That was a brave retelling of a terrible day. I wasn't one of the need to know the gruesome details of Marc's accident. That is your family's personal life details. An insightful comment from someone who has seen trauma up close. Thank you so very much for sharing how very important it is to share the trauma. The retelling it helps to deal with the fear and terror. I am sure that you are doing everything to hold things together and “ to hold the fort down.” I hope that you have help, especially with two little ones. Being a care giver is not for the faint of heart especially with a growly bear who has momentarily lost their independence.

I was an EMT many years ago and I can concur that people can slip away quite quickly when they lose too much blood. Kudos to you Amy for keeping pressure on his leg to stem the flow of blood. One experience I had was a husband who sat on his wife's thighs to move the blood up to the heart and the vital organs because she had a self-inflicted injury on her wrists which he also wrapped tightly. But that wouldn't have been an option for you since his injury was on his leg. This man had used MAST (Military Anti-Shock Trousers) in Vietnam as a medic, that when pumped up with a certain psi would shunt blood up to the vital organs and keep men who were losing blood alive longer until they could be put on an IV and stitched up, etc. He surmised he could keep her alive longer by putting pressure on her legs. He may have been right because she did survive. I got a similar gash in my thigh when I fell off a roof I was working on and fell on an exposed pipe. My friend just threw me in the car and drove me to the emergency room and I put a tourniquet on in the car en route. My father also suffered a grave injury to his leg when he fell through some grating on an oil rig in the South China Sea ...but luckily there was a full-time doctor and surgeon on the rig ...after getting stitched up he was flown to Kalimantnan on a helicopter and then sent to Singapore for a more thorough check-up. If there hadn't been a doctor on that rig, he would have bled out & died, because they were too far from any hospital. We do what we have to do at the time. Time is of the essence, remember that. As an EMT we learnt about "the Golden Hour". Everyone should know what that is also, but depending on the severity of the injury it can be a lot shorter than that. Anyone living in the countryside should learn basic training to save their loved one's lives. Again ...time is of the essence.

I'm so glad he and you are recovering from the scary incident... one thing I hope you'll do, or him, when he's better, is to put an upside-down bucket over every projecting sharp stick or piece of metal. Farms are muddy, slippery places and impalement injuries are common. A colorful upside-down bucket also reminds us to yank that thing out of the ground. You're lucky to be in France. That injury here in the US would be a $100k expense..with zero nurses to change dressings. Hugs to you all❤

Perhaps chateau friends could also spare equipment that will make things easier for you too.

I totally understand your reasoning for moving into the coach house as we've lived thru a home restoration from ceiling to floor and everything in-between. Definitely NOT a safe or sanitary place for children! EVERYTHING is always covered with a fine layer of dust EVEN IF you close off the room you're working on. Very SMART of you to think ahead, finish the coach house and move in before resuming work on the chateau. I also understand a bit about leg injuries. I had a knee injury with a deep gash that required inside and outside stitches for a total of 31, and another leg wound years later that wouldn't heal and required deriding. I pray that Marc doesn't have complications with his leg.🙏 IF Marc develops redness, swelling, trouble breathing, and/or coughing up blood, get him help immediately! My knee injury caused major swelling and a Pulmonary Embolism (PE), which is a blood clot that traveled from my leg and lodged in my lung. Leg wounds are notorious for blood clots. I don't want to scare you, but forewarned is forearmed. IF a clot lodges in your lung, you can't breath, thus PE. If it lodges in your heart, it causes a heart attack, and in your brain, a stroke. PLEASE pay close attention to Marc's symptoms! Through my experiences, I learned a diet of meat and veg (protein and greens) helps tremendously in the healing process. I'm assuming Marc has to cover his leg while bathing. I wore a rubber shower boot. It was a pain in the who-know-where, but it kept my leg dry, and it was easier to use rather than wrapping my leg with plastic wrap (Saran Wrap in the US). You can find shower boots on Amazon. Again, I will keep you guys in my prayers.

But they did arrive, Marc was treated and he received the care he needed. Living remotely is a concern. Its so comforting that you had friends and neighbors who could help. But you must be exhausted from all the turmoil. Being the caretaker of the patient as well as your children and the whole estate can only be overwhelming. My heart goes out to your family and I pray for your hearing and getting fully back on your feet. Best wishes to Marc on his recovery. And I will eagerly await your Chateau restoration journey.

Yes, they are treating deep, slow-healing wounds with medicinal honey with great results. Happened to my husband with a wound Dr.s had been treating for sometime and they called for the honey pads - bang - results. Also hoping the two of you will then be able to organize almost with your local medical attendants, almost a code system so you can call and say something like - Help - Rosières - Fire or Accident or something and - Urgent - and have given them a sheet with location, your phones, your names and directions to you- for them to grab when you say Rosières so you and they can then concentrate on What the problem is and the urgency without having to be bogged down by the who and where. I would think they would be grateful and you are spared at least that much French. Love to you both. I had the shock thing happen with my dearly beloved and do understand. You think you are managing it and then suddenly you are unwell and not.
