Thanx Mark. Very good lecture! I've already sent link to friends who are vacationing with unbelieving friends in Italy right now... it'll help them communicate how the Gospel made a difference in Italy's early history. Again, thanx. Hope you read or are forwarded these comments.

I wanted to learn specifically about the Council, it appears based on this title that this lecture has that in it, but I've now listened to it and I've not really learned much past the creed. In case anyone else out there is looking for the same thing, this lecture doesn't dive deep but perhaps sets up the tone for it.

Sarah, Thank you for pointing this out. This is not a Lecture it is a Bible class. Perhaps there may be more of what you are looking for in the class handout. it often has more than can be presented in class. if not at least it can direct you to sources for your further study in the footnotes. Here is a link to the resources for Church History. this lesson is #12 on Page 2, 4th from the top. cllick on handout and it will download a PDF copy on your computer to view. biblical-literacy.org/lessons/church-history/

Although I appreciate your stance, I hear a lot more “perspective/opinion” more than I do actual fact when it comes to whether Christ was the same as the father or just the son of the father. So here we have the Bible which makes a few statements concerning this. Jesus saying, “I and my father are one”, while at the same time stating he is going to his Father which is greater than him. Then he is always referring to his father in 2nd person which doesn’t help your argument. It actually backs Arians argument more. It’s complicated to look at something in context when we don’t really understand the context in it of itself. It’s a battle of each person’s point of view. How I understand the relationship of Jesus and the Father being one is that Jesus is the (form/flesh or rather the “living word and will of the Father” personified). The sole purpose was to demonstrate to us, his creation, what the will and word of God looks like in human form and behavior. How to be “perfect like our Father is perfect in heaven”. I worry sometimes though. That perhaps Jesus was just a beautiful man who truly loved and desired to do the will of God and therefore completely aligned his heart/mind/soul with it and it became his soul mission even if death became of it. I worry that we have made an idol of him, loving him more than we do the father. It’s a little scary, because there are serious consequences for putting something or someone else before the father. I don’t know, just sharing my thoughts 💭

As I understand it, it was Theodosius that proclaimed a state religion of Rome, not Constantine. Constantine merely made Christianity legal in Rome. And the state religion erected by Theodosius wasn't Christianity, it was Universalism. The phrase he used was that 'the religion of Rome will be the universal religion'. Constantine adopted Christianity for political purposes. His advisers were largely Aryan heretics. And he's the one who at nicea argued for changing the greek text of the book of Hebrews to accomodate the Aryans. Constantine's concern was unity of empire - a theme which Theodosius carried on. The reason for nicea was to halt religious discontent within the empire as it was as great a risk while the empire was under constant assault militarily from without. These are things you'll find in most history books. I draw from Michael Grant''s "Constantine the Great" for the above. The missing pieces for most people is 'what is this "universal" religion'. It had it's start in the 1st century after a man named Simon went to Rome and began to establish a following. This happened ca. 42AD and it is well known to history. He continued teaching a mix of christianity, judaism and pagan religious beliefs. His primary concern was with creating a "universal" religion. And that is precisely what he did. He became so renown that a statue to him was erected in Rome - an unprecidented act. His full name was Simon Magus. His title was Pater or Petr. This notion that Christianity was ever made the state religion of Rome seems to be late propaganda to cover for a cult known as universalism. The text of the edict of Thessalonica uses the term "catholic" or Universal and the decree was made in 380 by Theodosius well after Constantine had died in 337. Moreover, Theodosius states that the Apostle Peter delivered the message to the Romans. This isn't the case. Paul was the Apostle in Rome in those days. The only other claimed apostle in Rome at that time was Simon Magus who was claiming this very thing. Simon Petr the Apostle as it were. We have to remember that History is written not by the most truthful people; but, by the guys with the biggest club (the type they beat you with..). To this end, It is Roman Universalists who have handed us this history. This is like turning church history over to Joseph Smith. We need to stop spreading this nonsense and start spreading the truth. Catholic does not mean "One". It means "universal". That begs, to me, who this guy is representing.

I may have come across Johnson's work at some point; but, can't say I remember it. And if he's really good, I'd have remembered it lol. No, I did most of my own homework and honed it in an 8 year long debate amongst people representing a lot of different religious backgrounds. I've been both studying and debating since the late 80s with a specialization in Roman rite universalism. It's interesting that Roman rite never bothered changing the names of the terms used by Magus to cover their tracks. Also, almost missed a point - yes, I have read the 'fathers' and found them largely wanting. The only useful thing in them is to note that they disagree with the universalists if you bother going to what they actually said instead of taking Universalists' word for it on the citation. I think they only reference outside works to make it look like they know what they're talking about from my experience. They're often and easily busted on this stuff and they never admit it; but, what's new.

You are WRONG. it was not Constantine the Great who made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. It was THEODOSIUS. Constantine only LEGALIZED it along with all other religions. The Edict of Milan was an edict of toleration. Pls. Get your facts right.

This teaching is not for the TRUE people of Israel, this is garbage. Constantine was a sun worshipper, read that information. This guy said he was one of the greatest.... really. I guess he would say that because he too is a sun worshipper.
