I've heard that it's actually a holiday that Italians pay special attention to. Is that really true? i feel like you could pick almost any other famous Italian historical figure to celebrate besides him (maybe besides Mussolini) and it'd be a better choice.

Well, its been more than 400 years since Columbus lost his way and landed in America.. He was looking for India of course.. If he was a smart explorer, he could have named the native americans anything else but 'Indians'... The question is why can't US education system correct his mistakes by teaching the appropriate naming conventions in the school level.. ?? Wouldn't that make things easier for everyone ?
@RmcBlueSky6 жыл бұрын
ritishp ... bc the name "America" is from another Italian name Amerigo Vespucci. He was another explorer that realized that Columbus didn't find the west Indies but a new land mass.. FYI. Amerigo didn't named it, it was another person that branded this land by Amerigo's logs. Since all continents have a female name, this guy used the feminine version of Amerigo.

You can't judge historic figures by modern standards.
@TheDirtysouthfan6 жыл бұрын
That argument comes up a lot but it’s also irrelevant because even by the standards of his time he was considered evil and horrible. You see the Priest who accompanied him was disgusted by what he and his explorers did. When they returned to Spain he reported him and he was put on trial. Even the people in his expedition admitted he did some nasty shit and he was sent to prison. He disgusted Queen “Make Spain great again” Isabella who had recently purged Iberia of Muslims. This is why America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, the guy who mapped the coastline of the Americas, rather than Columbus.
@TheDirtysouthfan6 жыл бұрын
To add on, for this reason he became forgotten in Spanish and American history in general for awhile, he wasn’t celebrated nor venerated in any degree. It wasn’t until there was a large Italian population in America that he became celebrated because they needed an Italian American to celebrate.

If you cause a genocide and expect people over time will excuse you them good man you need help To be fair Up to a certain point you can't. Columbus didn't mistake the New World for India. First, India wasn't called that in his time, it was called Hindustan. Second, the word "Indian" in the new world comes from the Spanish word "indígeno" meaning indigenous, whch is a correct term, one which we use today. The term indigeno was shortened to Indio and translated to English as Indian. Columbus never mistook American Indians for East Indians.
@shivani45466 жыл бұрын
Here's a quick history and etymology lesson for you..The only way to enter India was to cross "Sindhu" river which was a local name and the region was called Sindh..Persian language didn't have "S" sound so they pronounced it "Hind" and the land as "Hindustan"...Greeks dropped the H and it became "Ind-" so the "West" called the river "Indus", the land "India", and the people "Indian". This was back in 4th century BCE. Now your homework is to find out about trade routes from Europe to India at that time and why Europeans like Columbus were looking for an alternative route. Don't open your mouth on this subject until you finish your homework. Fun fact- Columbus was not trying to prove that the earth was round. It was common knowledge among educated people at his time.

foremost Columbus was an explorer who took a huge chance by sailing west to find india and prove that the world was round. he had to pull a lot of strings and get backing from the spanish monarchy to bankroll his expedition. people of the time warned him the world was flat and his ships would simply fall off the edge if he sailed west. so he sailed west and ran into what he thought was india . He brought back some of the "indians" to europe as proof of his costly expedition. he is to be admired for that.
@bobbobbity35956 жыл бұрын
I learned this in school too, but the "people thought the world was flat and Columbus set to prove them wrong" is a myth. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth_of_the_flat_Earth#Irving's_biography_of_Columbus

desiguy55 you are a moron, stop listening to your elementary school education. He did NOT set out to “prove” the world was round, most of the educated knew that already. If you did 5 minutes of research you would know this
@desiguy554 жыл бұрын
you are the moron and many common folk were like you back then they firmly believed in the flat earth. columbus was not proving the earth to the educated but to morons of that time.
