I'd add this advice: volunteer for army schools and classes as well as additional duties. Coming from someone who volunteered for: unit armorer course, air assault school, Transportation of Hazardous Materials course, and finally, put a packet in for WOCS to be an Army Aviator. And guess what, when people see you were a Unit Armorer as an E4 and got a 100% on the annual physical security inspection, among other things, you get selected. Do good, and good things will happen to you.

I had a Drill Sergeant that told us the most important thing to be successful in the Army and in life, in general, and it was very simple and benefits me to this day ( i'm 61 years old). He said "Be where you are supposed to be, when you are supposed to be there." I have found throughout my life that this is true. I advise all of my nieces and nephews of this and it is true. The beautiful thing about the Army is that if you are present and accounted for... They will make sure that you get in shape, have the right uniform and equipment, learn what you need and be successful. It's just that simple.

After your 1st stripe .. ask your platoon sgt/ or 1st sgt what you need to do to get your next stripe . I made e5 in 18 mos. That was the tip from our Drill Sgt on our last day in boot camp..D-2-1 Ft Jackson. 🙂 6/77. -9/77. Graduated OCS 11A 10-16-79. 🇺🇸😁. So follow the tips given here by others and drive on!

Good Stuff. I'll add two. If you do mess up on the weekend let your chain of command know. It's much better than them finding out later (bad news doesn't get better with time). Second, If you're in charge be in charge. If your not then support the person who is in charge to the best of your ability. Ok, there is a third. If your given a task but your instructions aren't perfectly clear then ask for clarification. This will save you and your supervisor some frustration.

Make sure you have a good understanding of what your MOS actually does, and that it'll be a good fit for you. Don't get sucked into doing something you're going to hate for an enlistment bonus; 4-6 years is a long time to be stuck in a job you hate. It's going to color your entire military experience.

When I was in Vietnam I was evacuated to the Army hospital in Japan. There was a HUGE patient I saw from time to time in the hallways. He wore two hospital bathrobes, one on each side. He disappeared for awhile and then reappeared. I asked around and found out about him. He had been stationed in Saigon with a desk job and too many donuts. His commander sent him to the hospital to lose weight. Eventually the hospital sent him back, but his commander met him at the plane and said you're going right back, since he didn't lose enough. I also found that he couldn't be weighed on the normal balance scale we all used. Instead, he was taken to the mess hall kitchen to be weighed on the meat scale like a side of beef.

I was only late twice in my time in the Army... after that I would wake up 3am, walk over to the barracks (I lived in housing on post), go back to sleep in the Common Room, get woken up at 5am for PT. I think my biggest problem that my unit had was I was on a different frequency in terms of thinking and I didn't have a car (which is what they would use to justify that I couldn't be SGT). But I got a lot of good time there.. I was my platoon's best teacher for our job as I knew more about it than I should of known and had proven good at training joes to do the job with better understanding of it. All in all had fun.

Something I learned about the on post gym: the gym isn’t exclusive to active duty/guard/reserves. Dependents, civilians and contractors can also use the gym. That said, the gym will deny access to non military individuals during peak hours I’m a contractor for the army. I’m planning on enlisting in 12 months though. Good advice. Served me well...promoted to E-2 during basic training in December, to E-3 three months later in April, to E-4 in October, to E-5 five months later. No schools or advanced training after basic training, everything was OJT. Offered a promotion to E-6 if I would attend the NCO academy. I declined in lieu of an early ETS for college. Success mainly attributed to bearing and attitude. A lot of re-enlistment “chats” with the CSM and other senior NCO’s. The AR unit where I lived contacted me after active duty more than once to offer me E-6 as an instructor.

Unless you're a WWII era vet, I call bullshit. There's a point system involved wtih promotions above E4 and you don't get "offered" E-6. If you don't meet the cut off scores for your MOS for your next promotion for E5 and E6, you don't get promoted. Period. Not to mention the fact that the time line you just described doesn't even meet the minimum TIG/TIS requirements for E-5. Even in the secondary zone for E5, its a minimum of 18 months time in service, and a minimum 4 months at E4. For E-6, minimum time in service is 48 months minimum in the secondary zone (board appearance at 46 months at earliest).

I saw it happen frequently, very entertaining to watch but would not want to be the recipient. What do you mean "failed?" Didn't score high enough for the MOS you wanted? Or do you mean you didn't score a minimum of 35?? Either way, perhaps the military is not right for you? Recruits who do not do well on the ASVAB generally do not have a positive military experience.

@@nickmalon7577 You still didn't explain what you meant by failed. Was it a record ASVAB or was it a practice ASVAB given by your recruiter? If it was a record ASVAB and it was your first, you have to wait at least a month before retaking the test. If it was just a practice ASVAB, the waiting period doesn't apply. Buy yourself "ASVAB for Dummies" and use it. It will help you prepare for the ASVAB and can help to greatly improve your score.

