When god murdered people, did it count as forgiveness? Serious question.

@Jeffery Tucker It would also help if you'd realize God can give back life just as easy as he can take it away. There are for certain situations where he killed or ordered the killing of people where innocent people fell victim as well. God is very much aware of this and he can resurrect them in the future. Where we see death as a final thing, it is only potentially temporary in God's eyes.

@@VinAndSori Huh? Don't get me wrong, I understand that sometimes destruction simply is the only "good" answer. But how do you Justify it? I know that if the question is reversed I say: I know not, there is no justification. Sometimes you just have to die because that's how it is. In such cases I cannot accept religion however. I do however accept that sin terrible. Sometimes some people have to die. Or? I hope you understand my chaotic thoughts.

I think the song is called 'Bottom' as is the phrase 'rock bottom'. It's a song about avoiding confronting yourself. It's a song about refusing to address what your drug addiction is doing to yourself. He has no compassion for himself, he feels weak willed, he has no desire to try, he's on his knees pissing about moaning about it, he feels broken and ugly, he looks up and sees 'the enemy' (the addict who keeps feeding him drugs). He still makes his existence about those poisons though and so he feels guilty, weak, and hates himself, he feels dead inside. But his self-hatred, guilt, and feelings of weakness are all things that are signs he wants to stop. They are negative things i.e. 'shit' but they keep building up until he isn't afraid of the confrontation anymore and is able to see himself clearly i.e. 'naked'. But that's the beauty of good song lyrics is you can get many things out of them. That's why MJK doesn't publish his lyrics or explain what _he_ meant, he'd rather they mean what your brain thinks it needs to hear out of them.

It HAS been interesting watching you work backwards towards Undertow. I wore Undertow out in 1993 and have been a fan in chronological order since then. Lateralus didn't appeal to me initially specifically because of the "preachiness" and "adulting" it expressed. It didn't really jibe with the mosh pit I was thrashing in for their Aenima tour LOL. I'm glad I was able to grow older with them and appreciate their growth and maturity. Thanks for the chance to watch someone else discover these great songs and hear them with fresh perspective!

We loved these songs because we were young, and everything is better when you're young. But I still get the same feeling to this day, when I hear "Opiate" and "Undertow" and "Aenima". And I loved "Fear Inoculum". I didn't expect Maynard to come out screaming at the top of his lungs, like some did. He's 50 some years old for Christ's sake. The instrumentals were AMAZING though. Loved the "Lateralus" and "10'000 Days" albums too. But the early stuff still gets me fired up, and I think "Fear Inoculum" was a beautiful encore to Tool's discography................but I hear they may be working on an EP throughout this quarantine? Maynard's original lyrics for the spoken word section, which are what is used live are as follows. "You've left me no choice but to go inside and rebuild what's broken. Too much, too far, too late to lie down now. I must arm myself to fight you by making weapons out of my imperfections. It's all I have left. There's no other choice. I'm shameless, nameless, nothing, and no one now. But my soul must be iron, for my fear is naked. I'm naked and fearless. But I'm dead inside. You see.....shit adds up, now I'm dead inside." Thought you'd find the differences interesting.

On your point on confrontation, I disagree. There are two ways to approach conflict. One is to attempt to change your external environment - confronting the other at this point. The other is to attempt to change yourself, which subverts the need for confrontation by recognizing that it’s either unnecessary or ineffective and focuses on rebalancing your needs and desires with your reality, reducing the suffering that stems from that disparity. Both are viable approaches and each is suited to its context, which includes the people involved, their mentality and maturity, and a series of other considerations. You’re artificially locking yourself into limited options if you only seek to resolve problems via confrontation, whatever your intended outcome is.

My dog was in perfect health one day, and then the next day he wouldn't eat and seemed a little lethargic. I thought he just had a stomach bug or something. So I took him to the vet, they did blood work, and said his red cell count was very low, and he needed to be in a 24 hour urgent care facility in Levittown, PA. Apparently, his immune system was destroying his own red blood cells which carry iron to the brain. He received 3 blood transfusions over the course of 2 days as the transfusions were not taking. I laid in his cell with him for 3 hours one night. Then I went out and bought him a bed and some toys. I couldn't stand to see him lying on a cold hard floor. I'd had him since he was 8 weeks old and always spoiled him. The next day I got call from the vet while I was at work telling me "Codie has taken a turn for the worse. He has maybe an hour left to live." I left work immediately. Unfortunately, I got another phone call as I was pulling in the parking lot saying he had just passed. I was able to see him lifeless, but still warm with his arm wrapped around his little lamb stuffed animal. He was only 8 years old and the most affectionate dog I've ever had. I'm 39 years old, and never cried so much in my life. Then they hit me with a $7,000 bill. $300 for the cremation alone. I feel your pain. R.I.P.

I think it's about the power of the Dark Side, not necessarily in the simplistic Star Wars film sense where it is nearly synonymous with good/evil, but of the primal survival emotions. It’s not a power to go through life generally, but that needed to survive an otherwise deadly ordeal. And it’s not necessarily antithetical to The Grudge. Both have their place in context. As with most Maynard lyrics, there is an ambiguity in who the enemy is. It could be a terrible relationship or maybe an addiction. The words work in a variety of extreme conflicts. Then there’s always the personal with Maynard and the unspeakable abuse he ostensibly endured as a child. This is one of Tool’s most underrated songs. It starts with an epic riff and sound, both bass and guitar. It has Maynard’s voice at its best. Henry Rollins soliloquy adds to the dark mood. All of the emotion is so raw and powerful. It’s one of my faves.

I'd say from quick thinking you're parially right about forgiveness. I think it actually takes place in one's heart/soul whatever. You don't NEED confrontation or interactions with anyone. How else can we forgive someone from our past, or slights against us by strangers through out the day. There's a difference between just saying you forgive someone and actually forgiving them. A person that confronts someone might say they forgive them but later bring it back up. A cheating relationship is an example. Maybe they cheat again after years. If true forgiveness required a confrontation it would require another person. Which has its own problems. I think it's just one of those inner heart things that you either do or you dont. I will say the confrontation can be beneficial though in some cases. Especially relationships. Since communication is the thing that keeps it going. Airing grievances is a huge way to fix things. Lol hopefully that makes sense. I just got out of the shower.

I always wondered if it was a genuine personal growth or it was by design to help individuals seeking their own personal growth and the band was to be used as a "Tool". Starting out angry and full of angst progressing all the way to being in tune with feelings and emotions I'm sure lots of young angsty teens (myself included) were drawn by the darkness of Undertow and to a lesser extent (especially when you get to third eye) Aenima, once captivated in the creativity by the band they made their move towards uplifting personal growth with Lateralus, 10,000 days and Fear inoculum. Or of course it could be just what it looks like on the surface.

Say what you will about Justin Chancellor, but Paul D'amours bass tone was sick as fuck on this album, as well their EP Opiate. I appreciate what Chancellor has brought to the table since his inclusion in the band, but D'amours contributions can NOT be underappreciated or overlooked.
