When god murdered people, did it count as forgiveness? Serious question.

Early Tool, when they were young and hungry, to me feels so raw and angry.

It's quite interesting to see the direct contrast between Maynard saying 'I survive on the poison you feed me' in this song and later calming to be inoculated against the venom of 'The deceiver' in Fear Inoculum. The whole journey of Tool from Opiate to Fear Inoculum is a really interesting and thought provoking experience.

I think the song is called 'Bottom' as is the phrase 'rock bottom'. It's a song about avoiding confronting yourself. It's a song about refusing to address what your drug addiction is doing to yourself. He has no compassion for himself, he feels weak willed, he has no desire to try, he's on his knees pissing about moaning about it, he feels broken and ugly, he looks up and sees 'the enemy' (the addict who keeps feeding him drugs). He still makes his existence about those poisons though and so he feels guilty, weak, and hates himself, he feels dead inside. But his self-hatred, guilt, and feelings of weakness are all things that are signs he wants to stop. They are negative things i.e. 'shit' but they keep building up until he isn't afraid of the confrontation anymore and is able to see himself clearly i.e. 'naked'.

It HAS been interesting watching you work backwards towards Undertow. I wore Undertow out in 1993 and have been a fan in chronological order since then. Lateralus didn't appeal to me initially specifically because of the "preachiness" and "adulting" it expressed. It didn't really jibe with the mosh pit I was thrashing in for their Aenima tour LOL. I'm glad I was able to grow older with them and appreciate their growth and maturity.

I honestly forgot how badass this song is! Honestly, the "Undertow" album isnt my favorite album... but it's pretty close. It's definitely in my top 5.

If you're in your late 30's or early 40's, remember when this album came out? We were like, "Wow"! And then Aenima came out, and we were like "Holy Shit"! We loved these songs because we were young, and everything is better when you're young. But I still get the same feeling to this day, when I hear "Opiate" and "Undertow" and "Aenima". And I loved "Fear Inoculum". I didn't expect Maynard to come out screaming at the top of his lungs, like some did. He's 50 some years old for Christ's sake. The instrumentals were AMAZING though. Loved the "Lateralus" and "10'000 Days" albums too. But the early stuff still gets me fired up, and I think "Fear Inoculum" was a beautiful encore to Tool's discography................but I hear they may be working on an EP throughout this quarantine? Maybe something good will come of this stay at home catastrophe.

This has been my personal theme song for almost thirty years now. Still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it and I've listened to it THOUSANDS of times. I miss angry Maynard.

Love you guys. It's been a rough couple of months to say the least. I love Tool. "Been an OGT since the 1st EP". You guys give some pleasure analyzing these songs in ways I never understood. They say you have hit rock bottom before you can ascend. Shit adds up at the bottom.
