Welcome to my backyard in Utah. It looks like you had a great time. I've camped, fished and hunted at the exact camping spot you stayed in many times. The area is rattlesnake country, but they usually avoid humans and animals and only strike if they feel you're going to step on them or too close. Given how close the snake was to the trail when you first came upon it, you were wise to let move on. The reason the area is called diamond fork is the Western diamond back rattlesnakes that reside in the area around where the rivers / creeks fork and in the foothills above. I always wear hunting / high top hiking (snake) boots in that area.

@@ChristineMeachum I stand corrected, In looking closer at pictures of the snake you encountered, it is a "great basin" rattlesnake. Just as venomous as a Diamond back so you did the right thing.

Hi, sweet Christine! I'm a magnet for wildlife, especially snakes, especially venomous snakes. Snakes can feel the vibration on the ground and heat, so once they identify the vibration or heat is too big for them to eat, they try to get away. They try to save their venom for prey or treats. What a great video! Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay happy! Pops

@ChristineMeachum 😅🤣😂 OOPS!!!I type from my cellphone, and my keyboard is set up to write in multiple languages, so it changes the spelling, and because the screen is too small, I don't see the full text until after the fact, by then it's too late. I meant to say that snakes feel the vibration on the ground and the body heat, and they identify if you are a possible prey or a threat to them. They avoid wasting venom on anything that is not a prey/food or a threat. Pops

Your rattlesnake was a Great Basin Rattlesnake. Probably heard you coming and did its rattle thing, which is nice of them. With that much room, you can pass with no problem. It's more if the snake is coiled up right next to the path and you're within striking distance.

I live in NW New Mexico and periodically see both poisonous and non-poisonous snakes on the trails. Never once ran into a rattler that wanted to bother or be aggressive with you. I usually stomp my foot or bike tire Throw sand at them. Tell them to go on and hang out somewhere else. They just slither off. I do have to be careful on my dogs though. They'll see a lizard, chase it into the bushes and sometimes, there can be a snake in the shade. 1 got nipped on the nose. She got over it in about a week. I keep non-alchohol Benadryl around and give them a big dose of that if they get bit. Vet didn't do too much. Followed up with IV and an antibiotic. But the snakes we have out here are more than glad to be left alone AND to leave you alone.
