I loved Ali's role in this. I live in South Korea and it was such a genuine look into how vulnerable immigrants are here, especially those working at factories. As much as I adored him, I think his ending was important because it does reflect that more often than not, it's not a happy ending getting taken advantage of like that.
@paulpaul82213 жыл бұрын
On the contrary, if this was an American show the character Ali would be severely criticized for perpetuating racial stereotypes. The only minority in the show is racially stereotyped as an undocumented immigrant. Hollywood used to do this too but in recent years they have been portraying minorities in much more empowering roles.

I remember being angry as well with the glass bridge until i realised that yeah, it's supposed to be unfair because nothing about the games are fair. They pretend that it is by having all these rules but in the end it's still rich people watching poor people killing eachother for their own amusement. And that's why i really liked that episode. As a viewer it makes you take a step back and reflect on what's actually happening
@Whitedudeabove2 жыл бұрын
I understand what they were going for, but I still didn't think it was good. Since until that point, they had made it clear that the games were supposed to be fair. I believe they themselves even said so. And just from a writing standpoint it's not that interesting with a game that has absolutely zero strategy and is just complete randomness. What made past games interesting was how differently they each tackled it and clever strategies involved. It was great for character development. This one just basically killed one of the winners by having the glass explode in the end. Like the entire game made no sense.

Someone pointed out that he also participated at the riots against his former company and was alongside his dying friend instead of withnessing his daughter's birth, which highlighted that he puts justice and morality over his personal life. He spend 1 year of being depressed and experiencing survivor's guilt and was furious at the old man. After seeing the games continuing, I'm not surprised in the slightest, that he turns back to stop them. Anyone else winning would've resulted in them taking the money and living their lives. Gi-Hun however has that hero syndrom, where he puts heart over brain and the writer planted the seeds throughout the whole series.

The old man being the master of the games had a greater purpose than just being a twist for the sake of a twist. Earlier in the show it shows the doctor character getting an unfair advantage during the games by learning what the next games will be and then getting punished for it. The reasoning for him getting punished is that the games should be "fair" to everyone. However, how is the game fair if the old man already knows everything about the games and how to win. I think him being the mastermind behind the games shows the hypocrisy of the ultra wealthy saying everyone has an equal playing field when in reality the wealthy have so many more support systems and advantages that those who are not as pillaged don't get.

Also the whole idea of "they chose to be here so we can do whatever" mentality. The whole conversation at the end with the old man was about how they don't really have a choice. You choose between dying in a game or dying in poverty, which isn't a choice at all. Again, the ultra wealthy is giving the illusion of choice while really just justifying putting people in a brutal fight to the death.

The rules of the glass game are that you have to step on the glass tiles. You can see guards with guns who would shoot you if you violated the rules of the game. Also, most of the games had the dual element of choice and fate: the players chose their order just like they chose their teams and partners and cookie shapes.
@BlueRoseFaery3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the candy episode wasn't "fair" either, it was easier or harder based on what shape you picked, and I think that was part of the point. The games master says it's fair & skill based but some people get an unfair advantage based on how they start, same as the glass game. I thought that was a clever addition to show that people in control will always say everyone is equal but some people are born (start with) an unfair advantage. Some people in the show made bad choices to get so far into debt but others were dealt a bad hand, like Ali.

This show really was a master class in storytelling IMO. I love when things are incorporated into the story that seem minuscule and inconsequential the first time you see them but carry a much deeper meaning when you go back and watch it again. Also loved the foreshadowing of each main character's fate when they first leave the game and go back to their normal lives; Deok-su escaping the gang by jumping off a bridge and then dying in the glass tile game, Ali stealing from his boss and then having his marbles stolen from him by Sang-woo, Sang-woo trying to commit suicide and then sacrificing himself in the final game, etc. Also, there's a number of small clues about the Old Man in each game where it's revealed he never had any intention of letting himself die in the game. If you pay close enough attention in the first game, you can see the robot never scans him as a potential target and his shackles aren't actually attached to the rope in the Tug of War game.

I think a lot of people are fundamentally misinterpreting the old man. The entire point is that he WAS in real danger the entire team and that was his goal: that he WAS playing the game with real risks and that was his entire point of entering them to begin with; he says this. What point is there to satisfy his disenchantment with living except for facing certain death? The show is very clear on this point, even explaining that he is terminally ill and slated to die, yet a lot of audience members hold this narrative that he wasn't in anyyyy realllll danger which does not appear accurate.