When I became a team leader as a corporal in a rifle squad in Aco 1/24 Infantry Regiment at Ft Lewis I had a policy that if you weren't 15 minutes early, you were 10 minutes late. And when I became a Squad Leader I would tell soldiers about whether something was appropriate for a soldier to do...then they already knew the answer...if you have to ask, don't do it!

@@idontgotagun9867 First, there's no "trying out" for 11B or any other MOS. Its not a sports team where you're chosen if you're good enough. Your Drill Sergeants will set you up for success and ensure that you are properly trained and succeed. If you are an 11B, plan on being deployed. Even though we're drawing down troops from Afghanistan and Iraq, there is a very good probability that you will be deployed. There's also a good probability that you may be sent to an OCONUS base like Korean, Germany etc. First things first. Study for your ASVAB. Trust me when I say this. Getting a good score (anything over an 80) will open up a lot of doors for you and it will put you in the drivers seat when dealing with your recruiter. Good luck.

I did it at 34 with two kids, yes people will give you a lot of shit because you are the oldest guy. Also it depends what goals you have in mind. But as long as you keep a positive actitud and a lot of motivation you will be fine. Never give up no matter the pain, (because you will experience a lot of pain) and always excel in your pt score.

No. In fact, its a horrid idea. If you have 2 or more dependents under the age of 18 in addition to your spouse (total of 3 or more), you will require a "dependent waiver." These are not the hardest waivers to get. People enlist all the time who have more than 2 kids and a spouse. But, you will have to show that you will be able to support your family at your enlistment pay grade and able to maintain good finances. You will be issued a security clearance which means that if you do not have good finances/credit when you enlist or you will not be able to maintain good credit/finances, you will not be issued a clearance and that severely limits your choice of MOS. As for your age, 34 is not too old especially if you're in good shape. If you're not in good shape, then, you really should do something about that BEFORE you enlist. Otherwise, your age and your weight will draw attention to you at BCT and trust me, you don't want that. The cut off age is 35 for the Army. So, as long as you sign the contract before your 36th birthday, you can enlist. An E2 with less than 2 years time in service will earn a base salary of just over $22,000 per year, before taxes. If you are authorized to live off post, you will be entitled to BAH, which is Basic Allowance for Housing and that amount varies depending on where you're stationed. During BCT, you will not be authorized to bring your family with. That means you would be entitled to Family Separation Pay (FSA) of $250 per month in addition to your base pay. Whether or not FSA continues after BCT depends on how long your AIT is and the length of your AIT determines whether or not your family is authorized to be with you during AIT. If you have dependents, you will also receive BAS (Basic Allowance for Sustenance) which is another $372 per month. That's more or less what you can expect until you complete BCT and AIT. There are additional allotments such as clothing allowances and "special duty pay" and others that can be earned once you complete AIT and arrive at your first duty station. But, not before. However, unless your spouse has a good job, you're probably going to have a difficult time making ends meet on E2 pay. Also, you will not be with your spouse or your children for the 10 weeks of BCT. You will talk to them but, you will not see them until graduation or after. If your AIT is 20 weeks or less, you won't see them then, either. Once you graduate from AIT, you will have 1 week of vacation, 2 if your recruiter requested "hometown recruiting", before you're due to arrive at your first duty station. The Army will pay for your family to move to your new duty station and at your rank, you will likely have to live in government provided housing on Post which means no more BAH or family separation pay. The only way you would be able to live off post, is if there is no available government housing for your pay grade, which happens, but, is rare. In that narrow instance, if you are authorized to live off post, you would be allowed to keep your BAH. Military life is not easy and its just as hard, if not harder, on dependents. If you enlist, you will miss very large chunks of their lives. You must be prepared to accept that brutal reality.

I dont remember any in my basic or AIT. You have a few here and there at the unit sometime. If they are overweight though then they are not able to get promoted and cant re-enlist. They are often on a program that has them doing PT twice a day too.

In the "combat arms" MOS's, you will see fewer fat bodies. However, in the "support MOS's," you are likely to see more. But, even then, there aren't that many. But, they do exist.

Depends on the person i guess. Sure it will help you by starting at a higher rank but past that can depend on that soldier. I've know people with degrees that were dumber than some that just had a high school diploma.

@@dalestephan6777 I think you need to check your facts. Its very rare for a soldier to be promoted to E4 in AIT, unless they are a reclass from another MOS.

Active you can get a stripe.went in as e3(college Rotc) finally finished college and then got my gold bar (1979). Btw my mos was 6mos.+3 mos basic = 9. So in the 3rd mo of AiT got E4. This was 1976. So I realize regs change over time. Became 11A so I'm not butt hurt at all. Please make sure you have all your ducks in a row, before you call someone out. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🙂
