The rods were still forged to be technically correct. Just a big billet was forged to give steel up to the job then the rods were cut from this instead of taking steel and forging it into the shape of each rod. That waterjet job still wouldn't have been cheap or indeed fast at that thickness and with that material. Based on experience operating them probably a good day or more solid running the jet. But this does save time machining later as there's none of that nasty heat effected stuff to get through that you'd see with oxy cutting them and a relatively kind surface to attack in terms of how it will impact your milling bits and how fast you can work. Waterjets are a pain in the behind to keep going, just remember this before you get tempted by one

As a Brightonian, I really enjoyed this video, especially the " inspired by" Who music. The locomotive works stood on high stilts ( due to the steep incline of the terrain) immediately to the east of Brighton station, with the low-level goods yard below it. It ended its days assembling Isetta bubble cars, oddly enough, then was derelict for many years before the whole area was redeveloped as the " New England Quarter", typical lego multi-storey flats. The locomotive works were part of Brighton's industrial heritage, which is barely remembered now,

After the Brighton line was electrified, they often hauled the London - Newhaven boat trains. Even though the Newhaven line was electrified eventually, and the three Class 70 Bulleid/Raworth electrics were put on the duty. But often the H2's especially were still used on heavy Newhaven line duty.

To quote old Dai Woodham, "Magic, pure magic." Never ceases to amaze me how lost engines and ones that have been slumbering for a long time are brought back to life again.
@nigelcartwright59862 ай бұрын
Certainly was magic for Dai, he made a fortune out of it. To quote Dai, "this is a gravy train and we've got to get on it".
@Shipwright19182 ай бұрын
British Rail was foolish enough to throw the money away to him by scrapping steam prematurely, some engines not even ten years old, and throwing away large parts of the network that may have been useful to keep and put to use again later. Fortunately Dai's yard was never short of work scrapping wagons and rails, and being a businessman he saw he could make some profit selling to enthusiasts moreso than what he could get for the metal in the engines, which could bide their time and rust at no cost to him. Profit the whole long way and favorable PR for the rest of his days and a positive legacy afterwards. Dai was a sly old fox to be sure. Given how virtually all the Barry yard engines were saved and make up a good part of the preserved steam fleet, I'd say it was a bargain to give the man his money and let him have the last laugh.

Well done to the people at the Bluebell who brought Beachly Head back to life! It's absolutely amazing to see these new build projects come to a head. Cracking looking loco and BR black really suits it. Great video. Also great to see some people with their heads out of the window. Some railways (notably NYMR) are looking to close this down, partly due to whitby running. It'll be a great shame if they do. Possibly an item for gauge the issue and something for heritage railway enthusiasts to be aware of and opposed to...

Fantastic project, fantastic loco, fantastic video, thanks Chris! I've followed the project with anticipation for 20 years and saw BH complete in the shed weeks before launch, respect to all those who dedicated so much of their lives to this. One of my earliest books on railways, picked up at a jumble sale nearly 60 years ago, was "British Atlantic Locomotives" by CJ Allen and I loved it, read it so many times because it was full of what seemed like a fantastic story of fast paced innovation, it still seems to me the greatest period of loco development. It was probably one of the influences that made me want to become a professional engineer. So to see BH running is marvellous, and she looks like the most handsome, clean-lined engine you could wish for. On my hit list to ride behind soon. I have to take issue with you on one thing - a 4-4-2T is NOT an Atlantic - Atlantics are tender engines, just like Pacifics, Hudsons etc. I do adore the Adams radial, another of my favourite engines, and so pleased the Atlantic crew are getting to grips with her at long last. But it's not an Atlantic. Where on earth did you get that brilliant parody of "Won't be Fooled Again"? Great piece of work to capture the style! Well done Chris and thanks for posting.

Great video. That loco looks great and is a credit to the group. Regarding your comment on cylinder block patterns, with technology as it is today its much easier and cheaper to make a model in CAD, cut the pattern in polystyrene and cast it that way. No wooden patterns to store and less issues for the foundry.
@bluebellsalmon2 ай бұрын
Indeed, we've used that technique for replacement cylinder blocks on three locos (C, H and P) on the Bluebell now. The Atlantic's cylinders were produced before that technique became available, and similarly the new block now in 'Fenchurch' was a traditional hand-made wooden pattern produced by Bluebell volunteers a good many years back.

