@mateoairaudo55354 жыл бұрын
It did lose the spirit of the first two movies, and that´s why it´s the best Die Hard sequel. McTiernan was aware that no sequel would be able to recapture the magic of the original Die Hard. That´s why the third movie feels really fresh, and not just a lame rehash of the first like DH 2 was. But I think that the problem with DH 3 is the third act. It literally falls apart, as it feels totally anticlimatic. Die Hard ending was perfect, not to mention its billion qualities too.
@mateoairaudo55354 жыл бұрын
@@kitkatcitee9919 Your taking my point too far. I just said that a sequel should make changes in order to stay fresh and add something to a series. If you are fine with DH 2, great. I'm not.
@ryansoprovich22584 жыл бұрын
I understand the poor reception. There are flimsy moments that reduce the tension, like when Bruce Willis bursts out of an underground pipe on a surge of water JUST as Samuel L Jackson drives by. Or when Jeremy Irons tosses Willis an Aspirin bottle -- or whatever it was -- that has an unlikely label on it just so the writer has a way of revealing the villain's destination later in the movie. Actually, even the way the two heroes get paired up in the first place seemed kind of forced, in my opinion: Jackson becomes Willis's partner for the entire movie based on Jeremy Irons's whim and a line or two of his dialogue, when Irons's character is otherwise presented as a very meticulous planner. This movie doesn't seem like a natural progression of events the way that the first movie did. It's more like the writer dragging his characters -- and the audience -- to where he wants them to be at any given moment.
@cockerpoodles12384 жыл бұрын
@@mateoairaudo5535 Well, Die Hard 2 actually raised the stakes, putting John up against actual terrorists that he was truly out of his depth going up against, the christmas spirit was FAR GREATER due to the airport and snow settings rather than a tower in Sunny LA, the twist with the special forces group, and the characters in DH2 actually remember that DH1 happened. McClane is praised and recognized for his actions in the first movie, whereas the third film just acts like everything he did before never happened. To me, the alternate ending would've felt like it came out of nowhere since we never really see John start to transform into that kind of person. Also, I think a lot of people's issue w/ this movie is that if only Simon separated the heist from his vendetta against McClane, he would've gotten away w/ everything. All he really needed were the bomb threats to pull off the robbery, and could've played games w/ McClane on a different date by say kidnapping Holly or something. So when the "twist" around the 47-minute mark happens, it feels like another movie is trying to replace the one in progress. It was also the start of John becoming more superhuman, surviving incredibly high falls & close range explosions w/ minimal injuries. Not to mention undermining the resolution of his marriage from the previous films.
@alj61944 жыл бұрын
Oh man I hate that stuff about his marriage so fucking much. I hate it when a character or characters get a happy ending one film, and then by the next one their life is miserable.
@wesdog7844 жыл бұрын
I don't think Simon having a vendetta against McClane should be an issue, though. It makes him much more interesting and much less of a generic bad guy. It gives him a connection to McClane, gives him an opportunity to send the police on a wild goose chase all around the city, and makes us understand some of his motivations. Logically speaking, yes, he SHOULD have separated his vendetta from the heist but that would have made for a less interesting film. That's the thing about entertainment and storytelling: usually the most logical story isn't the most interesting. That's the premise behind Cinema Sins; picking apart every little thing that doesn't make sense in a movie.
@jp38134 жыл бұрын
@@wesdog784 I've come across other comments saying that the movie was more interesting during the first 47 minutes, which is the vendetta storyline. When the heist is introduced, Simon really became more generic. The thing about entertainment & storytelling is that it's versatile enough that simple premises like the original film tend to work very well b/c trying to do too much can be a detriment to the narrative.

@@The90slim90 If there is a flaw in RT, it's that the amount of reviews a movie has can ultimately create a bias in how a score in generated. If you had a movie that only had 5 reviews which were all positive, that would of course give the movie 100%, however if you had a movie that had 100 reviews, 90 of which were positive, that would only give a film a score of 90%. So obviously you shouldn't solely rely on RT for movie scores, but don't blame them if you don't like the score.

