Chula Vista: 14 Vehicle Collision & More 06232024

LOCATION: Bay Blvd/ SB I-5 & NB I-5

DETAILS:
The male driver of the white BMW was driving northbound on Bay Blvd. At one point, he crashed into a power pole, bringing it down along with large power lines/cables.
The cables came down across the I-5 and were sitting at head level. Drivers could not see the cables as they drove down the freeway and impacted them. 11 vehicles heading south on the I-5 all hit the cables. 2 vehicles heading north were also hit. The cables came down across the MTS trolley tracks east of the I-5 and disrupted service. The cables also landed in a children’s playground at Colorado St and K St.
Luckily, there were no injuries. The original driver who caused the incident was “Tested & Arrested” for DUI. Power is out to 237 SDG&E customers.

A word of advice. When you see that multiple cars are pulled over on the highway, slow down safely and use caution. Someone in a local group noticed a ton of cars pulled over and drove straight into the cables. Thank goodness no one was injured or worse. For those who are new to the area, if you see a police vehicle zigzagging from left to right while slowing down, slow down, don’t try to keep up with them and don’t try to go around them. Law enforcement zigzags to either slow traffic or to stop traffic. Sorry, there are so many people who don’t understand what is happening and think it’s okay to pass the emergency vehicle.
