I read this selfhelp book and the tip it gave to me is that when you really want to do something that seems out of reach, mark a date. doesn't matter when that date is, just be realistic and be ready to work hard for it. And last year I made my first, but short backpacking trip which lasted 5 weeks, but it won't be my last.

Most of us have at least a few years of life left, so that's plenty of time. Walking through China can't be very expensive. Maybe 4 or 5 USD per night for lodging if you stay at a guesthouse. Food and water is around 6 USD per day. I'd like to visit Xinjiang someday, the furthest west I've been in China is Qinghai Lake, and I bumped into a couple of people biking across Asia in Xining. I don't have the patience for walking that far though. After 10 kilometers or so of walking out of town I just hitchhike or catch a bus!

This looks amazing, lots of questions... How did you keep all of your gear charged? How dangerous was the walk? How did you keep track of where you were and where you were going (AKA not get lost)? What contingency plans did you have for if you became ill or were injured? What languages did you learn for/during the trip and did you know Mandarin/Cantonese before you started the first walk? How much did it cost overall for the whole walk? How did you select your route? etc...