For me Rotten Tomatoes isn't a valid critical site. because it's works as a kind "opinion" system, if 200 people said something negative about a movie (despite it's good) it will still get a very lower rating. which means some people can also use this as a advantage for something which they wanted to sabotage. take Joker as a example that movie is a masterpiece, it's miles better than Birds of Prey, but it got a 69%, while BOP has 78% lol (originally it had 84%) I think Chris also mentioned this in his video, calling it as a hypocrisy by the critics

From here on out, the Die Hard films are now buddy films. I prefer the first two films when it's McClane on his own, as he is more vulnerable. I like Simon Gruber as a villain. I agree with Chris, that he has a very evil voice. I like that every time you see him,he is always eating a boiled egg, like it's his favourite snack. I think Bruce and Samuel have great chemistry on screen and i like the banter between them. My favourite part is where that female terrorist, sneaks into the security guard's office at the gold depository and slashes his neck with a hook. Blood sprays all over the wall, Simon stops her and says "I think he's dead, my dear." Just the deadpan way Simon says it. For such a great villain, i find his death to be anticlimactic. I think a reaction shot showing Simon as the rotors of the helicopter hit the pole would've worked.

The alternate ending isn't really all the villainous for McClane, he does kill a lot of people, some of them kind of cruelly, in every movie. It's definitely not a heroic way to finish off the bad guy, but is throwing him off of a building really that much better? He lost the battle but in the end he won the war, even if he had to cross the line a bit more than before, and it's not like he's killing someone innocent. Also I'm not sure if a flak jacket would even be useful at such close range without the other gear that explosives experts would use when disarming them, especially if he was the one that ended up shot by the bazooka.

Jackson is amazing as Zeus, and I loved his dynamic with John McClane), and the villain was great. This movie is such a blast to watch, and it’s so hilarious too! The ending was pretty cliche, and a little anti-climatic, but that doesn’t ruin this movie for me. It’s not as good as Die Hard, but it’s an amazing sequel!!

The only weak part of this movie, I thought, was the ending. I've grown to it though. It just seemed abrupt considering how meticulous Simon is. Maybe it would've fare a little better if Zeus didn't just conveniently knows how to pick cuffs and the two heroes got out of harms' way through less contrived means. Still, much better than the alternate ending.

To think this was first turned into a Lethal Weapon sequel, not to mention Zeus was heavily considered to be a woman and Angela Bassett was nearly cast in the role. Antagonist wise; Jeremy Irons IS a Gruber sibling, and Irons’ casting was perfect, after David Thewlis turned the role down. Also completely agree about John McTiernan, the guy shot action scene like a documentary and was probably the first director to employ handheld into the genre. Not wanting to change your mind, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. The third film lacks the claustrophobic setting, the nighttime setting, christmas, the relationship between John and Holly which was the driving force and the heart of the first two films, and for absolutely no reason it makes John a wifeless alcoholic and acts like everything he did in 1 and 2 never happened. The villain is a bit too nice also by comparison to Hans and Colonel Stuart who were nasty as hell and willing to kill anyone who got in their way.

My grandpa replied, "I'll be damned, you're Bruce Willis, aren't you?"(My grandparents were huge fans of his films). Bruce Willis confirmed it was him. I don't remember what else was said between the two of them, but I do remember two things my grandpa told me about him. 1. He swears as much in real life as he does in his movies. And 2. The ending is very poor indeed. The movie immediately throws the characters into chaotic situations, and it gradually builds up to this epic finale, which ends up being very underwhelming. In all honesty I would have preferred if the movie had ended after the boat scene when Irons gets away. The bad guy wins over McClane for a change.

I feel like Zues not being in that alternate ending may be one reason why the studio didn't really care for it. I have to say that I agree with them on that. Zues was with McClane from beginning to end throughout the story helping him. For me it would make sense for him to be there to be a part of the climax in some way shape or form. Plus, he says two of the funniest lines in the movie. "Run motherfuckers, the exterminators are here." Also, the even better "Fuck em, let em cook."

I used to think it was just because of the pg 13 rating, but having just watched it again i also think it suffers from a weak villain, a really weak set up get McClain involved in the plot, the action isn’t framed or shot like a die hard movie. Something that bugged me is that with the country going to hell in part 4, some action scenes set outside were devoid of extras/ people running around in order to benefit the chase scenes, like it looked so obvious the streets were shut down and emptied out for a movie scene, that took me out of the film whenever I saw that. Still it’s not part 5. I’d actually grade part part 4 as like maybe the 3rd best in the series after 1 and 3, but 4 at times just feels like a more tame and watered down version of part 3.

@@victorpleitez768 I honestly really enjoy the villain. He's not Alan Rickman or Jeremy Irons, but I like the concept of a high tech villain vs an analog McClane. Certainly Maggie Q was all kinds of badass in the film as the supporting villain. It does look different from previous Die Hard movies but I think that just comes with the territory of the movie being made over a decade after the previous one. Film making techniques have changed quite a lot of Bruce being 12 years older also means that some of the stunts have to be digital over being practical. I honestly find the movie really entertaining and I think the Yin and Yang pairing of Bruce Willis and Justin Long really works and MEW is excellent casting as McClane's daughter.
