It's just me and my mother this year. My father passed away in April and my sister never wants to spend time with us on Christmas. We decided not to decorate this year. But we picked one gift each that we wanted. My mum wanted a small radio and I picked a book. One wanted gift is so satisfying. We will also make a gigantic trifle for Chrismas and put our feet up on the day and share good memories about my dad, the year, and just chill. No family drama, no over eating, no spending we'll regret later. Just a good quiet day.

That’s the best way to spend the day. I don’t go to see family, and they don’t ask. They all know I like to be alone with Molly, or with my one true friend. We are going to spend the day with her and her two dogs. We are like one extended family. My kids know I love them, and we’ll be in touch during the day, but I’d rather be alone or with the one person who truly understands me.

Hi Nigel. You are dead right. It is about filtering out the consumerism etc. You can find the feeling of Christmas in simple things. I love listening to carols and old Christmas pop songs. Bing Crosby singing white Christmas. All the good old traditions we used to know. Simple board games instead of all the screens. I'm foraging for some spruce today to make some wreaths. Hi Nigel, I like your videos, and I agree society is much more commercial than it was when I was growing up in the 1970s. But while listening to your video on KZbin, part of the 2 trillion dollar Alphabet Group, I had to listen to 3 x pairs of adverts. I am sure the frequency of adverts has increased in the past 6 months. So how do you square that with your anti-consumerism stance? Philip, aged 51.

Christmas= buying things we don’t need with money we haven’t got. Totally despise the consumerism the adverts the pretentiousness of the TV. Christmas for me is a time of reflection and staying bloody warm.

I will be giving handmade gifts. I don't every year, but I try to when I can. I am also at a point in life where I don't need as much, so I shall be gifting things of mine that others have taken an interest in. Because I'm cheap? No, because I believe these things have more meaning to others.

As Archie Bunker once said, "The Christmas season is once again at our throats" 😅 Though actually, as you say, once you can filter out the pressure to buy buy buy, there is a goodness to the season. I do love all the lights and the music, and I have ambitions of making gingerbread this year. But the moment I love each year is when we're all standing in a darkened church with little candles in our hands singing "Silent Night" - I feel in that moment that we are each of us deeply loved children and that all is well, no matter what makes it appear otherwise sometimes.

Well Nigel I actually did shop wildly a couple of weeks ago. I have a pair of jeans 7 years old and a pair 3 years old. The first pair are not pretty anymore so I used gift certificates to buy a new pair that hopefully also will last 7 years. On my way home I went to the second hand shop. All items 50% off. I was lucky: got a pair of jeans never used and a jacket never used for the sum of about £ 8 - now I'm equipped for the next couple of years. I just love the way she follows you and if you are getting a little too far ahead how she runs towards you. I absolutely loved Christmas before my three sons grew up and moved on, all the fuss and excitement. It is different now and I have a wonderful caring family but it is rather a sad time for me as my husband is no longer here. I'm starting to see a change in my little section of society of moving away from the commercialism of Christmas and toward experiences, strengthening bonds and making memories, and of course celebrating Jesus.

I have one good friend. We understand each other, and completely eschew a commercial Christmas. We have made our list of things for a simple Christmas dinner, and most of it involves treats for the dogs. She has two and I have Molly. It will be a wonderful day, as it always is. I never got much at Christmas as a kid. My parents took me shopping and I showed them what I'd like but I was told it was too expensive. I'll get people small gifts or gift cards so they can treat themselves. All that stress and expense for one day? No thanks. Also give me sausages and mash for Christmas dinner 😊

Enjoyed this thoughtful video, thank you. It's poignant seeing how Molly has aged and is obviously in her final years, bless her. It comes to us all and Christmas reminds us how kindness and compassion should be our underpinning values. The debate on assisted dying has really brought this out - We've all got to go, at least let it be with dignity and without unnecessary suffering.

