That is only partially true about still being under Christianity. He referenced the imagery of the Bible but the satanic characteristics and personifications are much older and much more broad than just being exclusive to Christianity. If you were to take the mainstream perspective of northern paganism, you would put “The giants” in place of “Satan” but the ideas behind them are relatively the same. But you’ll learn more of that when you delve into mythological and archetypal thought and the history it is responsible for. What is true about your idea is that you are still under the imagery of Christianity but the ideas that underlie that imagery are almost ageless and also certainly not originating from Christianity either. My main point is that you’re not entirely under the classification of Christianity if you use satan as merely a concept rather than the specific imagery the Bible provides. Also I want to make clear than I’m not at all disputing that Quorthon used this reasoning to abandon “satanically themed” lyrics but just the underlying truth behind that idea.

Christianity is by no means the first or even near oldest religious system so I think it’s kind of ignorant for vin to assume that he’s taking a Christian perspective inherently. Obviously, given the imagery of the song, it’s takes a Christian approach but he should know better from black metal that they’re not 100% serious with what they’re saying maybe just some general themes

Bouddhism and Hinduism give us the answer. we need balance. it's human we're not perfect. we've got the light and the shadows inside of us due to the 3D and physical world.If we were more etherical it would be easier for us to be more in inconditionnal love. He never claimed to be satanist or christian. He just spit his art to the world with a huge subconscious background that his really a particularity of artist of the eighties, we will never have such an abundant way of seeing music in a long time. @@connorrekdahl3754 You're 100% correct but when you are not from the scene or develloped an obsession about metal it's normal to see it in a different way than from the historical original spirit of when it was released. it's the beauty of music you can interpret the song and alchemize it in our own individual perception. Artist in general (I'm sure Quorthon too) love to let the listener interpret their work in their own way. It's like a multiverse of perception and it's what make it so cult cause there's a billion approach to understand the lyrical aspect.

The music is not that of doom really so much as it is chaotically triumphant, arguably itself coming from the perspective of Satan who has taken another soul into the eternal fire. this is honestly the most bad ass song ever recorded and Qurthon was more just tying to tell horror tales than the ideological satanism of later black metal ,his exploration of pagainism was much more personal. Still one of the greatest bands ever and in all fairness though he never wanted to admit it this is his sort of opposite response to the Manowar song Bridge of Death.

His interviews never had much to to with reality or truth. He was playing a role for advertisment and entertainment, as most entertainers do. He always had entertaining stories that were obviously fake. Like when he talked about the cover to this album and said that the model didn't want to wear the goat head mask. Don't remember how he said he persuaded him. It was a funny story but anyone can see for them self that it's the cartoon goat head pasted over the models head. He also said he never heard Venom, though anyone can hear that he more or less made covers of at least two songs. I think he was funny. A bit of a Spinal Tap in real life. But of course that movie is good because it's stereotypical.

@@chrissibersky4617 I find it hard to believe that someone as tuned into metal as Quorthon obviously was, taking it in directions no one had ever gone before and which would have been impossible in the NWOBHM era, hadn't heard of Venom. But other than Senile Decay, Countess Bathory & maybe one or two others, I can't think of many Venom songs that sound anything like Bathory. Obviously Quorthon would never write a songs like "1000 Days in Sodom" or "In League with Satan". Venom is basically rock & roll. They're fun to rock out to. This is not that. Bathory produced more straight up clones than just about any band I can think of. Their first three albums lay down such deep tracks for Black Metal that it took years for anyone to have the originality to add something new.

Bathory's "Born for burning" is more or less a plagiarism of Venoms "Don't burn the witch. There's much more but that one I think most people can hear. If you played guitar you'd recognize a lot ov Venom in Bathory. Chord pattern, rhythm and melodies. Even up to Blood Fire Death where he play that teasing melody from Venom's "Teachers pet" though it makes no sense in Bathory's case.

