Yeah, this guy reminds me of myself. Everything that excited terrified people I was with when I went out to share the gospel. Oh wow, this atheist has a sense of morality? I can tell them how to find true compassion that goes from God! People with me: _"No that was only given to you by god! Why do you deny him?"_ Me: Wait... what? He has compassion! He wants a deeper source. People with me: _"All compassion comes from God! He has none!"_ Me: WTF is wrong with you?

I think it was brilliant; the way that you (Jimmy and Matt both) did not "preach" to the guy or try to "convert" him to atheism, you just asked him about his beliefs and, in so doing, guided him to reach, on his own, (what I believe to be) the proper conclusion. The more I watch of this show, the more thoroughly impressed I am with the approaches, methods, and attitudes of the various hosts. I think *all* of you guys (and gals) are doing a *great* job here.

In response to the caller's initial question, if you'd like to engage in discourse on these kinds of topics in a way that specifically attempts to bypass the backfire effect, I'd highly recommend looking into street epistemology. Instead of directly confronting someone, can have the person sort of confront themselves and assist them to think through things and reach conclusions on their own. The backfire effect can be seen as a sort of defense mechanism that can trigger in response to a perceived attack. However, the backfire effect seems much less likely to trigger when the attack is coming from within. If it does trigger then since the person is essentially arguing with themself, the likely result seems to be some form of cognitive dissonance, which can be quite uncomfortable and has ways of working itself out one way or another..

I tried to make evolution and creationism compatible by substituting the clay that God used to create Adam with evolution but I kept realizing that there are lots more contradictions or statements in the Bible that would not be coming from an immensely merciful, all knowing and perfect God; but I have been "Catholic" for 55 years. I stopped going to church since the las two years.

Congratulations on being able to start to find reason after 50+ years. It's very difficult to change the magical way of irrational thinking, and to accept the possibility that you may have wasted most of your life believing nonsense. So I applaud you and your bravery. It is not easy. Just remember - any single moment seeing reality as it actually is, is worth it. It took me 25-30 years as a fundamentalist, and I occasionally feel sad about my wasted youth, but I cherish every moment as a clear-thinking free person.

I stopped believing over 25 years ago. One reason i did was because I asked myself, if someone gave me the same evidence I presented for god for another god why would I not believe it? If the evidence is good enough for Christianity to be true, why isn't the same evidence be good enough for another god.

@@zapkvrWRONG!! many great people used the bible in their work including scientists. Columbus believed the world was round because of the bible. The big bang theory was derived from the bible. Issac newton the greatest scientist who ever lived discovered gravity, invented calculus and invented the modern telescope actually used complex mathematics from the bible in some of his work. He concluded exactly what century Israel would be reborn in and that another nation would help. The current situation of the world is all laid out in an almost perfect setting for told in the Bible. No nation has ever been destroyed and came back but Israel has come back all 3 times the bible said it would. The bible said that to show GODS strength and power he would create Israel in one day. The UN voted and Israel was born in one day in that hour. A Muslim army attacked immediately while 200 Jewish civilians mostly women using bolt action rifles held them off. The bible said an uncountable amount of Jews from every nation from around the world would return to Israel. We WATCHED it happen. In 1967 3 Muslim armies backed up by the USSR planned for over a year to destroy Israel. Israel destroyed all 3 armies within 6 days and like God they rested on the 7th. The regained the west bank, golan heights,Jerusalem and the very desert wondered by Moses. This was the exact Israel from the time king Solomon lost it. People like the philistines have been found and even DNA tested after being excavated. We would have never known they existed if not for the bible. The Bible says only a fool or a liar says there is no god.

I can't remember which apologist I heard say this, but I heard one say that if the Bible said that 2 + 2 equals to 5, that he would assume that math was wrong and not the Bible. That he would begin from the position that 2 + 2 was indeed 5 and then work backwards to try and prove that it was true. When You Believe in a dogmatic source of knowledge, and that source does not line up with what is logical or reasonable, people who begin from the position of that sources perfection will generally ignore The Logical problems and instead side with the Dogma.

