I agree with you about hobbies. I knit for the foster children in my county. Now I am knitting pot scrubbers for my neighbors as Christmas presents. I enjoy cooking, reading, painting, and the list goes on. Coloring cards is fun, too. My hobbies, friends, and family have helped me so much this year since my son died. This channel and subscribers have also been a great comfort. Thanks to you all!!❤❤ I want to share this recipe with all my friends here… An easy bread recipe… 3 cups sifted self rising flour 1 3/4 cup vanilla yogurt Mix well. Bake at 375 F for 45 minutes. Simple and delicious. In the US, Thanksgiving day is Thursday! So thankful for this lovely channel and Nigel and Molly!!!

Right. I make my own bread. Have done for years. This recipe rings so many bells. I was searching through the cupboards today, and realised I’d run out of yeast, and don’t have enough strong flour for a loaf. I have vanilla yogurt that I bought on impulse this evening. @primalengland yes I've been to a crochet teacher before and there is another class I have heard about that I've been thinking of going to. However, in some ways I find it easier to learn by myself, I taught myself with you tube videos til I got stuck. Will try again though at some point. Weird thing with reading...I used to love reading and would read non stop, carrying a book and reading on the pavement kind of reading but now most books I struggle to finish. I just stop halfway through. I think I don't find the same escapism in them now I'm older (37 as opposed to teenage / early 20's when you think your life might be like that fairytale)

*sorry about how long this went on. You inspired me to take a look back at my life. 🤗😁 I am blessed to have grown up around family and friends that created things with their hands! And they made sure that I learned darn near all of it! 😂 Sewing, crochet, embroidery, knit, tat, quilting, gardening, cooking, baking, canning, a bit of carpentry, etc.. I read voraciously until my late 50s. Learned to make jewelry (southwestern style sterling), simple lapidary. Well, someone had to cab up the turquoise and agates! lol Have always been an artist. Watercolor, colored pencil, pencil and pen & ink. Trying paper collage now. 🤗 Starting to get some neuropathy in my hands now... but just found out I am to be a great grandma next year.... so will be crocheting this winter regardless of numbness! It all brings peace and joy. I hope to be creating up till the end! Thank you for your awesome perspective and the beautiful scenery! ❤🌍🌎🌏❤

I strongly believe that we need to be more mentally active in our later years than we did when we were younger. There are no downsides to hobbies and keeping active. It fends off mental deterioration and keeps our joints as subtle as they can be, after all the years of knocks and bangs. I think, like you say, it is passed down through the generations. We are lucky if we were raised in such an environment. ❤️

Good morning Nigel. I enjoyed our walk and talk on your beautiful day. I bought myself some crochet needles and yarn the other day. One winter years ago, when I was a teen, our TV quit. Mom and Dad couldn't replace it at that time. So one afternoon my sister and I sat down at the piano and wrote a song. My parents were so pleased and said that's what comes from no TV. All that was just to further prove your point . Turn off the TV, disconnect the internet and CREATE. Oh! Now that’s interesting. Perhaps you are right. Do we set unattainable goals, rather than just let life guide us? I just love listening to you Nigel, you are my Slow Life Personal Trainer by now... 😂 Here are my two cents about hobbies: they are so important because most "primary jobs" nowadays are so "virtual", standardized and disconnected from creativity and tangible outcomes that we get sick! Humans need to see and possibly touch or eat the product of their work - instead, most people go home exhausted after a long day without knowing what they achieved - if anything. I worked my whole life with my brain and you know what? I long to use my hands now, and the wisdom that comes with it. Peace & Love.

I've amassed many hobbies and interests over the years as I have an insatiable appetite for learning and a curious mind. So I tend to throw myself into something new, buy all the materials, learn everything about it, master it, then lose interest, and on I go to the next thing that catches my eye. I've done amateur dramatics, run a writers' circle, written poetry and short stories, art journaling, junk journaling, card making, rock painting, jewellery making... which I sold online, working with polymer clay, mixed media, painting, drawing, and I even enjoy the simple pleasure of colouring in adult colouring books. It's a lovely way to relax on a winter's evening. There's something quite meditative about colouring in mandalas. I watch very little TV, but do spend quite a lot of time on KZbin. I'm rarely just watching though, I have to be playing games and puzzles online whilst the video plays in the background.