You're also preaching to the choir, as I consider Venom's first album to be one of the best records of all time in any genre. However: I'm not as familiar with Venom as you clearly are. To me, Venom is basically their first album. I know the songs I mentioned as sounding like Bathory are later, but I only know a handful. So I'll defer to your superior knowledge of Venom post In Nomine Satanas. And the idea that Born for Burning is similar to a Venom song is easy for me to believe. At the same time though, Venom slips easily into NWOBHM. Bathory does not. It's a narrower and more refined sound, as far as Black Metal goes. That was my point, that, and that the sound wasn't refined further after Bathory for a long time.

I read an interview with Quarthon where he said he got the majority of their lyrics from comic books and horror novels, so he wasn't really serious was just trying to be appear dark and ominous and was surprised that people took it seriously. "Around 1986, I realised we were actually just writing albums full of religious hocus-pocus, satanic rubbish and demonic crap. I was not a Satanist and knew absolutely nothing about occultism or demonic affairs, so I asked myself why should I really be writing about that shit. Atmospheric music .Mr. Thomas Børje Forsberg (Sweden) happened to be gifted with a great talent for guitar-playing an song-writing. I just think it’s sad that not for a moment they didn’t ponder that the lyrics might have a sort of sarcastic, flipped on its head sort of meaning as much of black metal does. To assume he’s taking a Christian point of view is very naive. Part of it might be to only play off of the Christians interpretation of “satanism” to give more of a profound feeling for anyone listening but to assume he is serious is not understanding black metal lyrics. Like bathory is a Swedish band, why would they interpret the topic as western Christians would? It makes much more sense to do it for shock value and to play off of people’s assumptions based off of what they know from fundamentalist Christianity

We can only speculate on original intent, art can mean different things to different people, I consider a lot of what some might find offensive as being cautionary, rather than celebratory, and honestly how one sees things in art is truly subjective. What you take away from art, how it reveals you to yourself, is more important than the intended meaning itself, if your interpretation matches the artist's, it merely means you share some overlapping perceptions, regardless it's value to the viewer is in what it reveals to the viewer about themselves, not whether or not the same thing is perceived. When a catholic sees the painting of the triumph of Michael, they likely see it as good winning over evil, etc. Inversely a luciferian satanist might feel empathy for satan, and see Michael as a tyrant, something like that, so what you take away from it, what it means to you is more relevant to self Discovery, and forming the proper interpretation of the world by it.

Obviously vin and Sori will take it then way that it seems to be relevant to them but their interpretation is far less likely to actually be relevant to the artists intention. Just knowing black metal especially Scandinavian black metal, it’s overwhelmingly likely that there is an element of sarcasm and mocking intent given their history with such Christians. I think it’s reasonable to claim that Scandinavian black metal musicians do not see life through the lens of fundamental Christianity or Christianity at all for that matter, but they understand that most of the world as a whole does so it gives them a large audience to reference by taking such a perspective like I’m enter the eternal fire or even call from the grave. Like I said I don’t disagree with what you pointed out as personal interpreting can often overwhelm and impersonal understanding but I really don’t take a personal understanding but see it as a wide scale implication tho it may be a good bit for shock value as it’s clear that black metal likes to do from time to time. I just think what you said isn’t the most relevant for what I’m pointing out. They assume it to be “objectively” saying what they think it does as well but they don’t ponder other possibilities which is mostly what I’m pointing out. Always best to consider it from multiple angles rather than just the personal interpretation like they do. The only thing that they recognized is that “lord” could go both way but they don’t explore that idea as much as they should’ve to get a well rounded idea on what the artist might be trying to imply, as there are fundamental themes that artists attempt to get across

Black metal is very trickster like in that way, almost none of it is really surface level implications but rather levels of intricacy that require abstract speculation and more vague consideration than what might seems to be required initially. @@ALEXGIBSONCMG I do, in some sense, feel like “personal interpretation” might be a slight cop out to actually ponder said intended meanings but none the less personal interpretations are likely going to be the most relevant for your own take away but I think there should be a balance there where you don’t forget intended meanings just to have a more personal take, and vise versa. But I don’t think you’re using it as a cop out I’m just saying that many do use it as a way to relieve their responsibility for thinking about it rather critically or abstractly
