Chrysler PT Cruiser Timing Belt Replacement 2.4 Engine. How to replace the timing belt on Pt Cruiser.
► Our Website for Tools, Parts and more Videos: mechaniclifestyle.com
We took this video to show you what you need to do in order to replace the timing belt on a Chrysler Pt Cruiser 2.4 Engine. Most Shops and Dealers will Charge you over $1000+ for timing belt replacement. If you know what you are doing it takes about 3-4 hours to take it apart and put it back together. The most important thing is to get the timing right!!! All the marks must be on the right spot.
It is the same procedure for all Chrysler Pt Cruiser Models with the 2.4 Non turbo engine. The turbo engine is about the same procedure but the tensioner is a little different.
NEVER try to pry the timing belt on the gears with tools. It will take you some time to put it on the gears but never pry it. Make sure that the tensioner is loose while you are installing the new belt and do not forget to tighten it after that.
It will cover:
2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2003 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2004 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2007 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2008 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2009 Chrysler Pt Cruiser
2010 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Thanks for the video. Remember when you replace or reattach the center motor mount, you need to get the T55 bolt hole centered in the fender hole before you torque down the bolts that hold it in. Otherwise your upper torque strut will never bolt into the big heavy bracket and you'll stress all the motor mount rubber bushings and tear them prematurely.

I'm going to have to check this immediately. I've already replaced the bushings and they are already tearing after only a year. Thanks for this comment!

Wow I just spent most of the day getting to the point where you start this vid. Holy crap. Never ever again. I rather toss the car and by a GM. than go through this. I actually imagine this being fairly easy if you pull the motor and put it back in. But I found everything is just Miserable tight compact. I my case I had to pull all the engine mounts and strap pull the engine away from that side of the side wall, to make room to get that cast bracket out. I am lined up and done for tonight. (You make it look so easy.)

it was noiser and it lasted longer...
@21stcenturyfossil7
@21stcenturyfossil7 3 жыл бұрын
@@mirekchance , depends what you mean by "lasted longer". The pins and links in the chain wore, the timing gears wore and, typically, the cam/ignition timing would be about 5 degrees retarded from stock at 100,000 miles. Because the distance between the links no longer matched the pitch of the timing gears, eventually, either the teeth would break off the cam gear or the chain would jump off the crank gear. I've replaced many worn timing sets on old engines and I know one of the reasons cars continue to run well at 100,000 miles is the change to timing belts.
@c172215s
@c172215s 3 жыл бұрын
@@21stcenturyfossil7 Agreed. However with new technology and inverted tooth chains the trend is back to chains, but they have to get lubrication. ie GM's high feature V6 had timing chain issues for a few years because of poor QC. The Honda 2.4l K series will run for 250k or more and stay in time even with VVT. It is a chain driven DOHC.

@mpcoley1
@mpcoley1 7 жыл бұрын
It's called a partial interference. The valves will not hit the pistons, but they could hit each other and bend. The motor could run, once the belt has been replaced, even with bent valves, but will typically break soon due to the valves being bent and constantly banging off the seat. The only way to tell is to put the belt on and do a leak down pressure test for each cylinder with the cylinder at TDC (top dead center) to test if the valves are seating properly.

The video then skips to the entire belt being on. How do you get the belt on the top sprockets? Do you use lubricant because it is very tight and extremely difficult to place on the sprockets.

John Hill 107k miles at the latest. My daughters just broke at 114k and I'm junking the car. It's about $1000-$1500 to have a mechanic do this. Her car is a 2007 and it's just not worth it.

That three-jaw puller is undersized for the job and you probably weakened it. There is a better special tool for this particular pulley and it works great.

If you can't get the harmonic balancer off with a regular puller you can rent the actual Chrysler harmonic balancer puller from parts store.

Can't hit valves in this engine it's non interferance...still would suck to have to do it twice thou

sounds like in order to do a job like this you first need to scream and run the other way. Next ask yourself why you let yourself buy a car with a timing belt and then either replace it or take the car somewhere

The problem with this car is chrysler didnt care about anything else but body design on the pt shoving a neon into another body and the hell with repair problems this made Chevy astro second in the biggest pain in the butt to work on

Wait, all this to just replace the belt? I can't even check mine regularly with the cover on. Who designed this POC a sadist? No bailouts for Chrysler ever! It's pretty sad, because this could almost be a cheap, likeable car.

This procedure will not work with the 2.4L Turbocharged engine. The engine will not lower sufficiently to provide clearance to remove the lower bolt from the engine mount / ps pump bracket. The engine must be removed to remove the bracket, and thus replace the timing belt.
@johnraney5331
@johnraney5331 7 жыл бұрын
Did you remove the entire engine? Becuase I have the same thing with turbo and can not figure out how to get that brackect off. I got 2 bolts out of it with a little notcing of the frame but the third is impossible.

No, I gave up and did not replace the timing belt nor the middle engine mount. I had the same experience: could not get the third bolt out.

Ok I got it! You must unbolt all engine and trans. mounts and lower the engine down to get them out. But holy crap getting the new belt on was a challange!
@doitalldad4211
@doitalldad4211 7 жыл бұрын
CHOPSHOPUNDERGROUND no, that still did not work for the 2006 turbo because there is a part of the chassis that prevents the engine from lowering sufficiently to get that last bolt out.
