I'm currently in Italy with the 173rd Airborne as a civilian (wife is a parachute rigger) and i'm prior infantry. Aside from being wary of locals who like to try and scam new soldiers it's a wonderful duty station. Weather is always nice & the opportunity to travel is more lax than in most oversea's units. But Chris is right, pretty hard to get over here on your first run unless you're a jump school stud or something like that.

Ft. Lewis was an awesome duty station. Next to Tacoma and 40 miles south of Seattle, there are lots to do outside of the post. The weather is obviously the bummer as it rains 9 months out of the year, but the summers (July-Sept.) are beautiful. Hiking, fishing, skiing are all available depending on the season and a short distance away.

My first duty station was Torii Station, Okinawa (Army Security Agency) from 1971-73. It is now home of the 10th Army Support Group. We sometimes called it "Sunny Sobe by the Sea". As the nearest village was called Sobe. My barracks was only a 10 minute walk to the beach. It's a small post, but nice.

Christopher I joined the Army in June 1972 and my first duty station was Japan, my orders read Vietnam but there was a code at the bottom that sent me to Japan. While there I briefly worked in Yokohama at the Army’s Base Post Office then moved to Camp Zama and after reenlisting I was sent to Hardy Barracks where the Pacific Stars and Stripes newspaper is printed. I enjoyed it very much but I think today it would be too crowded to really enjoy.

One thing you have to take into account with duty stations is minimum time assigned at each. There are various lengths of time you have to spend in a location depending on the cost of sending you there and other factors. My information was based on the situations in the 90s, but for instance, your first tour in Germany was 2 years. Each tour in Germany after was 3 years. Korea used to be a 12 month unaccompanied hardship tour. Hawaii and Alaska were both considered overseas tours, and they were 4 years minimum on station (as far as I recall.) A lot of people put Hawaii on their dream sheet and the drill sergeant told them not to waste their time because they were enlisted for 3 years. (Hawaii was also considered a bad pcs in the 90s because max COLA was not enough for living in Hawaii.) Also, one thing that people don't know is if you are coming up on pcs and you don't have enough time left on your contract to go to another location, they keep you where you are unless you reenlist or extend. In our case, 70 people went to Germany from my OSUT. We spent four months in training so most of us had 32 left. After 24 months in Germany, you only had 8 months left so everyone who didn't reenlist or extend stayed in Germany an extra 8 months. If you've had enough of Germany, you have to give the Army more time to get out of there. Some did.

Italy was great...but I had too reenlist too get there from my first duty station of Ft. Bragg. If you're Airborne infantry... you're going too Ft Bragg out of Basic/AIT so you can write whatever you want on that dream list, lol, it's not going too matter. As far as Infantry guys in Italy (at least when I was there) there were very few privates. Typically the lowest rank was Specialist because again, one had too reenlist too get it. The exception was after 9/11 they breifly flooded the place with new (Infantry) Privates to bolster the units and also when they were ramping up 2/503rd. That didn't last very long though. Having said that there's tons of support roles but it's an Airborne unit. So if you're not Airborne you can pretty much forget Italy. But hey, things could have changed since I was there. While deployed in Iraq I received orders for Ft. Polk and was all like "Ohhhh heeellll noooo"....and just decided to get out instead at that point. lol. My contract was already done, I was living that Stop Loss life.....So I was already a little bitter. I'm sure I could have gotten out of it but It was a "needs of the Army" thing. They were looking to get NCO's with combat experience too some of the various training installations. I mean I get it, that made sense....but screw Ft. Polk. I did one JRTC training rotation there and that was enough for me...that place is a straight dumpster fire and as far as I'm concerned that entire state can go f*ck itself.
