I freeze homemade chicken broth in mason jars. I took an old sweat shirt and cut the sleeves off and cut the sleeves in half and I put the mason jar in the cut sleeve and put them in the freezer. That way if they nock together they will not break because they are protected. I seen this on u-tube years ago.

I use old socks also for this same reason with mason jars. Keep them intact and slip the jars inside. That way the bottom of the jar is covered also.

Thanks for the great advice as always. I bought the Beeswax wrappers but it didn’t work out well even though I wash them very carefully. I use glass bowls too and stainless steel straws. I recycle and help the planet wherever I go. ❤

Granny, I'm a little bit older than you but remember when you were growing up there was no plastic. 2 liter bottles of pop did not come out in plastic until 1978. After that the market became flooded with plastic. My memory is not too good as to remember what we used to use to store food in.

I am getting rid of all my plastic as we speak. I threw some out today put them. I put them in the recycle so if the City Of Houston wants to recycle them they can but I switched to Glass. I heard to get rid of the Teflon so I switched to cast-iron sometime back and stainless steel. Stainless steel is good and I’ve actually found a lot of good pieces of stainless steel at the thrift store.

So I do the same thing with the mason jars I put in my chicken broth I put in if I open up a can of tomato sauce. The rest goes in a small mason jar. I do can jelly preserves for my pear tree and so I have a lot of mason jars I was gifted a few a friend of mine does estate sales and she came across an estate where the old lady had tons and tons brand new in the box so she sold them to her for like nothing, and she came and gifted them to me and they return. I always give her some preserves that I can jars are awesome for a lot of things this year. I’ve learned to make my own coffee creamer and I got a recipe from a KZbinr and she said because the stuff that they sell at the store has all these weird stuff in your ingredients so why not be more pure and do your own coffee creamer so I’ve been doing that about Two months maybe and I use it and I do an amazing jar and I use one of those mason jar tops that have a little spout. You can buy them on Amazon shake it up every morning real good put it in my coffee and I’m telling you it is so so good. It uses a can of sweetened condensed milk and whatever other milk you wanna use if you want to use half-and-half if you want to use almond milkor even milk probably

I use my own bags for shopping. I carry several sizes in the car so they are always with me. I use parchment paper a lot for several things. We do a lot of canning so we always have canning jars on hand and I use them for many things besides canning like freezing soups and broths, sending drink in my sons lunch cooler for work. I also use hankies and cotton cloth pieces for toilet paper. For the toilet paper, I cut several pieces of cloth, keep them in a basket in the bathroom and hand wash them once a week. I wash them and then put them in the drier. It sure saves on having to buy toilet paper. I use old t-shirts, cotton pillow cases and any other cotton material things that would go in the rag bag.

Granny, I feel the same about the plastic pitcher holding the filtered water. I have city water, such a strong chlorine odor. I bought a faucet mounted Brita filter for my kitchen. Very reasonably priced and so easy to put on; just screw it on. I turn it's valve to "filter" then turn on the water to fill my glass pitcher. Then I turn it's valve back to standard flow to use the faucet for everyday use.

For covering dishes for the refrigerator have you seen the Ceybo Reusable Silicone Stretch Lids for Food Storage on Amazon? I like those. We have those stainless steel straws and I put the silicon tips on the bottom of the straw because I like using a wide mouth glass Mason jar and when using a straw, sans the silicon tip, over time it created a crack in the jar and one day I got wet 🙂 You can resharpen razor blades using a wet stone 🙂 Here in California, we have used cloth shopping bags for years, and because I like doing embroidery, I did different vegetables on one, different fruits on one, meats/fish on one, Miscellaneous on a few, so the bagger knows which items go into which bags. Also took two white cotton pillowcases that had developed wee holes and cut them into bulk bags for things like bulk nuts, grains, fruit, vegetables. All store deli's in our area encourage folks to bring their own clean glass Pyrex containers for items like salads, meat/fish, olives, cheeses. Have you ever tried the Tru Earth laundry sheets? Have been getting them on Amazon and I like that there is no waste. Even the cardboard they come in can go in the composter outside.

I bought some microfiber cloths at Walmart for clean ups. They were cheaper in the auto department than in the kitchen area for the same product. I use the metal straws as well and have some handkerchiefs. I just bought some more cloth napkins yesterday at an after holiday sale. We are really trying not to purchase paper products.

