Matthew McConaughey wrote in his memoir "Greenlights" that he was naked, high and playing the bongos in Austin in 1999 before being arrested by the Austin police. What led him to do this was his then philosophy of life, his "Austin Bongo philosophy".

But unwittingly comes off unintelligent. The entire concept of tolerance is the idea that there will be ideas that we don't agree with and therefore cannot accept, and yet we must agree that we will not hate the people who hold those ideas. It is foolish to even think to ask people to accept things they don't believe in.
@zombieedrea9 жыл бұрын
I know soooooooo many people who say things like this. And they mean well, they really do. They just...don't exactly get it, and they tend to end up sounding REALLY ignorant and just plain dumb. Also, "when were you first exposed to the gay community" wtf why would a magazine GEARED TOWARDS THE LGBT COMMUNITY phrase it like that? Who conducted that freaking interview.
@avedic9 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I think _most_ people are moral & well-meaning...but most people don't actually think through their ethical stance on things, so they inevitably end up saying or doing or believing some pretty absurd things, albeit unintentionally. Btw....you're _very_ pretty. I seriously never just say that to girls I don't know...I don't mean to weird you out; but you're just too _gorgeous_. So my type...sexy, smart, & aware. :)
@zombieedrea9 жыл бұрын
avedic WOW. um, thank you. that's very sweet of you! :) don't worry, you're not weirding me out, just caught me off guard a little. lol
@Nuisance_Bear7 жыл бұрын
avedic or in the case of guys like me, Who are self-aware enough to know that they're going to say the wrong thing, but also not aware enough to know what the right thing is to say, we tend to just shut up and go home. XD
@austenhead53033 жыл бұрын
@@avedic Maybe you didn't weird her out, or she's too polite to say if you did, but I'm gonna say it: that was a bit much, dude. Since we're on the subject of being woke and all, it's not cool to tell random women you don't know how gorgeous and "your type" they are. A subject is being discussed - don't interrupt it to objectify and/or sexualize the speaker. And yeah, I know you didn't mean anything bad - that's why I'm even bothering to say this, you might actually think about it.
@austenhead53033 жыл бұрын
About "exposed to" it doesn't really have the negative connotations that Hari seems to think it does. People talk about their first exposure to art, to Bob Dylan, to fine french cuisine, to manga... it just means when did you first experience something/become acquainted with it. And it makes sense to phrase it that way for the time that Matthew McC. was growing up in, because only two or three decades ago, gay was still something rare and mysterious that maybe existed somewhere else. You certainly didn't KNOW any gay people yourself. Even Elton John married a woman in the 80s. Freddy Mercury played straight. Things were very different, and we really did need to "discover" gay people through exposure. We didn't just grow up with them being a regular, unremarkable part of life. They were hidden and mysterious. And I'm only 41, but I remember this world. So "exposure" is right. I think it's important, in order to be taken seriously by a majority of people and not just "the choir", to not be OVERsensitive, and unfortunately, I think that Hari is. There was nothing wrong with that question.

I don't get why you had to tear his interview apart. And it was kind of self contradictory, since his answers were so bad it didn't really seem like someone else wrote it for him... Unless they did and he just chose someone as dumb as him. I mean even though he isn't pronouncing his views in the most proper way, his intentions are clearly a lot more progressive than any southerner I've met. And it's probably a lot harder for him to see from another's point if view. I mean referring to someone as, "the gay guy, the fat chick..." May be the worst way to refer to someone, but he's trying to appeal to the common stereotype, which makes it easier than, "the nerd kid, not the one who is athletic, but the one that gets picked on because he likes video games" or whatever. My general feeling is that you can't fault him for being dumb.. Although you could probably fault his manager for not prepping him better. Before you reply with the classic, it's a joke dood. I just want to say, when you're mocking a guy in public, it's a little more than just a joke. Congrats on being on letterman, good show and message on being intolerant!
@KimmimaruSai9 жыл бұрын
He's just showing that his "progressive view" isn't really progressive. It's him trying to sound progressive and failing miserably.
@kickhuggy9 жыл бұрын
Of all the things he could choose to support, why this? He's already rich and famous and has everything he needs... so what is the benefit he gets from pretending to support this? I imagine if this was something he was doing just to improve his image, he would have most likely gotten someone to write him a speech and he would have just spit that back out verbatim... he has that money, not only that, but he has people making that decision for him.... I've actually met people like him in real life, people that were raised in a fairly well off home and have no idea about anything outside of America or wealth... that have opinions on how black people/Mexicans should respond to poverty/immigration laws. Some of them are actually willing to listen and "realise the error of their ways." I wouldn't say they are bad/evil, just misinformed I guess. Idk.
@WHOOPtheresheIs9 жыл бұрын
Yo Spider, you don't get a free pass for "not being a TOTALLY bigoted straight white dude". Do better.
@kickhuggy9 жыл бұрын
KimmimaruSai Ah yes, as shown by your inability to read a short message, you've shown me you are the truly open-minded one and I'm the ignorant one. The moral of the comment wasn't well summarised by WHOOPtheresheIs because Hari did summarise everything Matthew M. is doing to help... tell me what the last thing you guys did in an attempt to help others? What's that? You protested this one time at that one thing because you had nothing better to do? It's easy to criticise the driver from the passenger seat, innit? Also, my comments are not based around fandom of a celebrity, it's just not hard to see that he's well received by the general population and wouldn't need a gimmick.
@pilsung269 жыл бұрын
Here's me replying with "It's just a joke dude.", while agreeing 100%, LIKING your comment, and posting an unnecessary defense of Hari. I came away from this thinking McConaughey's a dude who expressed kind intentions in a ham-fisted way. I suspect Hari is comfortable riffing on McConaughey; because he knows his target audience (aka folks like you).

This comedian is very funny in a Joan Rivers/Kathy Griffin mean pokes on celebrities kind of way. Not the highest form of comedy and, I believe in this case, not on point. As a gay man, I found nothing Matthew McConaughey said to be ignorant or particularly awkward in that interview. Certainly, nothing he said was bigoted. Having seen his interviews before, I don't think he was repeating PR lines, he really speaks like that. Funny, but didn't change my opinion on the actor.

comparing Matthew McConaughey to an intellectually disabled man who inadvertantly harmed or killed those he attempted to help and who was ultimately murdered to "spare" him from the legal ramidications of his actions is not funny, it just perpetuates the disability as scary stereotype or suggests that the actions of disabled people are rightfully mockable. Not so much a Steinbeck joke as showing the enduring quality of ignorance.
