To my eyes, it’s an exact counterfeit of the Czapek Antarctique Passage de Drake. So nothing to be happy and excited about.
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Жыл бұрын
Hi Steven, Adrian Buchmann was head of design at Christopher Ward for eight years and was part of the team that designed the twelve. Adrian is also credited directly by Czapek as a key contributor to the design of the antartique. In parallel with his work at CW he also started a design studio called Fuzion, which is a company that Czapek partnered with to create the antartique - specifically the dial is what they had a hand in, as I understand it. So to the extent that Genta made a counterfeit copy of the royal oak when he designed the ingenieur, then I suppose you could say Adrian copied himself when he used his design style on two different watches that he both worked on. After all - most of Picassos paintings all look like Picasso paintings.... Cheers 😀

I totally get it. Especially when there is such a price disparity. At the top end you are paying for some level of design-exclusivity and then the designer goes out and makes a budget version of his design.

Thanks for the feedback. It's HUGELY appreciated. For the most part I try to review based on watches that I have had in hand - bought, borrowed or tried at an AD. No such luck with CW that has no Brick and Mortar store. When I don't have a watch it in hand I try my best to avoid speaking too in depth about wearing experience / sizing etc. because something just happens when you put something on compared to seeing it online. In stead I try to stick to the things that I can say with reasonable confidence based on the material available. Thanks a ton for watching and contributing! See you around again I hope 😀👍👍👍

I'll admit it. I'm not a "watch guy". Just a casual admirer. I wanted a nice integrated bracelet watch that wasn't massive on my wrist and I really like those I saw at the $15,000+ range but there was no way I could justify buying something like that. The CW Twelve is a gorgeous watch. It brings some luxury to people who want to spend less and I don't see anything wrong with that. The fact that it is so heavily compared to more expensive watches says a lot of about the case quality in my eyes.

Hello Mike. I am a regular viewer of your content and like your no-nonsense approach to critiquing watches. This video was in the same vein and I very much appreciate it. CW has been on my radar for some time now but I just haven't pulled the trigger. It's just because if I find even one thing missing, or one thing I don't like in a watch, I don't go for it. My watch has to be perfect. In the case of the Twelve, it would have been an instant buy for me if the case was made of grade 5 titanium instead of grade 2. It might have pushed costs up, but high enough to discourage potential buyers (?)...I am not sure of that. A humble suggestion to CW, if they read comments on their releases, is to launch the Twelve in a Grade 5 case (they can keep the grade 2 for the bracelet to keep down the cost, like they did with the Bel-canto). This would ensure the longevity of the polished surfaces of the case. And a Glacier Blue option in this would be amazing...it's my favorite color by far😊. Thanks for the content, keep it coming 👍👌
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Жыл бұрын
Thanks a ton. Glad you like my content and keep coming back for more. A thought about grade 5 vs grade 2. Grade 5 is harder and corrodes less easily. In manufacturing it's for more industrial grade applications. Grade 2 is used in doors linings on cars to stiffen the door. Grade 5 is used as a bone implant (we don't want something rusting in our bodies 😂). In watches you'll see a seamaster 300m (the bond) in grade 2 but a planet ocean in grade 5. Overall the grade in itself is more expensive but it's mainly down to the tooling and machining expenses to work on this tougher material. On the other hand grade 2 is more malleable so you can twist it and get more curves that you can't with 5. There's also a small colour shift between the two alloys. Long story short - Grade 5 isn't necessarily better. For the specific use case it might be preferable (deep diving, ultra hard wearing). I wouldn't see it as a must have in a watch that wasn't a full on dive watch like the CW (and it's still going to be harder than steel). Just a thought... 😀😀

One thing I can’t quite figure out for a watch like this is sizing when the 40 and 36mm exist. I have a 7” wrist which can typically wear smaller or larger watches and my personal preference for retro style watches is for them to run smaller while the more modern a little larger. This looks more modern overall but has elements that pay homage to more classic watches I would want to run a little smaller… and with how busy it is it might be downplayed/more subtle appearing on a smaller watch… the joys of speculating about a watch you can’t get your hands on in person are certainly noted and I think I’m convincing myself to get a 36 😂. Also love your very even handed and logical approach /opinions on this channel. Keep it up!

Hi, this watch review and analysis is probably done like some of the best reviews I've seen by some of my favourite watch journalists. I am happy to share a lot of your thoughts, but am also quite educated with some of your other points. It is so true that many watches will share features of a winning design, but that is because the watches that doesn't have these winning features, most of us will not even take a second look at. Look at the Tissot PRX, it is so loved that it is now within the top 20 watch companies in 2022, and you can't deny it is love of integrated bracelets by everyone that helped them achieve this, so there is wisdom in companies learning from winning formulae. I own a CW C60 GMT Anthropocene and I feel it is as well made as my Rolex & Tudor, am a big fan long before the Bel Canto. Thank you again for this great video, hope you do more like it!

I bought one of these the day it launched but returned it because, like most integrated bracelets, it lacked on-the-fly microadjust. But CW fixed this when they launched the skeletonized Twelve X in titanium exactly a year later. The integrated bracelet for the Twelve X has a clever pair of snap-out extensions built in. GOOD NEWS however. I just ordered a Twelve Titanium watch on a rubber strap and added a separate Twelve X titanium bracelet with microadjust (at the same price as the Ti bracelet with no microadjust). Viola --an upgraded CW Twelve!