I remembered you said you have fibromyalgia. Just keep an eye on drinking out of stainless steel as it contains nickel which I was found to be allergic . Once I switched to glass my pain level dropped a lot .

Today I saw a thing about even using the plastic nylon Teflon cookware the utensils to get rid of them go with wood go with bamboo go with stainless stainless steel everything but not plastic nylon I don’t care if it’s pampers chef any of them if they’re plastic or nylon. They say they’re no good because they’re leaching out the plastic, cutting boards are out. We’re doing wood now nothing I love them.

Have you ever thought that you paid for all of the utensils, and now someone tells you to throw them away? First, they said that you need to get rid of them right away, about a week ago I read that of course that they are bad, but not that bad. As a result, someone wants you to throw away what you paid for, and buy more. Wood is not always great because it's like a sponge. Wondering what quality is the magical stainless steel. Not to mention that you will consume tiny amounts of metal. There is no magical product in this world.

@ true.. I have read that the new pots now are the Teflon is not supposed to be safer, but I don’t know you know anything that gets like it’s gonna peel off. Are usually trying to get rid of it. I did get rid of the cutting boards, but you know when you go to a restaurant , they’re using aluminum pans they’re using Teflon. They’re using plastic cutting boards so you have to think about that too because I had an ice cream shop for 20 years and I could go to the restaurant supply and the restaurant supply is big on selling the professional Teflon and Big on selling the aluminum pans and whether it’s a pan fry or a pan to bake, they still sell them till today cause I’m not too far from a restaurant Supply . so if they’re telling you to not use them at home but when you go out to eat, the restaurants are still using those products you makes you think well or what or you know I have thought myself, but I don’t know. I have been switching little by little. I don’t like the older pots that had them where the Teflon wears out and it goes kinda straight to the aluminum pan or I don’t know, but I am getting rid of them. I’m trying to go a little bit on the same list a little bit more, but I’m doing I don’t like that new ceramic. I heard that the ceramic , is it to just like a regular pan so I don’t know everybody’s like switch to the ceramic I like I actually like the cast iron myself

Make sure that a magnet will stick to the straws because if they don't they are not true stainless steel all the way through. Also the silicone tips may not healthy for you.

He does explain things much better and it is easier to understand. It's fascinating and scary at the same time. Granny (I don't know your first name), do you remember the fridgies they were called - containers our parents used to use to store left overs, butter etc in the fridge. I still have a few of them and still use them. I am thinking they were from the 1930's-40's.? So it is true, if you are careful with things, these glass stackable containers our parents had are still in service and it is getting on pretty close to 100 years. I have been phasing out any plastics for many years and carefully put soup in sealer jars in the freezer and have glass containers similar to yours that I have had for many decades. So, it can be done without a lot of fuss.

Does anyone know if using products made with beeswax is harmful to the bees? I have been using coconut oil as a lotion but I suddenly developed an allergy, so I need to find an alternative. I have to be extremely cautious of any chemicals on my skin because I handle small birds. I found some pretty easy recipes for beeswax lotion and I was thinking of trying them out, but I dont want to do anything that is harmful or cruel to the bee population. Its on my list of things to do in the new year. Happy New Year!!

diannthomas7849 are you asking if products that have beeswax in them are harmful to the bees? I cannot see what that would be the case since bees aren't attracted to the products because of the other ingredients like shea butter, coconut, aloe, olive oil, rice milk etc. We have bee hives and when we remove the frames when full of honey, we put in a new frame and the bees use it to make more was and honey, so there is no harm to the bees. Then the frames are put in a spinner and that extracts the honey and leaves the beeswax behind. So, no bees are harmed.

I will NEVER EVER use a metal straw. I had a friend whose toddler knocked out the roof of his mouth with one, and had to have surgery. I am absentminded when I use a straw, so I am sure I would have done the same thing, too. They are not safe. Use the big plastic reusable ones. Someone said Dollar Tree had them. Check the bigger DTs or keep checking all of them. Sooner or later, they should show up. DO NOT BUY METAL STRAWS FOR DRINKING. Use them for non human and non pet use!!