From what I have seen most hosts of The Line and Atheist Experience are nice provided the person is honest and answers their questions without too many dodges. More or less if someone calls and tries to have a honest conversation with them they are kind and patient with them. From what I see the hosts enjoy these calls which may be why they are able to be a lot nicer. The issue is with many of these call in shows you get many who call in and just want to preach/convert, dodge answering the questions asked, or acknowledging when they are wrong. Unfortunately I think these calls are the ones the hosts do not enjoy as much as they have to expend so much energy just to get answers to simple questions.

People who would without the threat of hell and the promise of the reward of Heaven would be doing atrocious things to other people because they can't wrap their minds around secular morality. Certainly it's better for someone to believe in God, and therefore not commit murders that they otherwise would, then have them believing the truth at the cost of the lives of others.

I’m so used to your titles telegraphing crazy/angry/bigoted callers getting shut down, this one made it sound like Landon was another smug, obstinate Christian with a “logical proof” that his god is real. But he was cool, respectful, humble, and came to this with good faith and an open mind! Sure, he called to ask for tools to approach and logically dispute other, more radical theists - and *ended up* debunking his own believes - but the title omits that reason for his call so it kind of paints him as what I assumed. Just a minor grievance over unfortunate phrasing. Great discussion otherwise, I agree with other comments that you two were great!

I think that challenging a belief only causes the believer to double down and resort to confirmation bias to maintain them. Epistemology and self reflection are two of the best tools to start the critical thinking process. As Matt made clear however, the person must first value logic and truth over faith, or it is pointless to even attempt the conversation.

There needs to be a humanist alternative to religious communities. A community can not only share each other's company and enrich each other's lives but also do good things in the world. There may be such groups around the world such as in Austin, but I live in one of the most densely populated places (Southern California) and I can find no such group. Sure there are some anti-theist groups that do activism, but a group that's primary purpose is attacking other people is not what I'm talking about. There are also the Universalist Unitarian churches but they don't really have any shared foundational belief at all.

Hi,the Netherlands here. Excuse me for the grammar. I think religion, all religions,is a evolutionair thing. Because we are aware of death. That makes us afraid of it. It is comfortabel too think there is something "higher", And don't have to think about:WHY. Accept that life is random is hard. Btw.I called myself Agnost. Greetings from Amsterdam.

No. It's a turn of phrase people use to ease their own anxieties about breaking down a wall that stands between them and taking off the mask. I use it all the time and it's a proxy for "I'd like to take the mask I hide my true self behind off for a moment with you"

Theism relys on faith, thats literally ignoring facts and logic to believe something thats not based on facts or logic.

@FightXScience-wh6kx OK let me re state. Theist rely on faith and or an ignorance of modern science and basic facts to come to the theist conclusion. But in my book both are the same, as I view faith as an ignorance of facts. Yes you can make the point that agnostic people or fringe religions don't necessarily, but when it comes to the major religions, they absolutely do. Science disproves these theist beliefs and if someone still believes them, the must use faith to come to that conclusion, or at best ignorance and a lack of knowledge of the world around them.

@FightXScience-wh6kx Furthermore any major religious beliefs stemming from jewdo Christianity rely on 1 faith or 2 lack of education. And anyone who lacks education and is self aware, I believe would have to refer to faith. Flatt earthers believe they have evidence l, but obviously this phenomenon comes from lack of education or brain power to receive such education. Same applies to most theist.

@FightXScience-wh6kx OK let me put it this way, if you choose the believe and explanation of the creation of man/the world/ or the universe, that was created 1000's of years ago over what moderns science has to say then yes you either rely on faith or stupidity.

The question is about the small time line of the here & now & the confirmation day of death revealing that all ppl denying the Gospel message were wrong on all of their assessments of the book of Genesis , the young age of the earth found in the Bible . Found only in the Bible by truly born Bible ,believing Saints of JESUS CHRIST . “Christian” they never recant their faith. No such thing as used to be a Christian then recanted ! Never was from your beginning . 1 John 2:18-19