I have a fracture so it is very difficult for me to get out and go anywhere apart from to hospital appointments at the moment. I don't want to get too lonely at Christmas, but I also think in a way being able to avoid all the shops and the constant Christmas music might be quite peaceful. I'm looking forward to seeing my family and just being cosy and watching some nice films. I agree that it has become much too commercial and it's good if people can reject that and instead have a peaceful inexpensive Christmas that appeals to them. Once I am better, I'm looking forward to going on some nice frosty winter walks.

As usual Nigel a very thought provoking video,loved your music and seeing young Molly,i love colour so really liked your hat with the pom pom,as a knitter myself i was interested in the brim,it didn’t look like rib,on my screen ?I have many remember whens being in my 70’s but my Christmas tree one never leaves me,back in the day when milk and cream were in glass bottles the tinfoil tops were green and red ones for Christmas and we would wash then mould them over a lemon squeezer and make little bells,poke a hole in and string them on the tree,we put cotton wool balls on like snow and made paper chains…as i live in a very hot part of Australia i always wanted to have real snow on a tree 😂

I know what you mean about the brim. It’s a simple k1 p1, and I reduced the number of stitches because I like them snug. I think it’s just because the rest of the hat, which is stockinette stitch is stretching the brim to start with. It’s exceedingly warm. 😊 I remember as a kid making our decorations out of paper chains and having real candles on the tree.

I hate: the Commercialism; the TV adverts encouraging you to overindulge (and the ones after Christmas Day telling you to diet and go to the gym🙄); donation buckets being rattled under my nose - and especially those at the end of the shopping tils where I can’t escape!! This year was my year to ‘host’. However my brothers and sister made excuses as to why they wouldn’t be able to come. I was invited to theirs but I instead booked myself into a spa for a few days - so can’t wait!! I loved your musical interlude and the footage of Molly. That ‘dog’ she approached was a bit aloof… Molly only wanted to touch noses! Molly should have told it (in dog talk) that it did not look cool in that outfit the human owners had donned on it. 😂 Peace and love 💕

Christmas has traditionally been a time for feasting, drinking and enjoying oneself as an antidote to the darkness of winter - and it was that long before Christians co-opted it. It was a time of excess and playfulness right up until the Victorians and their lack of fun made it "worthy". Enjoy the dark, the cold, the music, the food, the smell of smoke, the wine and beer. Love the sounds and the lights - just ignore the commercialisation of it.

And this is why I find it so difficult to explain my religion, lack of it, perhaps it. I’m an agnostic, because I’m a cowardly atheist hedging his bets, but it all comes down to Paganism, because my get out of the Jehovah’s Witness trap is to explain that nature is the thing I worship. And it is…. Then my friend says I’m a lazy Buddhist……. I retreat into gin and tonic.

@@keithhealing1115 My friend, who calls himself a Buddhist from behind his stack of home brew and dubious green foliage, seems to want to put a label on everything. I’m actually an atheist, but use the excuse that I’m an agnostic to kind of soften that barrier when talking to someone devout. It makes it sound like I’m open to persuasion, when I’m actually too set in my ways to even change my brand of coffee.

Thank you. I recorded that one summer evening as Molly and I sat on the front of the boat. I’m ambushed on a regular basis by a Jehovah’s Witness. He forgets that he’s already had me. I explain to him that I am agnostic, but not an atheist, because I’m edging my bets. I tell him that nature is my religion, if I had to choose one. I suppose I’m nearer Pagan than anything, but my whole being won’t let me commit.

This year where possible I am gifting objects that I own , not because I am tired of them but because they are things that I have loved and mean something to me and feel it’s time to pass them on , not things of huge monetary value I might add , so I hope that they will be received in the spirit of which they are given . I feel privileged to have been born into an era where for most ordinary families had parents where every penny spent was a symbol of love and frugal sacrifice and gluttony and avarice were unknown in our happy grateful small world. I blame no one but myself. The season does have me buying more for myself. Even if I am shopping for others I am not sure what is the perfect gift so i'll be at the stores more often questioning the items, which exposes me to seeing items I know I will like. I also am my own problem in that if I like something, I'll buy more than one rather than just be happy with an item. I found USMC brown cotton scarfs for $1, so i bought 5 because they had 5, if they had 10 i'd likely have bought that. Same too with knives, pens, flashlights, etc.

