The Sonic Xtreme dev team had actually tried to use NiGHTS's engine, but Yuji Naka threatened to leave Sega if they touched his stuff without permission. The fact that he's now been arrested twice does not surprise me.

I think it's worth mentioning that different region codes tend to require different memory editor codes (even if an EU version has no localization differences from a US version, not sure why), so the codes are specifically for the US version, judging by the (U) in the filename.

The so called level loop might just be the code forcing the stage to be initiated again, what would happen if the code is turned off in the stage, though, would it persist or would it do something unexpected~

That's what i thought too - would be interesting to see how the game wigs out if you change the code so it loads frozen bell after spring valley instead of gillwing, for example.

Based on what I know about older games, I think what the game is actually trying to do is load in a boss fight that isn't in the game. It's looking for the boss room, but because it's not there, the game loads you back in the beginning of stage again in order to avoid a crash.

alas no Christmas Selph, still better than Coal :p also the scrapped Unlock stuff really sounds like an in-game Advent Calendar with possibly a Sonic Team message they couldn't get ready also surprised they didn't make Mirror Mode a proper feature in later Nights games

If you want to play Christmas NiGHTS in Yabause without suffering hearing loss but you'd still like to hear those sweet tunes, consider unchecking "Enable higher quality sound" in the emulator's sound settings.

Also worth noting, Frozen Bell doesn't have to loop. Simply disable the cheat mid-level to load the boss at the end. The cheat is forcing it back into the level.

I'm glad you covered the Twin Seeds background from the magazine images! That's been on my mind since I was a kid when I realized there was no city level in the final game! The magazine I had only featured the screenshot at 5:37 with no level Frozen Bell level geometry present, so I spent the last few decades thinking it was a brand new level cut from the game. I can finally rest easy knowing that it was just a simple background swap.

My best guess for the unused present box images, maybe they were early/placeholder versions of the "Sonic into Dreams" and "Reala" choices for those early box formats? Where the Sonic Team logo unlocks the playable Sonic mode and the "Exit" was a placeholder for the "instant boot" function the Reala box serves in the final version.

I've never used Yabause, but I have had sound emulation issues in the DS emulator Desmume. If possible, you might want to tinker with the options menu.

The F grades come from the scoring being from a different level. The level scape changed, but the scoring is still loading the other level. I think bobsled is missing to prevent Action Replay piracy. They knew about that at this point.

Interesting as always, I know the main NiGHTS datamine is coming from the PC port of the PS2 remaster, but with your discussion of the Sonic into Dreams stuff- can we datamine the Saturn games now? Oh, and do those codes work on an actual Action Replay on real hardware? Also one tiny thing I noticed with the original Saturn version of Christmas NiGHTS is that the Dreamy "fly along a surface and mash the triggers" exploit is actually patched. But in the PS2 version you can do that in all stages, so instead of building on the slightly more polished and patched version of the game used for the remaster, they used the original NiD and then ported the Christmas stuff backwards into it.

I've never experienced any sound issues with Christmas NiGHTS...? Weird. I've played or on YabaSanshiro (fork of Yabause), Beetle Saturn (on RetroArch), and Kronos (fork of YabaSanshiro), so maybe it's specific to Yabause? Anyways, you don't need to mount your iso or bin/cue ROM, any Saturn emulators will just load the file as is. All that being said I hope this comment doesn't sound negative or judgmental, I appreciate your videos **SO MUCH** and I get pumped every time you upload. I'm a hardcore Sonic Team and SEGA geek, so I'd be playing NiGHTS either way, but if not for your videos I'd have no idea that they're my nonbinary, anxiety and depression fighting hero 🤩
