They are Ditty bags. When I was in Basic Training back in 1966-1969. We (Women's Army Corps trainees) each had to carry one of these Ditty bags (in Forest Green) to our classes (to hold our necessary items in). They also made great Shoe Shine Kits, Sewing/Repair Kits, and First Aid Kits. We bought ours at the PX. I'm glad to see them being made and offered again. Wonderful. Thank you.

Great boxy bag. Love these. Coco looks delightful. Thanks for sharing her a bit. Made a huge one of these few years back to hold our artificial Xmas tree. It’s 39” tall and the 4 sides total about 28-30”. Holds everything, has a long recycled luggage double pull zip, and a sturdy hanging loop. We love it. Edit: forgot to say …. I save all trimmings from zips and fold one side in half to use as the “tab”. Saves time and waste. People get a huge kick out of them when they finally notice what the tabs are made of. Fun.

A very thorough demonstration of a lined boxed bag. In order to speed up production I usually sew a lined flat bag with a centred zipper. Then cut out the corners and sew French seams to box the bag. The French seams are easy to sew and help the bag to keep the box shape. Sew the first line of each corner from the right side and then enclose the raw edges from the lining side, so that the bulk of the seam is on the inside. I also use grosgrain ribbon for the tabs, which reduces the sewing steps. I developed this method when sewing in the hoop based embroidered bags, where I add stitched guidelines for the boxed corners as part of the design. The French seams are completed out of the hoop.
@ChristinesHomeAffairs2 жыл бұрын
Great idea Helen. I usually use ribbon, bias strips etc as well. Whatever I have handy at the time 😀

Thank you Christine for sharing your ideas & skills. This little box bag is great. Is there a particular set of measurements for each size? ... 6.5" X 9.5".... cut out square 1.5" 8.5" X 10.5"... cut out square ???????
@ChristinesHomeAffairs2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jill, I don't have a particular set of measurements, as most of what I do is with remnants and scrap fabric. The cut outs for squares also vary depending on the size of the bags I make. The smaller the bag, the smaller my corners are. I've had anothe ask a similar question on this. I'm wondering if perhaps I should do a video on the varying sizes and corners. What do you think?😀
@jillsmith19412 жыл бұрын
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I think that would be sew helpful for those of us just starting on this amazing journey... My head is buzzing with how to use my scrap fabrics instead of another quilt with 300/ 3.5' squares... not that there's anything wrong with that.......LOL

Hello Christine, thanks for a great video and bag. However, I have made 2 following instructions, although I did use Vlieseline H640 as interfacing in both bags and also included an inner pocket. To be honest, I made the first using a 1/4” seam allowance which made the bag longer and approx 1/2” more shallow. An interesting exercise! My main concern is that the lining is too large inside both bags. It’s so disappointing as the outsides and fabrics are great (William Morris, Strawberry Thief). Any tips how to reduce this to fit snuggly? Would it require cutting the lining fabric smaller ? Many thanks, Michele
