Slipknot was supposed to be signed by Sony for their record deal. The meeting was set for them to sign a contract with Sony, but they had one more show to play before that date to sign with Sony. One of the higher ups in Sony had seen them play at that show and immediately said that they should not be with Sony and made the contract go away. That person went so far as to say that they are terrible and if they are the future of music, that would be in a world that he does not want to be apart of. So Road Runner signed them instead before Slipknot released their first album. That record did so incredibly well that Sony asked if they would please leave Road Runner and transfer to Sony. They refused to sign with Sony and stayed with Road Runner. Corey said in an interview that he wrote this song about that event. Quotes like "all the money in the world can't buy me". Because that dude said that if they are the future of music it isn't a world that he wants to be apart of is why the line "throw a suicide party" is in the song. The band actually mailed that dude the song along with the lyrics just to rub it in his face asking him to please honor his words by taking his own life hahaha listen to the song again now that you know about this story and things make so much more sense.

Actually, Sony wanted them to recreate songs like Wait and Bleed, something that makes money and wanted to milk money from their image instead of the music they wanted to create and being real. And yes they do send dead flowers.

@@Hairull666 Yes to the dead flowers, but no to Sony wanting them to write songs for radio. They never had an agreement with Sony and never signed with them. Sony wanted them really bad after the success of the first album, but they refused to go to them. It is true that people wanted more radio friendly songs, but that wasn't Sony themselfs. They don't have any say for a band that isn't on their label. It is too bad that they actually did go and write more radio friendly songs for the third album and that is because that famous producer Rick. They should have stayed with Ross

Corey has said that he thinks Slipknot was more of a bridge between Nu Metal and the New Wave of American Metal. I think the Nu - Metal time-line might be more like 1996 - 2003.

Ian H ya he totally bridged the gap. I saw them live in late 1998 and 1999. They we’re nothing like nu-Metal to us, more on the core side. Also, Korn created the nu metal sound in 1993 after they started using 7 strings. It just didn’t catch on till about 96-98, once the radio picked up on the craze. Damn I miss those days lol.

Unpopular opinion, I don’t consider Slipknot “nu-Metal.” It was only the time frame. The musicality is way much more than any by the numbers Nu metal group. You want to shame me all you want and call me a poser go ahead Idgaf. And also watch how they’ve evolved in the past Vol.3 took more risk and I’d say Iowa was their biggest risk they took. And it worked. This band brought heavy heavy music in early 00’s as Pantera did in the 90’s.

What I really appreciate about you two is that even though you are Christians like myself, you can appreciate good music from bands like Slipknot. A lot of times Christians will call these guys devil worshippers because of their music but in reality at least I know Corey Taylor is a good, humble person. John Cooper from Skillet did an interview and told of a time he met Corey Taylor and said he was a fantastic guy. Keep rocking you two!

555 in ancient numerology is the symbol for humanity, 666 is the symbol of chaos (not the "number of the beast" as has been popularized by Christians). The use of the term heretic in this context is used to define a social and cultural outcast. Corey is essentially saying if you are 555 like any other ordinary human, then he is 666 or chaos as chaos is defined as something that offsets the regularity and opposes the mainstream. He is drawing a line between himself and the rest of the music industry and society as a whole. This is solely my interpretation of the lyrics and it is backed by several lovely people on Genius, however, everyone is entitled to their own interpretation and opinions.

Nice! I suggested this one! I remember hearing this for the first time feeling like "oh shit they got darker" lol Then I discovered Dark Funeral and Cannibal Corpse. I actually love the song, it's simple but heavy. As a kid I knew bands used certain imagery to shock or fit the image of the band. I still loved all the tongue and cheek satanic themes from bands like Slayer and other Metal bands.

There are a few other reasons why they used 555. One is to one-up people who feel they are the norm, 5 being the halfway point to a base 10 that everything in society and with rank gets based on, not only do they one-up the norm, but it puts them in a bad light. Also, during live shows, Corey was known to switch it up with "fine-fine-fine" and "sic-sic-sic". Which is why towards the end of that performance he pointed to his head because they were still running with this idea of being "sick in the head" or as they called it on the 1st album "SiC". 30 seconds - 16 - 8 - 4 are time signatures. Once again, a big part of this song is Corey criticizing the music industry. "Let me tell you why, I haven't the slightest, I'm teaching your brightest" He doesn't understand why, but people use them, and they continue to teach the use of this formulated system, but Slipknot doesn't stick to the formula.

I would say they are an extreme metal band combining elements of industrial metal, thrash, and even death metal. Yeah their first album or two had a few elements of nu-metal, but they are far and away from korn, bizkit, coal chamber, etc and other "nu-metal" bands. They also are far heavier than straight forwars "heavy metal". It would be more accurate to call them extreme metal