I’m lucky to live in a small town that was hit hard by Dr Beeching’s rail closures in the 60s. Rather than give up, it pulled itself up by its bootstraps, and is now full of bars, cafes, artisan shops and quality butchers and bakers. Gifts are always available. Shop local. 👍

Thanks for this, I do enjoy the season but not all the crap and pressure that goes with it. Although I have noticed over the past several years, consistently, the media reporting retailers being disappointed with worse than expected sales figures at Christmas, maybe we have hit peak consumerism and everyone is fed up with it.

I find it Ironic that people eat too much, drink too much, spend too much and are inactive over Christmas. On 1st January, people then start resolutions to go on a diet , cut down on the booze, worry about paying the bills, and pledge to get fit.

The arm of your glasses poking into view, being of a similar hue, makes it look like you've snagged your knitting. 🙄 Talking of which... Molly was cautiously eyeing up that dog in its jumper, thinking...is it a turquoise tea cosy, or is it the ghost of Val Doonican rocking his latest sweater? 🤔 Molly was looking very sprightly in her younger years. But then, weren't we all! This recent cold snap has played merry havoc with my old arthritic joints. 😞 Don't know what to do about Christmas this year. I kind of knew in my heart that my old boy George wouldn't be here for another Christmas. It's been 8 weeks since I had to say goodbye, and I'm still struggling with the depths of grief. Not a day has gone by that I haven't sobbed my heart out. The slightest thing can set me off, and frequently does. 😢 My new dog Theo is a great comfort, and I love him to bits, although a heavy dose of guilt at getting him so soon is undoubtedly compounding the grief. So I'm torn between making a happy Christmas for Theo or allowing it to pass by uncelebrated for George. 💔

I have a few instruments, percussion mostly, but also cello, violin, kalimba, keyboards, that sort of thing. I record through a looper, which lets me multitrack as much as I want. I’ve had many drums over the years. The one with the boat is a Rav Vast Drum, and much of the other stuff I do is handpan. I have a long history of playing the pub circuit as a drummer. One of my best mates was Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks. We played in the same band before he went off to form them, and I continued playing rock stuff. We stayed mates for years until he moved abroad.

I have many reasons to dislike xmas.l do not bother with it at all and as l have no family it is easy to do so. The memories l have of this festival are not happy my father died one year on xmas day. I dislike how people tried to force me to enjoy myself. The pressure to spend and the worry of not being able too. Spending time with family l hardly saw all year. I have spent some lonely times at Xmas. It got better when l stopped buying into the idea of the close happy family round the table.The day itself doesn't bother me its the weeks of fuss before l hate. I spend December 25th the way l spend every day. It used to be just me and my dog but she died last July. I will miss her and our walks. Xmas has nothing to do with Jesus it's not his birthday and the vast majority have no belief or interest in him. That's fine by me but l wish they would keep their Xmas to themselves. Roll on January 6th when it will be all over!

And you have every right to feel like that. I haven’t spent Christmas with my family for many years. They know how I feel, and it doesn’t stop us loving each other. I love the day on my own. It’s like any other day, except I make a little more effort over dinner and make a little more fuss over Molly. I don’t buy presents or spend any more on food, so there’s no pressure there. I ‘feel’ the day without putting any effort in. Molly won’t be around much longer, and I’ve been hanging around, defying medical science, so I’m just going to enjoy my time with her, and everyone else can enjoy their over-indulgence. 😊 My dad died around Christmas, but it was almost half a century ago….. still miss him.