Granted, South Korea is the most Westernized/Americanized country in Asia, but it is still a good thing. Agree with most of what you had to say. I’d only add that for me, what stands out about it, is forcing the audience to view debt in a new way. Many of the characters were in debt due to their own choices and mistakes, but many were not. It didn’t matter though, because all of these people were willing to risk it ALL to be free of their crushing debt or poverty. Of course its fiction, but I enjoyed a bit of the social commentary, and it applied well to Western audiences, because vanity and wealth are held in such high regard in South Korea.

Squid games is a show with a gimmick “what if people played kid games for their lives”. Better yet, the show goes beyond that and still provides a strong narrative and message. Most the characters we understand them and they aren’t one note. The mystery element of who runs the game and who owns the island also helps drive the story forward. EPISODE 6 by far is the best episode as it really pulled the emotion to the forefront, yet it also displayed the evil within people being able to backstab if it meant their own lives. I’ve never had an episode grip so hard at the heart. Hopefully we get a season two as I can see a skeleton of a direction. Almost like John Wick we will see the survivor turning away and coming back to the evil to take it down and prevent it from ruining other’s lives.I totally see the protagonist locating the cop as the cop came to him earlier about the weird business card. Maybe they will intercept once again to team up and use each other’s resources to expose this island of death and rich bastards. Negative wise, yes the VIPs were weird and felt almost disconnected from the attitude and feeling of the show. Obviously the fat American who tried to get the cop to perform sexual acts was a jab at western culture. 😂 The show was so good that even my father got sucked into it while I was watching episode 3. He himself went back to the beginning to catch up. For a foreign show and something he usually wouldn’t watch, I was genuinely shocked that the show was able to catch him. Won’t be surprised if he would enjoy a season 2 to continue the story.

The scene Chris mentioned where they chose to return is definitely one of the best parts that made Squid Game deserving of its success. At that point you realise their lives outside the game is worse than being in it. I agree with the VIPs being out of place, but at the same time the idea that they're paying to watch people fight for their lives as entertainment shows the stark contrast between those who never have enough money, and those with too much for their own good. It's almost as if they think themselves as god and gave these people a "choice/opportunity", but in reality they're taking adv of the desperate for their entertainment. The twist with the old man was unexpected, but personally I didn't think it lessened the emotional impact. The show depicts human nature and how one would act if put in that terrible situation. Would they be outright greedy, deceitful, or sacrifice themselves? By being in a game where they could die, it shows the characters' true selves. It's honestly so good, I can't wait for season 2.

There were a lot of cultural references in the stories that I think were missed in the captioning that may have given the stories a lot more depth. My mom’s Korean, and hearing the vocal inflections and recognizing some of the words I’d heard growing up, I could tell the English captions were missing some things, but it was hard to tell what exactly. I saw some video commentary on the captions and what the native Korean-speaking critics had to say about the captions, and it was very helpful to fill in a few of the blanks. I totally agree with you about the VIPs. They could’ve cut all their dialogue and even that entire episode about them out of the show altogether, and it would’ve been an improvement. They were a complete waste, and while I do believe that was the actual point being made by their presence in the show - I think their performance could’ve made some kind effort. Kkanbu (the marbles episode) was my favorite episode of the show - such a gut punch. I didn’t mind seeing that the old man was a VIP mastermind at the end. It made me a little sad, but I think it was consistent with the premise in the show that every character we liked in the show had a dark and despicable side. The old man and the protagonist were my favorite characters in the whole show.

I personally really enjoyed the turn at the end. It gave the last bit a more emotional feeling. The turn to me didn't lessen the emotional moments of the previous episodes. The whole point of the show was building up complex characters. The good of the old man is still the good side of him. It's beautiful.
@jeepersmcgee34663 жыл бұрын
I agree. I view it as allegorical to how people divided by things like wealth can be in the same situation but totally not be in the same situation. He joined the games for a fun ending to a long and very successful life. Everyone else joined out of hopeless desperation. Of course he stays cheerful and friendly, because the stakes are nonexistent for him. He either dies here playing a game or next week in the hospital. I think it goes to show how much easier it is to be perceived as kind and good when you don't have any fears. Every other character is terrified (except maybe Sae-Beok and her partner from marbles), so naturally they'll tend toward primal behavior. Il-Nam is on top of it all, which just lends to him seeming like the morally best person there when he's perhaps the worst

I think Chris missed what the creator was going for with the glass game. It’s purposefully a game of chance to demonstrate how life is like that. The places represent for example, what family your born to, how wealthy your family is and the opportunity you get others don’t just based on happenstance. It was a perfect analogy
@Churrowhisperer3 жыл бұрын
I disagree, the creator clearly knew that he only wanted two people to make it to the end but couldn’t come up with a skill based game to narrow down the contestants enough so he came up with the glass game. He even added the glass exploding just to get rid of the girl when none of the other games had a penalty for winning like the glass game did. It was incredibly forced and contrived. Every other game had some level of skill or strategy attached to it but this one didn’t which makes it the odd one out and therefore the worst.

