Ms. Mavronas is Great 🇬🇷👌🏻 The Greek "Mati" has been in Greece since Antiquity, and even predates all of us! The Ancient Greek Trireme Ships had an Eye on them to ward off bad luck & allow for calmer waters! The Mati is literally mentioned dozens of times in Ancient Greek Sources. Homie talking about Napoli, which was a Greek founded City called Neapoli. New = New 🇬🇷 Poli = City 🇬🇷 Just a FEW words & dishes that Italians use & were initially inspired through the Greeks: 👇🏻 Pizza-----Pikte-Pitta-Pissa Lasagna----Lasana Macaroni---Makarono [Makaronia] Pasta-----Pasto Stromboli---Stroggili Fagiolata----Fasolada Diamante Citron-Diamanti Kitron Azzimo-----Azymo [Bread] Casseruela---Katsarola/Kuathos Colluri (Sicily)--Koulouri ^^^^Of course, we don’t claim these dishes, but the OG origins in their most OG forms, must be said. Italian Cuisine has also inspired Greek Cuisine as well 👌🏻

I have many Italian friends and I can definitely see lots of cultural similarities especially with Southern Italians! By the way, the evil eye tradition doesn't come from Turks, it's the other way around basically! The whole theory about the evil eye, eye-distraction or the so called vaskania in Ancient Greek (βασκανία) comes from Ancient Greece! It comes from word φάσκω/βάσκω which means "to say" in modern Greek and it was referring to someone who slanders behind your back. This could also happen without any words being said, because the bad energy of the gaze can be emitted by someone, exclusively through his gaze, especially if he is blue-eyed. ;)

I wanted to correct a misconception. Greeks don't eat pita every day. It's for souvlaki and gyros sandwiches and in restaurants for dips. We eat bread that is very similar to the rest of Europe on a daily basis. And pizza is the Italian word for pita (I.e. flat bread). Finally, greeks eat more potatoes than italians but less rice and pasta.

Pita flat bread is relatively new and it's actually a street food only. Greeks rarely bake flat bread and would buy only at the beginning of easter lent (kathara deftera) as a tradition. Pita is actually the fyllo stuffed with a variety of ingredients (spanakopita, tiropita etc).

Remains of some of these Greek cities can be seen today, such as Neapolis ("New City", now Naples), Syrakousai (Syracuse), Akragas (Agrigento), Taras (Taranto), Rhegion (Reggio Calabria), and Kroton (Crotone). The most populous city of Magna Graecia was Sybaris (now Sibari) with an estimated population, from 600 BC to 510 BC, between 300,000 and 500,000.[1] The government of city-states was usually an aristocracy[5] and the cities were often at war with each other.[6] The Second Punic War put an end to the independence of the cities of Magna Graecia, which were annexed to the Roman Republic in 205 BC.[7] From the motherland Greece, art, literature and philosophy decisively influenced the life of the colonies. In Magna Graecia much impetus was given to culture, especially in some cities such as Taras (now Taranto).[5] Noteworthy was the South Italian ancient Greek pottery, fabricated in Magna Graecia largely during the 4th century BC. The settlers of Magna Graecia had great successes in the Ancient Olympic Games in their homeland. Crotone's athletes won 18 titles in 25 Olympics.[8] Although many of the Greek inhabitants of Magna Graecia were entirely Latinized during the Middle Ages,[9] pockets of Greek culture and language remained and have survived to the present day. One example is the Griko people in Calabria (Bovesia) and Salento (Grecìa Salentina), some of whom still maintain their Greek language (Griko language) and customs.[10] The Griko language is the last living trace of the Greek elements that once formed Magna Graecia.[11]

Here some of them: peperonata, ciambotta, melanzane sott'olio, zucchine sott'olio, peperoni arrostiti, caponata, peperoni ripieni, melanzane ripiene, riso al forno, arancini, polpettone, scaloppine al limone, scaloppine al vino bianco, saltimbocca alla romana, polpette, polpettone, brasato, cosciotte di pollo e patate al forno, agnello al forno, baccalà fritto o in mille altri modi, frittura di pesce, calamari ripieni, cozze ripiene, riso patate e cozze, polenta in mille modi dal nord al sud....And im not done yet;-)

