Following Christ by Denying the Self and Taking Up the Cross Verse 24 says, “Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Here the Lord speaks about denying the self. To deny our self is to lose our soul-life, the natural life (v. 25; Luke 9:24). In verse 25 the Lord continues: “For whoever desires to save his soul-life shall lose it; but whoever loses his soul-life for My sake shall find it.” In verses 23 through 25, three things are related to one another: mind, himself, and soul-life. Our mind is the expression of our self, and our self is the embodiment of our soul-life. Our soul-life is embodied in and lived out by our self, and our self is expressed through our mind, our thought, our concept, our opinion. When we set our mind, not on the things of God, but on the things of men, our mind grasps the opportunity to act and express itself. This was what happened to Peter. Hence, the Lord’s following word indicated that he had to deny himself and not save his soul-life, but rather lose it. To lose the soul-life is the reality of denying the self. This is to take up the cross. Actually, in these verses four things are related: Satan, mind, self, and soul-life. This message is concerned mainly with these four things, which begin with the mind and [575] ultimately consummate with Satan. The mind is the expression of the self, and the self is the embodiment of the soul-life. The soul-life is lived out by the self, and the self is expressed through the mind. What the mind thinks or considers is an opinion, idea, or concept. The mind’s opinion, concept, or idea is the expression of the self, the embodiment of the soul-life. The soul-life is embodied in the self, just as the Father is embodied in the Son. The soul-life is like the Father, the self is like the Son, and the mind is like the Spirit. Thus, we have here a trinity of mind, self, and soul-life.

@@Papaspronator That is true if the support text stands alone in the assertion that most professed Christians aren’t actually legitimate, yes…but it seems to be valid when observed with the totality of the Bible’s warnings to remain sober and alert for: false doctrine, false converts, false teachers, false prophets. As well as the Bible’s commands to be sure we: (1) study to show ourselves _approved_ before God so that we are _unashamed_ at The Day of Judgement, (2) work out our own salvation _with fear & trembling_ , and (3) examine ourselves to see whether we are [ _actually_ ] in the faith. Grace and peace brother...I pray you get better. Secondly, I wanted to add that a believer or believing one, cannot lose salvation as he or she belongs to Christ. Philippians 4:7 states "and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Our hearts and minds are "guarded" through Christ by the peace of God. The Greek word "Guard" is the word "phroureó" (froo-reh'-o) which means a militant vigilance and means "to watch over, to keep, as by a military guard". It conveys the idea of guarding or protecting something with vigilance. It implies a sense of active and continuous watchfulness, often in a military or protective context. The term can also suggest the idea of being kept under guard or being held in custody. I recently retired from serving after 25 years and when we guard a resource, we are trained to give our life for it....up to including the use of deadly force to protect it. God is much, much greater and He is the one doing the guarding of our hearts....a believer can never turn away from Him. The same Greek word is used with regard to guarding our inheritance (1 Peter 1:4-5) and is a work of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit (1 Peter 1:2). Amen!

The confession is not “ _I’m just as bad as anyone else_ ,” the confession is “ _I’m just as guilty of being a sinner as anyone else_ .” That is not being pedantic; those are two different statements - and the latter is most biblical. Jesus Himself revealed that [ before God ] there are greater and lesser sins ( *John 19:11* ). The Word confirms this when it mentions Apostate Christians will be considered worse off in judgement than those who never became a believer ( *2 Peter 2:20* ). That communicates a former believer and an unbeliever are both guilty of sin, yes…but they will not have the same negative consequence (i.e. punishment) because apostasy is deemed a greater sin than refusing to admit one is a sinner. Therefore the scriptures attest that unbelief is not as bad as leaving the faith itself.

Please do not deny your new self in Christ. Being a Christian is plainly in the name - Christin - Christ in me “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Gospels are before the new covenant - - being born again, we become new creations, no longer sinners by nature. Christ is in us, united with us so why deny that new self? God knows who His Children are despite bouts of bad behavior. His Grace WILL teach us to say no to sin and live by faith. We are new natured with Jesus nature and sealed in there by Holy Spirit but we have a brain of flesh full of automatic programmed habits and behaviors that were created outside of faith.