I don’t understand for integrated bracelet, why watch makers put chamfer on the outer side of bracelet instead of on the inner side which touches skin. Only few makers put chamfer to the skin-touching side to make watch wear more comfortable.
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Жыл бұрын
Really good question. My guess? Cost. Those extra chamfers, rounded edges etc all add to material costs and tooling costs and whatever is going on on the underside of the watch doesn't get that much attention in press etc.. Slab sided cases have the same issue sometimes. So they save money, cut a corner here or there and the watch still looks good on the wrist and in photos. See you around (in the comments) 😀👍
@kingcold7138 Жыл бұрын
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatchThat is really true. The chamfer on out side of bracelet will follow chamfer profile on the case edge. If luxury brands don’t do inner side, the small brands will have no reason to spend extra to do it. I have only seen Monta and Straum adding chamfer to the skin-touching side of bracelet.

Trying to decide between the 12. titanium and the Zenith Defy Skyline. I like this dial better but I think the bracelet is better on the Zenith. Thoughts?
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch9 ай бұрын
Good question. TBH - The Zenith is better technically in so many ways. The finishing is a notch up, the dial and most definitely the movement. Is it as much better as the price is higher? Not at all. The skyline, I prefer in 36mm. The left side seconds dial is not my cup of tea. Personally I would (and have) gone for the CW, but you have to decide for yourself...

It grows my viewer base Thanks a ton for helping out 😀😀😀😀 And no. I don't shave my eyebrows. I'm just balding everywhere 😂😂😂

people only use "for the money" when describing value at the lower end. lol i find it hilarious because if you apply "for the money" to Rolex, u would actually see the opposite effect. Diminishing returns get ridiculous at that point and you really are just ripping yourself off at the sake of brand name.
@Megatraum504 Жыл бұрын
this is arguably far more intricate of a case design than every copy paste case from Rolex. Sure you aren't getting a hand finished, in-house movement but at least you can have a gander at it lmao
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Жыл бұрын
That's a really good point. Rolex (and other brands) definitely operate in a price range where the markup in MSRP because of brand recognition + marketing budget can be exhorbitant and undercut the "for the price argument". That, and like you said, diminishing returns - I always think of speakers. Most people can hear the difference between a $200 set of speakers and a $2000 set. But most people are hard pressed to hear the difference at $20.000,- or $200.000. Rolex is also a lot lazier in terms of visual innovation. It's refinement which all things equal is cheaper to do. Having said that - At least Rolex for the most part holds it's value. Great thoughts on your part and thanks for sharing 😀😀👍👍

Not wild about integrated bracelet watches, but the CW is a good-looking watch. The case back on that A. Lange Sohne is beautiful.

A lange 1 or Zeitwerk would be my grail watch for the movement finishing alone....😀😀😁

You compare a Royal Oak with a Rolex sub? 😂😂😂
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Жыл бұрын
This time the comparison was more the Sub and RO vs the CW, but yes - I happily compare watches at vastly different price points if it illustrates a point or provides perspective. Check out my video on the AP Code 11.59. I compare it to a Hamilton Khaki Navy. I'm kooky that way 😂😂😂 Thanks a ton for taking the time to comment. 👍

Twice as much as a PRX. Still not worth the premium over the Tissot.
@cantbreakdance2849 Жыл бұрын
I have both. Twelve takes a massive dump on a PRX in terms of finishing and modern looks. Like it's not even close.. It's a whole other category. Putting them in the same bracket is not fair.
@danryan4137 Жыл бұрын
@@cantbreakdance2849 Maybe your right,would have to feel them both in the flesh side by side. I have a PRX And am happy for what it is and the price.
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Жыл бұрын
The PRX is also a very cool watch. For me it's a bit like wines. Somebody will tell me a $300,- bottle is the best wine in the world, but there's something fun and engaging about finding that $20,- bottle that does 80-85% of what the expensive wine does at less than 10% of the price. The CW is finishing wise better than the PRX but they are both solid, dependable and good looking - The one you like from there is the one you like... Thanks for sharing 😀😀

Looks like a cheap Czapek
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Жыл бұрын
Excellently spotted. 👍👍👍 This is among other things likely down to the fact that Adrian Buchmann who was head of design at CW for eight years is also one of the key designers behind the Czapek Antartique. The studio behind the Czapek is a company called Fuzion based out of the UK. Adrian owns that studio (founded in 2018 while he was still at CW) and William Brackfield who was also at CW is now at fuzion as well. So. Same guy(s) likely designed both watches 😀

No matter how good the watch is, I get turned off by micro brands named after a person, especially with an English name and no heritage. Unless it's a well respected independent watchmaker like FP Journe or Philippe Dufour, I really despise these brands. Dr Chris Ward is also the name of my general practitioner. Perhaps it may be a good idea to have my GP's phone number and my blood type inscribed on the caseback just in case I have a medical incident; actually hold that thought, it may be a good idea for a 'doctor's watch'. Other cringe worthy brands I wouldn't buy are Daniel Wellington and Dan Henry. I don't get why you would want someone's name on a mass produced homage watch. They are an embarrassment in my opinion. Roger Smith or George Daniels are the only English names I want to see on my dial.

Fair point! and lol... Don't get me started on Daniel Wellington.. Was kind of hoping they were dead by now.. 😃
