therefore the theatrical version we know and love is actually Crichton's producer's edit which may or may not have been superior, but one great thing Crichton definitely is responsible for is replacing McTiernan composer Graeme Revell's interestiong music score with Crichton directorial mainstay Jerry Goldsmith - and all his indelible majeestic magnificence. It'd be fascinating to ever get to see McTiernan's original Eaters Of The Dead director's cut of 13th Warrior, but that iconic Goldsmith score missing would be hard to accept! Graeme Revell's rejected score is out there for the listen however, and is actually very competent. Goldsmith is just king, that's all.

I haven't seen the 5th one...probably never will. Die Hard ends with 4!

The action in this movie ends up looking more like True Lies than Die Hard. Definitely sticks out compared to the trilogy. And yes, Maggie Q was the better villain over Timothy Olyphant, although people today would likely complain about a woman her size being able to kick men's asses. Also, I love Kevin Smith's story about noticing how depressed Len Wiseman was due to working everyday w/ Bruce Willis. Basically, Willis (who tended to show up late daily) kept on interrupting the shooting b/c he constantly questioned the script. Smith stepped up to rewrite a small section of it and was submitted to the studio for approval. During which Bruce held a barbecue party for the rest of the day. When the studio finally called at night to disapprove of the changes, he simply asked them who their 2nd choice was to play John McClane. Afterwards, the crew was sent home so that he could go to the Rocky 6 premiere. Hence, nothing was accomplished on a shooting day that cost $375,000.

@Disney is the Devil Overdone? Its heyday was the Girls with Guns subgenre of the late 20th century often starring the legendary ladies brought up by jp3813. Got this from an essay on a website called Film Comment: "Girls with Guns movies didn’t just pass the Bechdel Test, they destroyed it. The men’s roles were limited to treacherous pimps, lazy boyfriends, unsupportive husbands, or silky boy-toys, and the focus was on sisterhood served with a side of hot lead...the heroines are chaste, love scenes happen offscreen, romance consists of little more than flirtatious glances, and the heroines are usually bundled up in ankle-length skirts, high-waisted mom jeans, long jackets, and loose T-shirts...When they weren’t talking about sisterhood, Girls with Guns movies chronicled the war between the sexes. Women were passed over for promotion, not given serious cases, sold into prostitution, threatened with rape, obliged to go undercover as hookers, and called 'bitch' with metronomic regularity. In hand-to-hand combat, their opponents, who were more accustomed to battling men, sometimes kicked them in the crotch only to realize that wouldn’t get them anywhere, and then punched them in the breasts instead. Matched up against larger male combatants the women made use of their every feminine advantages, constantly shooting, stabbing, kicking, and punching men in the balls...between 1985 and 1993, women with machine guns ruled the Hong Kong box office...it was a period when you didn’t have to explain why the grinning, chipmunk-cheeked girl in a raincoat with a Hello Kitty backpack kicked ass. She was a woman. That was enough."

@raygudel54924 жыл бұрын
That sequence was ridiculous, even if he could manage to hold himself on the wing that long, and that's a big goddamn if, he would never have survived the landing on that broken piece of freeway, or the fucking fighter jet blowing up right above him. It was completely absurd. That's why this movie, while fun and very well made, doesn't really fit with the die hard series, McClane isn't a superhero, he's a regular dude who also happens to be a pretty badass cop, making him capable of stepping up and getting his ass kicked all over the place while he pushes on, he's not Rambo.
@hbdragon884 жыл бұрын
Besides the fight being lame, I thought him landing RIGHT WHERE the final standoff happened was ridiculously contrived. Like the bad guys were trying to speed away and they picked where McClane ended up crashing neae?
@boondocktax51794 жыл бұрын
You guys just forget about the ejection seat explosion in two? Or being blown out A manhole 50 feet in the air after surfing on a pump truck? Or the 100+ foot cable drop and swing in 3? The only one that he wasn't a super hero was the original
@hbdragon884 жыл бұрын
@Benjamin Sharpe *Ejection seat, but I know what you mean. Throw in fighting on the plane's wing in DH2 and being thrown off without any serious injuries (or at least more than he already had), as well.
@raygudel54924 жыл бұрын
@@boondocktax5179 you make a good point, good enough that I sat back a minute and reevaluated, but I still can't see the action in the first 3 being as over the top as live free was. Those movies were always action movies, of course no one can really jump from the roof of a building attached to a firehouse, escape an explosion and reenter the the building a few floors down, that's crazy, but its staged in a way that is believable for the character based on what we had already witnessed him do in earlier scenes, the second 1 is usually the most disliked anyway, but it still (mostly) maintains the idea of McClane and tries to keep it believable while also dialling up the action as any blockbuster sequel is basically required to do. The 3rd was again an action movie so he did action movie stuff, but it also stayed mostly grounded in reality as well. Cars didn't become bullets and McClane couldn't take on fighter jets single handedly, nor could he conveniently fly helicopters, unless he was moved to the matrix back in 99 and we didn't know. That's why people say he became a superhero in this one, this movie tried so hard to dial up the action that they forgot to make it even remotely believable for a fictional movie character. They just went too far, if they had more restraint, it could have been great, because its an awefully fun movie, it just doesn't fit into its franchise.

Stuckman is 100% spot on with this one. This movie has completely withstood the test of time. It naturally incorporated special effects with practical effects. He pointed out the best character scene of the movie where McClane comments on the hubris of being “that guy.” Wiseman got robbed without getting more opportunities after this one. They totally nailed this entry and it stands just as tall as the rest of the first three. P.S. last time praising Stuckman. The climax is a little CG heavy, but sliding down the wasted overpass while taking down the harrier jet and then shooting through his shoulder while dropping the “Yippie Ki Yay” is straight up cinematic gold. That’s all there is to it. Movie is 🔥
