My pandemic pod was basically this entire family and extended family of people from Belize. They were pretty much the only people I hung out with for months. One day two of the guys were talking and I chimed in in English (I am a white girl) The look in their eyes! We all laughed it had been so long I understood their patois. Not accurate at all but a good way to nail that stereotypical Jamaican accent though
most of the Patois language is African in origin, primarily from Twi (a dialect of Akan). Many of the loanwords are derived from English, but a lot are also borrowed from Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Arawak and African languages, as well as Scottish and Irish dialects. majority of the white Jamaicans are of Irish or Scottish descent. both are very similar.
