My grandmother would make them , i remember that dark molasses and brown sugar with big hunks of ham. So delicious. A full meal with a couple fresh buttered buns .

I doubt the individuals complainimg about the canned beans have even ever camped outside much less cooked baked beans from scratched in the bush. Good job Dave, those look delish.

Beans are good for food when one is hiking. They dont weigh much. I allways bring them with me when I am outdoors.

Bay leaves can be left whole for the same result and easier to remove, they don't soften and can taste very bitter (tannins). Thanks Dave! I will try the apple cider vinegar next time, looks amazing 😋
@wolfeb992 жыл бұрын
Bay leaves can also be dangerous. Really shouldn’t eat them because those hard edges can do damage to your digestive tract.

Basecamp Cat likes beans & mead! 😻 I love baked beans. Grandpa would make them with ham saved from Sunday dinner. He would add chopped jalapeños, but then again he added jalapeños to just about everything. 😂

Regarding the comments about using canned baked beans in this series. I would like to use a phrase that you used years ago on one of your videos when slicing through summer sausage, "let the haters hate". Please keep up the fantastic content!

Third version of Dave's baked beans in as many months. I can live with that!
@erichartford68332 жыл бұрын
For those that are a bit nervous, Bay leaves may be eaten without toxic effect. However, they remain unpleasantly stiff even after thorough cooking, and if swallowed whole or in large pieces they may pose a risk of harming the digestive tract or causing choking.Thus, most recipes that use bay leaves will recommend their removal after the cooking process has finished.

Tammy was done cooking a pound of bacon for her beans when I asked if I could help by pouring off the ton of grease in that heavy iron frypan. "Pour it off? No way-- pour it all into those beans," yelled Tammy. Everybody thought they were great beans, and there were no heart attacks.

My brother-in-law has made his own wine (mead, Sake, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Shiraz, etc... )for the last few decades. He purchases his supplies from Label Peelers in Ravenna, Ohio. If you're serious about making your own wine, you might want to check out their inventory.

@whomagoose68972 жыл бұрын
I missed it if you mentioned what variety of beans you used. They look like Navy beans. I have been using a variety called Cranberry beans. Also called October beans. Look like Pinto beans but have purple streaks. That disappear when cooking. Have a more creamy texture and the skins don't fall off. Cook like any other bean variety.

I saw the title and thumbnail and wondeted how you cook baked beans in cast Iron without stripping the seasoning. The only baked beans i've eaten are in a tomato sause that is acidic. I like the look of this recipe, more of a bbq sauce.

I'd make them with the bacon I just finished - Honey Bourbon Maple Syrup cherry wood smoked. Never have I ever eaten better tasting bacon. You will never see this stuff in any store, either. What happened to Matt Mercer? Haven't seen him post a SRO cooking video for a while.

Right, so I'm from the UK. I think our experience of baked beans is from a tin covered in tomato sauce. I've watched several videos about making traditional US baked beans. Are they supposed to be very sweet with a slight savoury taste from the bacon or a balance of the two? It just seems to me that the amount of sugar that goes into this dish makes it more of a desert than anything else. This is a genuine question. I would love to try traditional beans, I'm just curious about the taste. Great video as always.
@I_Doo_Declare2 жыл бұрын