Unpopular opinion: i dont think the VIPs took away from the show. It made sense to me when leading up to the twist and gave more context to the games. Also i understand why their acting is so criticized, but the script didnt give them a lot to work with. There was an interview with one of the actors who played a younger VIP. He had a line where the real glass bridge was unveiled and he said "wow its bigger". He talked to the director thinking it was a translation error and that the line was meant to say something along the lines of "wow its so big". The director told him to say the line as written even though it barely makes sense. So yeah they did the best they could with the script they had to work with.

I don't think the detective is dead either. Plus, he's the only outsider that knows of the self-destruct bombing device on the ladder when he was heading to the scruba gears reserved for the VIPs.

I really hope he's still alive; I really want Squid Game to die, and he's the only one that can make it happen.

I think he is alive. He may have gotten rescued and so I think he would be taken to a local hospital. If his phone is not too damaged he could show the footage of squid game to the police who would work with the military to formulate a detailed plan on how to destroy squid game because there are a lot of guards in that island.

The marble game was such a gut wrenching watch. Between the lead and the old man to the two women coming to terms that one of them won't make it. Soul crushing.

I also hated how the glass game ended, it's like they did that just to have a way to kill off the girl, so it felt forced imo. I didn't really mind the old man twist though. And I agree with you, I love the main character's arc & his choice at the end, although I know a lot of people didn't like his choice. Overall, it was a great show! Glad to hear you reference "I Saw the Devil" as well, great freakin movie!

The old man was protected the whole way through. He was never gonna die. Even on the first game, he moves and doesn't get shot.
@Rakerong2 жыл бұрын
No he wasn't. He could have easily died in tug of war. There was no way for him to guarantee that he'd be on a good team, or that the people on his team would use his tactics. He was going to go down with them and if he somehow was spared death while the others fell, that would have exposed the scam. That game was sheer luck that the old man made it through.
@rickwrites26122 жыл бұрын
@@Rakerong Well mostly luck, I mean he did associate with people who were more likely to listen rather than say, brash ego types like that gangster, so there was some social engineering on his part if he knew from the beginning. And also as smaller underdogs they were more incentivized to adopt a technique because they knew brute strength was a gonna be a failing strategy for them there. But ultimately yea its not like he could really control it.

@@Rakerong The old man had a brain tumor that was terminal. He was willing to take that risk. And also when the lights went out and everyone was killing one another. They could have easily gone to the old guy and killed him.

I work in a glass factory, and the bridge game also pissed me off. Especially with the glass exploding. All of the glass near the end were tempered, and they do not explode like that, especially not in big mortal chunks.
@ryanmccarthy10792 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I used to work with glass, It just turns into tiny, rounder pieces. I chuckled.
@Rakerong2 жыл бұрын
But there would have been glass still remaining that were not tempered that could have blown up into big shards. Some people made correct choices and didn't break those glass, so it's possible it was a piece from that.
@therantster2 жыл бұрын
Wait, I'm confused. The majority of the glass left at the end would be normal glass because a lot of the tempered glass had already been shattered by falling players, no? I also think the glass piercing the North Korean girl was thematically powerful because the fact that she played the game fair and square, won it, and then still got fucked over reinforces the theme that no matter how much these games claim to be "fair", they are just as unfair as the real world.
@Rakerong2 жыл бұрын
@@therantster Majority remaining would be tempered glass since the players all had to step on them to cross. But there are still regular glass left from people making the right choices so they'd still be intact for the explosion to shatter them and send the pieces flying.
@therantster2 жыл бұрын
@@Rakerong oh, tempered means the stronger glass. Got it, I thought it meant the opposite for some reason. In that case, I guess it's a bit unrealistic but I would argue it's worth it from a thematic and character standpoint. But still, good point!

I totally agree with the first thing you said. I think the writing is underappreciated especially in how they gave the characters more agency, that is always a drawback with the Hunger Games genre is they're forced to play which doesn't give us anything about their characters and who they are. But the fact they voted to leave and then came back willingly gave us so much more character. Also the fact that the plot let them leave showed me i would have troubled predicting the next step I assumed that the vote would keep them on the island and was so surprised when they actaully left.
