A religious caller named Timothy questions why the atheist hosts engage with theists if they don't actually care about religion. The hosts Matt and Jimmy explain they want to have thoughtful discussions and help people think critically. Timothy shares his beliefs and how he feels spiritually guided by God. The hosts ask him questions to try to understand his reasoning and epistemology.
Timothy struggles to directly answer their questions, which leads to some frustration and contention. The hosts try various thought experiments to get Timothy to recognize flaws in his logic regarding using prayer/personal revelation to know truth, bringing up examples of other religions, but Timothy cannot reconcile the contradictions. The call ends without resolution as Timothy continues giving incoherent and evasive responses to their questions.

I feel sorry for that nail you hit so directly on the head. Accepting that you don't know is the first step toward being a skeptic, and it is sheer arrogance on the part of theists that they think that they do know and that it is even possible to know.anything about a being that they would admit is undetectable and untestable.

The favorite saying of religionists is: "I know that I know that I know." Christians, in particular, such as Timothy in this call, then tend to point to an "inner witness", which could be termed "the argument from Romans 8:16", where the writer mentions 'the holy spirit bearing witness with the believer's spirit'. Of course, in that verse the reference is specifically to being "God's children". However, Christians apply that to everything else.

Pastor, trips to church over the years, indoctrination, I recommend a clip of the historicity of Jesus to a Christian, I know she didn't watch it as I asked her questions about it and she couldn't answer anything yet she recommended a podcast to listen to about God breathing life into the world, it was an hour long. I took the time to listen it yet she couldnt give 10 min of her time, she didn't want to hear or see anything that would doubt her fantasy. She is in complete denial along with the rest of them

jimmy and matt are really calm with this thick-headed poor soul. it's sad to see how poorly some people user their minds. matt's masterful dissection starting at 10:00 is lost on Timothy

We need to seek evidence of whether there is a genetic mutation in some of our species; one that causes the logic centre to malfunction. It’s so exasperating, but hats off to Matt and the team for providing the connection with reality service. Well done.

Timothy is finally living proof that it IS possible for a human being to have an IQ that is exceeded by their shoe size. In the UK, from a comedy show we had here, called The Fast Show, or it may have been Harry Enfield, both of which were very popular, there was a character called Tim Nicebutdim. I think i know where the inspiration came from. Lol.

This is why there are 41,000 versions of Christianity. Because the “ONE true word” is so ambiguous. Or…41,001 with Timothy’s version. Or 41,002 with “Kate’s” version. Or 41,003 with “Dave’s” version….

I don't know if this caller was a troll or not - sometimes it's hard to tell. What I can say is that if this caller was being genuine, he was not remotely prepared for a conversation of this caliber. When Jimmy and Matt used the term "mechanism," in relation to how to figure out what's true and what's not, I truly don't believe this caller understood what they were asking about. Fascinating conversation.