That it NOT what the doctrine of eternal security teaches my dear. You are mischaracterizing it, mixing up genuine salvation revealed in scriptures with the works-based, man-made salvation that is so common. A genuine Christian, or a Christian I should say, will not and cannot live a loose, unbiblical lifestyle because it is God who is working out the salvation in that person, guaranteeing he will be kept till the end (1 Corinthians 1 v 8). The Holy spirit sanctifies him (2 Thessalonians 2 v 13), the Holy Spirit seals him until the day Christ returns ( Ephesians 4 v 30). Such a person cannot live in a sinful lifestyle. The people you are referring to don't have the Biblical salvation. They aren't genuinely saved. That's why apostle Paul says you should examine yourself to see if you belong to the faith (2 Corinthians 13 v5).

It can happen because he is not perfect and the sin nature is still there with the Holy Spirit.( Romans 7 v 14 to 25). That is why Paul, also instructs us not to grieve the Holy spirit who has sealed us until the day of redemption(Ephesians 4 v 30). This means that a saved person can fall to sin at times, but such person will be repentant , seeking forgiveness and restoration, He will not be out there living any and any how

@@christianmarshrosey1977 So you’re saying (1) a believer does still have ‘A’ _from_ The ‘HS,’ but through faith will choose to _use_ their ‘A’ to submit to The ‘HS’? Meaning they (2) willingly walk by The Spirit instead of The Flesh? Because (3) walking by the ‘F’ grieves the ‘S,’ but walking by the ‘S’ grieves the ‘F’? Meaning (4) we are only as dead to sin as we are living by The Spirit? So (5) the more we live by the ‘S,’ the more we die to the ‘F’?

To be a Christian, you have to be a member of the Church (Body of Christ) established by Christ in 33 AD.

We are to continue denying one’s self. It’s no long I that lives, but Christ that liveth in me. We take up our cross daily and follow Christ. We are in Christ, means we’re enveloped by Christ, self is hidden, others should only see Christ when looking at a child of God. A Christian may no longer be considered a Christian if they abandon or reject the core beliefs and practices that define Christianity. Some key indicators include: Denying the deity of Jesus Christ or His role as Savior. Rejecting the authority of Scripture as God's inspired Word. Abandoning faith in God's existence or the Trinity. Renouncing belief in salvation through grace and faith in Christ. Rejecting the resurrection of Jesus and its significance. Additionally, a persistent pattern of unrepentant sin and deliberate rejection of Christian moral teachings may indicate someone has departed from the faith.

The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch. If someone is a Christian a follower of Christ, that's same as a disciple of Christ a follower of Christ. Many claim to be christian but don't want to be a disciple, they just want to be a believer not a follower. Jesus said first count the cost, pick up your own cross and follow me, endure till the end, do the will of the father obedience is the will of the father. Why call me Lord Lord and not do the things I say.....whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the father and the son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine do not receive him into your house nor greet him, for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.....

The goats abide by man made religious rules depending on the denomination they align their beliefs with. Who proclaim themselves to be Christian and act holier than thou in church but as soon as it's over they look and act no different than the world. With no evidence of transformation in their character. These types say a simple prayer but have no intention of ever changing who they are to become who they need to be for Christ. Their heart is far from God and how they speak reflects their true character. Their mind is set on carnal worldly things and is not renewed in the Word. Their behavior outside church imitates those they surround themselves with. The truly born again sheep have fruits of the Holy Spirit manifested in their character. Who don't play religion by following man's religious rules but rather are submitted to God and wholeheartedly are willing to live obedient to His Word. Who are filled with the Holy Spirit and are being sanctified to imitate Jesus Christ so they can walk in the fear of the Lord. They don't try to look Christian. They simply are Christian because the Lord qualified them to be called Christian. These types turn from their wickedness by repenting. They know they are sinners who need Jesus to change them and are willing to deny themselves to walk with Christ and endure by faith.