Its interesting how these things come and go. Years ago, I had this burning passion to paint, and just couldn't get enough of it, was in awe of fine painters, spent hours in Galleries and went to art school. Whilst I still do it some, the flames have died down ; its funny how that happens, but no regrets.

Lots of new stitches. I'm now decorating a wooden bauble. I thought I'd do a peppa pig theme for my grandson. He loves peppa. You are right Nigel. If you have a creative mind it's so much better than watching tv. I also sit on a carrier bag on wet benches. Two minds think alike 😍

This channel never fails to inspire and re-inspire me! I recently took up neuroart, and it's so incredibly relaxing - pretty much all the chatter in my brain stops and I'm just in the present moment playing with the colors. If I make a so-called "mistake," it somehow becomes an impetus to turn it into something even more beautiful than it would have been without the mistake. I like to make "scrapghans," too - make a scarf or shawl or blanket out of miscellaneous yarn fragments. Sometimes they come out to something quite beautiful, all those scraps.

My husband wants to knit a hat like yours. Could you share a pattern with me. Or at least say what size needles and how many stitches you cast on so he can get started. How many rows do you knit before finishing the top. He likes the longer back. I’m excited to teach him to knit!!
@primalengland
@primalengland Ай бұрын
I have tried to teach myself how to read patterns, but now just do measurements and work it out from there. I’m sure I used super chunky oatmeal coloured wool. I used 10mm needles (US size 15). I measured around my head just above the ears, then used 85% for the pattern. I knitted it on straight needles, so basic stockinette stitch an even no of stitches. I threw in a row of purl stitches every so often just to make the little ridges. I think I knitted about 8 inches before I started decreasing. I decreased by about 4 stitches a row, then knitted a row, then decreased again. This was all guesswork because it was the first hat I ever made. I had only knitted swatches before this. The ribbed band is just a practice piece I had hanging around that I weaved on. I think I decreased until I had about 8 stitches, then pulled it together, and weaved the whole piece together into a hat. I made the Pom using the two pieces of card method. I know this might not make much sense, but I have made hundreds of hats, and never used a pattern. I just make it up as I go along. It’s difficult to remember, because I made this about 5 years ago, and have a terrible memory. 😊

I love my KnitPro symfonie needles. I get the extra long ones as I knit the old Scottish way with the right needle up high under me arm. I taught myself (with youtube) circular needles and found the Noweigen way the easiest. I knit my own socks too. I love the rhythm of knitting, it calms my brain lol the clicking brings back memories of watching my mum as a child. I started watercolors a few years back but recently discovered gouache paint, much easier. I love to read and have discovered poetry. I now make my own butter and bread. I am going to treat myself to a recorder or penny whistle for Christmas and teach myself to read music. With youtube ahd Skillshare online the skies the limit. I live alone but I'm not lonely and there arent enough hours in the day to do all the things and work gets in my way lol I work in the NHS and the quiet after a busy, noisy shift that's filled with my hobbies is lovely. My mum told me years ago that when i got married to get a shed for the hubby as the happiest men are those with a hobby 😊 (back then the women used to gather to knit, sew, play cards and dart practice without a shed): that said, I would love a shed filled with books and knitty goodness with a kettle and heater 😂

Wow, that's a serious sounding set of needles to lose! I'm a bugger for getting half-started with hobbies: painting, writing, microscopy, guitar and, more recently, the ukulele. I've been the archetypal "all the gear, no idea" mug. The only one I stuck with over many years is photography, but then I went digital and became a victim of the arms race between different manufacturers. As you'll know he technology reinvents itself every 12-18 months and my pocket couldn't keep up. I got rid of 90% of my kit and now have an old Olympus OM1 & 3 lenses and a Ricoh point & shoot digital ... although I take more shots with my phone than anything else😂. I do read a lot but find it tough going when the girls have the telly on - perhaps knitting would work for me as a solo contemplative pastime to be carried out in company. As ever, thanks for posting such a thought provoking video. I'll shut up now! 🙂

I too have always been a keen photographer. I fell victim to digital, and got an Olympus four thirds set up. I’ve had an old Praktica since I was in my 20s, and shot on film until a few years ago. I had a darkroom in the garden shed, B+W only. I now use a dji osmo pocket for vlogs, and a Canon m50 with a 50mm f1.8 lens for B roll. It’s a money eating hobby.
