In several respects, Christophe Rousset gives a well-balanced performance of Bach's French Suites. He finds a balance between a straightforward, technical reading and a more expressive one that takes liberties with timing and ornamentation. He brings out themes with a lyric sensibility, and he acknowledges the importance of countermelodies and the interaction of musical lines. The Sarabande of the Suite No. 6 is full of ornamentation, yet Rousset can still bring out a melody with a sense of forward direction that isn't interrupted by the ornaments. The Gigue of the Suite No. 5 is technically brilliant and musically delightful as all of the various parts come together in a lively manner. The instrument is a restored eighteenth century one with a sound that is not harshly brassy, but it is also not so delicate that livelier movements become wilted versions of what they should be. It has a resonance that helps Rousset make melodies sing. The sound of the recording adds to the quality of the performance. It is close, rich, and loud enough that the volume does not have to be way up in order for the instrument to be heard clearly.

I was a little puzzled by the use of a prelude from the WTC for this suite, but I imagine Bach wouldn't have been bothered by someone using it in this context. The suite as published (none of Bach's manuscripts for the so-called "French" suites are extant) does not include a prelude (none of these suites do) but no harm in inserting it here. As I say, I doubt if Bach would have been offended by that. The performance is brilliant and sensitive, as are all performances by Rousset. And he always chooses a superb instrument for his work. Bravo!

As I mention, none of the manuscripts for the "French" Suites are extant, so an editor undoubtedly inserted that prelude when he made his own copy or edition. But composers, editors, and performers were not all that "high church" about authenticity prior to the 20th century. With Bach I prefer to stick to the Bach Society edition, but adding, subtracting, re-arranging movements is fine, provided the music is not injured in the process. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Actually, the Gerber manuscript, one of three sources for French Suites 5 and 6, and a very authoritative source for the English Suites, has this Prelude as the first movement of the suite. The Neue Bach Ausgabe reproduces it as an addendum to its edition of the French Suites.

I think you have one of the prelude from the Well Tempered Clavier Book I before the actual prelude of the French Suite. I also play this myself as a hobby.

Rousset is one of the few harpsichordists I've heard who makes liberal use of 'over-holding' when playing Bach.