Just a small correction - water jet cutting is NOT superior to forging for component like rods, it produces an inferior product metallurgically. As you say, water jet cutting preserves the grain microstructure of the steel as rolled into a flat plate, but forging causes the grain microstructure to flow around the shape which gives superior strength and resistance to fatigue. BH is never going to be run at 80 mph like the original, so the compromised strength and fatigue resistance isn't a problem, but if it was a product that was intended for main line high speed service then forging would still be the method of choice. Great video though! Thanks for posting. Marion
@TheHoveHereticАй бұрын
I'm going to concur with other posts .... best video to date (even if I admit to a slight* Brighton bias when it comes to mainland standard gauge railways). That characteristic wiggle the loco displays when working hard is something I'd only previously associated with the Ffesterbahn's 'Small England' type. Something to do with a comparatively short coupled wheelbase and those stonking great outside cylinders I imagine. That lined BR mixed traffic livery looks fantastic. OK, colossal bias!

Such an interesting story, even if the UK has their fair share of new build locomotives, theyre still big news. Especially for someone like me from a place that doesnt really get stuff like new builds, or see locomotives larger than a small tender engine operating much. We also dont have much in the name of Atlantics arond my whereabouts in Denmark. We only ever had 1 Atlantic type class, the DSB P-class. Our P class locomotives were built around the same time as these Brighton Atlantics, but are very different in styling. And while 2 are in preservation, 3 if we count the Rebuilt Pr 908 which was rebuilt into a low axleweight pacific in the 1940's, neither one have been under steam since the 1986. The Danish national railway museum seems to have plans for using one of the P class, 917, as an operational locomotive in the future while its sister, 931, will remain on static display in original condition. Either way Atlantics might actually be a pretty good fit for heritage operations on larger heritage lines or mainline runs. Theyre decently powerful and fast allowing them to squeeze into modern timetables, a bit more fuel economical than larger designs, yet still capable of pulling a decently sized train. For a place like the Bluebell, it seems like an ideal match.

What a marvellous video! I saw Beachy Head at the Bluebell's Branch Line Gala in May, just before she steamed for the first time - even sat in the workshops it looked amazing! One question - any reason why its a replica of an existing member of the class, rather than a 'next in the class' like Lady of Legend or Tornado? Is it because Beachy Head uses parts from the original 32424, and/or legacy/original parts in general? :)

Hey there CEG. Good to see you're still kicking. Loving the hair these days man. So here's my ask. How about heading up a campaign for a plastic scale model of the Beachy Head in 1/32 or 1/35 scale? I've kept all my modelling gear for years, waiting for a decent kit of a classic UK steam loco to come out. I don't wan't a train set. Just a detailed accurate kit to build, paint and commune with. Then sit on a shelf looking pretty. An Atlantic would be perfect. Please take up this cause Chris. No other bugger is.

It is astonishing to me how many steam locos are operational in the UK (greetings from Canada). and that new builds are underway. But - from where shall they acquire fuel? Aren't all the coal mines in UK being shut down?
@ChristheXelent2 ай бұрын
Yes, they are. At the moment, heritage lines are sourcing whatever coal they can find. Newer stuff is coming from Columbia, South Africa and Poland. But there's been tons of ex-Russian coal left around in shipping yards since the Ukrainian war began, some of which has been snapped up for use on heritage lines. In some cases, real coal is being mixed in amongst the experimental biocoal.

Hey Thanks for turning in. It's not entirely clear in any biographical accounts which type it was; it's not even clear whether said rumours were true or not. But given the time it happened, it wouldn't surprise me if it was intended to be a H2.

I’m confused You said that the tractive effort of an H2 was 20,800 pounds, or about 20.8 short tons. If South Foreland hauled 324 tons, that means the H2 was hauling between 648,000 and 725,760 pounds depending on which measurement was used. So basically that H2 was hauling 30 to 35 times it’s tractive effort

@@TheBlueEM2 How about, for something completely different, they could build a new LSWR H16 4-6-2T? They were basically tank engine versions of the S15 class, which has many survivors, so they could just take one of the preserved members. What's more, most of the parts, including the boiler and motion, are basically already there, and AFAIK no British 4-6-2T's survive, so this would be a good idea for a new-build.
