Cap, I watch your videos all the time. Regarding this training video, you give solid advise and I know that you have to be PC about your suggestions. However, a man with a knife, is a huge threat to a lot of people. I am a former LEO and would probably not run from doing my job. We train for these scenarios and should be able to take down the threat to protect the innocent. I noticed also that you didn't mention the 21 foot rule. An individual can close that gap faster than an average adult can draw and get rounds on target. NEVER, let a suspect with a knife get within 21 feet of you. Thanks for great training videos.

Hello lafire great comments, thank you! Yes I feel as though I have to mention the run option, as we have a large number of unarmed church security people that are watching our materials. These are unarmed volunteers, so while I do not expect them to be highly trained as you or I might be, I want to give them the option of being safe and running, I feel for the fact that some of these folks are not allowed to carry or train in those use of force areas. We will be discussing the 21 foot rule, thank you for mentioning that. I intended to provide scenarios for dicussion and a little bit of a base lesson for a discussion, but we have the 21 foot planned for episode 15 of this series. Great comments and I am so glad your community and your church have you and your mindset watching out for them!! Joe

Not to mention that anyone that carries a firearm should also carry nondeadly tools such as pepper spray. I would use that before trying to access a fire extinguisher. Many great points to ponder!

Good point on the 21 foot rule, that's forgotten easily by many

Consider the "22-foot rule". The perp can close the distance faster than you can draw and fire. Be on the ready...whether it's a knife or a firearm. Be aware of the background, e.g., people or thin walls. That is why it is good to practice in various locations in the church. While sitting in the sanctuary on any given Sunday...do the "what if" mental exercise. Set up a zone defense in the sanctuary and practice closing on the person while avoiding cross fire.

Yes! He;s a former cop, so I'm AMAZED that he didn't mention Dennis Tueller's work and the 21 foot rule! (If the guy in the second scenario is as close as he looked- you're already in grave danger, EVEN IF you're armed! One thing to remember is to maintain Situational Awareness at all times. Part of that is to look around any new location you're in - noting where the exits are, and what potential weapons might be in reach.

At any given moment or day apart of my wear is an expandable baton. This would be one of my first choices and then there is those martial arts skills that I have picked up. But as a last measure there always my firearm (and I do mean my last measure).

I am a martial arts weapons instructor. Our first rule when dealing with an aggressor with a knife is expect to get cut. Beyond that the key for the team is to train: evacuate the audience, call law enforcement, engage the person verbally to try and de-escalate the person, and if the person attacks - control the knife hand. This is a massive simplification for a complex situation. I can't emphasize enough, get yourself and your team trained, the practice frequently.

Tuller 21 ft rule, average person(even over weight and old) can cover 21 ft, 7 yards in 3.2 seconds, and is then a moving target

Every Sunday I do security at my church and I always stay in the lobby which is my security post. I wouldn't run away because that would give the attacker more opportunity to come closer. So what I would do is if I see someone with a knife, I first inform my team on the radio about the threat, then I try to intercept him from entering, command him to stop, if he doesn't stop, I ask again and once he gets closer and raise the knife in a threatening manner, that's when I perform the technique. There are many techniques on how to defend yourself from a knife attack on KZbin that's very helpful for those in the security ministry. God bless our ministries 🙏

Rapper....You have an excellent thought process here. I like how you are analyzing and deciding what you would do at what steps. That is great info for your mind when you think through the scenarios!! Excellent! I would also encourage you to look around and see what tools you might use in the lobby where you are to help you in dealing with this possible scenario/situation. Chairs or poles might be tools you choose to use. Your church and people are fortunate to have you working in the lobby!!

I am on the Welcome Ministry Team of a larger church in my city. Another member and myself have had a number of conversations about a more dedicated security team. We do employ two uniformed officers that patrol the parking lots. We are trying to convince our executive pastor to take steps to better secure our perimeter doors which can be time-locked during services. We are discussing increasing our WiFi coverage where the officers patrolling the parking areas could have access to various cameras at the entrances. It's sort of an uphill battle to get their "blessing," however. It's a head in the sand mentality. At the next business meeting, I think we need to have it on the agenda. Your training videos could be an eyeopener for our church.

I would use a Chair or if you're strong enough use a table to farther the distance between you and the attacker. I would keep a chair and table close by the entrance. metal chair are great for defense and table for helping to barricade a door. Even keep a fan near by would help create distance from you and a knife wielding attacker, worst case use it as a weapon. my thoughts and suggestions.

You're not very effective security, if u run away. How r u gonna feel if someone gets hurt or killed, cuz u failed at ur assignment? He's obviously out to hurt someone, u need to stand up and stop him, with whatever means it takes. Training is gr8, but if you cant deal with possibly hurting or killing someone, then u better think twice about being on security. Your mind set is ur best defensive tool.

Yeah I thought this was an odd thing to say. If you’re on security team, your job is to stand in the gap to protect others. Running (assuming there are others anywhere in the building and you’re aren’t there by yourself) is NOT an option.

I think if unarmed, pepper spray as soon as the knife is seen, or get a blunt object ready and be close enough to throw it. If armed, as soon as knife is seen, gun out, at low ready or sights on the bad guy(what are your thoughts?) I think it depends how close he is to anyone, if he begins to move or lunge, then I think stopping the threat with a firearm is justified.
