Thanks for this video! I have used The Talk: Sexuality with my 8/9 year old, and we are currently going through The Talk: Changes, she is almost 10 now. It's been really good. We used Before I Was Born (God's Design for Sex) first, when she was about 7. This year my son, who just turned 8, will start with that book. Like you, I was not given much of a "talk" when I was a kid, other than a necessary explanation of periods when the time came, and sexuality was definitely not treated in a healthy way in our family. Anything to do with sex was "wrong" (until marriage, then magically it becomes an acceptable thing) which definitely skewed a lot of things for me. I was adamant that I would teach my kids about sex at a young, yet appropriate age, because I was exposed to sex talk from friends as young as 6. Kids are going to hear it or see it in this world, I would much rather have it come from me first than from somewhere else. And the forbidden fascination of what you're "not allowed" to know about compounds guilt and misunderstanding. Sex is normal, created by God, and good, as all of God's creation is, and it's important, I think, to teach our children this. I loved what the Gilkersons say about this in the beginning of The Talk, which is why I purchased those resources.

Yes, completely agree with all you said! Adding the Before I was Born book to my list now. Thank you for recommending it!

@@HomegrownHomeschool The copy of Before I was Born that I have is by Carolyn Nystrom and is an older edition. Recommended ages are 5-8. Christian Book has an updated version which I haven't seen. Just so you know! The one I have talks about physical differences between men and women, and gives a brief but clear explanation of what sex is, and prefaces that by explaining it is a special gift that God gives a married couple. Then is goes into baby development and birth. I really liked the approach.

I’m starting this way too late for my older three kids and probably too late for my youngest who is a freshman but he’s very innocent so hopefully I can still be of use to him with these books. I ordered before the video was even over.

I think they can help at any age! It’s never too late to have these talks with them.

I appreciate this video. These are all resources I’ve been looking at and considering for my almost 10 year olds. They all look very well done!

Can't wait to check out these resources! My oldest is 10 and I've felt a need to have some of these conversations, but haven't felt sure how to go about it. These sound amazing!

Same for us. My son just turned 10 and I keep feeling the pull to have these conversations but it can be challenging to know where to start

I'm about to talk to my 7yo son.. wondering which one is good
@HomegrownHomeschool3 ай бұрын
I think it really depends on the topic you want to tackle since they all cover similar but different things. I’d maybe say The Good and the Beautiful since it hits a lot of everything and Good Pictures Bad Pictures so he can protect himself against pornography addiction. They’re all great resources though. We are still making our way through them.

What recommendations would you have for someone whose child is in secular school but you want to teach them yourself at home and not have your child participate in the school/state approved sex ed curriculum?
@HomegrownHomeschool8 ай бұрын
If you’re going for an overall sec ed curriculum I’d suggest the one from The Good and the Beautiful since it touches on everything and I’d also see what the schools plan is for my child when these things are being taught and where they will be. Especially since you never know what the teacher will say, what they will promote and what your child will learn/hear if they’re in the same room but with a different activity.

Do you plan to teach boys and girls together? (Not sure what children you have…) I have an almost 10 year old girl and an almost 8 year old boy and feel maybe it should be separate, and only for her right now. 🤔

My initial plan was to teach together but just think I will probably do it separate (I have a 10 yo boy and a 7yo girl, so our situation is a bit flipped).