Rome is a Greek colony. Without Greek influence Rome would not exist. 40% of Latin is Greek derived words. Greek is the original, Rome is the copy. First cookbook in the world is Greek. Greek cuisine is the healthiest in the world. Greek language is oldest continuously spoken language in the world 5,000 years and most scientific. 80% of the international scientific and medical terminology is Greek
@aleph1114
@aleph1114 3 ай бұрын
Few things you got wrong, pal: 1) Rome was not founded by Greeks. The Italian peninsula was inhabited before the Greeks made their colonies in Southern Italy (Magna Græcia). Some of the indigenous people of Italy were the Latins (the founders of Rome), Tyrrhenians, Falisci, Adriatic Veneti, Umbri, Balari, among others… In fact, Magna Græcia didn’t even extend to Rome, so your claim doesn’t hold. 2) Just because Greek and Latin languages share similar words, it doesn’t mean 40% of Latin comes from Greek. Greek and Latin are both Indoeuropean languages, and thus have similarities. 3) Rome did what the ancient Hellenes could just dream about. If anything, Rome is the enhanced version of Greece. Remember: Greece became subject of Rome, not viceversa. At the end, not even the kingdoms derived from the Macedonian Empire were able to stop Rome from conquering them. 4) The first recorded cookbook was found in Ancient Mesopotamian clay tablets from 1700 BC. Nothing to do with Greece. 5) The Coptic language is as old as, if not older than, the Greek language. You’re welcome, pal.

Bear in mind that quiet big part of todays Italy was called Magna Graecia during Roman times. Southern Italy and Sicily were populated predominantly by Greek speaking people. The coast of Southern France, Catalonia (Spain) as well. This explains the many similarities in the culture of those places and todays Greece. Modern Greeks are not direct descendants of the antient Hellenic population obviously, but the culture is heavily influenced by the antient past of these lands. Somehow all Mediterranean nations have a cultural heritage from the Hellenic era and this is what makes them absolutely unique in its own specific way, people are very relaxed and they do appreciate more simple and harmonious with nature life. Greece is amazing, stunning nature and warm people. I strongly recommend it as a vacation destination, Greeks are very good hosts.

The closest thing we have from Ancient Greeks is Modern Greeks... on the other hand, modern Italians with Ancient Romans, mmm not so much... the Romans where annihilated by the Germanic tribes and Southern Italians genetically, are closer to Greeks than Northern Italians. Many gaps in Italian school books unfortunately.

There is no beef gyro in the average Greek souvlatzidiko (gyros shop), and it is shaved pork or chicken small meat cuts, not that long ass slice kebab thing from minced/mashed lamb or beef. Also the Italian panino with mozzarella and prosciutto is ok at best compared to gyros which is more elaborate and not that dry. There are other panini like the one with mortadella, stracchino, and pistachio that is really good.

Athens is a huge area. There are the tourist parts, the rough places and the residential areas. The strange thing perhaps is that Athens' worst areas are very close to the tourist areas. That is why a person that would visit the center of Athens and the tourist areas might have this impression of Athens if they decide to go a bit further out the touristy area. But if indeed they had the time to trully explore Athens they would understand that Athens city is very big, each area has something different to offer, from mountains to beaches, to beautiful residential areas. But that needs time and perhaps more research.

South and central Calabria spoke greek , tle local Greco dialect, up until a few centuries ago. Do to catholic procecution and pressure, use gradually declined to the south. Now it is endangered and limited to a few villages outside Reggio.

As a 4th gen Japanese Canadian showing a love for my heritage gets zero support from my family. It’s all negative to indifference really sucks. I’ve studied Classics in Uni and think about applying to grad degrees in Greece. No idea how I’d get on over there love trying to speak the language. My hair is as dark, curly and thick as a Greek tho lol
