The three greatest guitar pickers of all time, in my opinion, have been Tony, Doc Watson and Norman Blake. Tony and Doc are no longer with us and Norman and Nancy are in their later years, but I hope will be with us a long while yet. I like what Tony said about guitar: this instrument has no limitations, any form of music can be played on it. It all depends on the abilities of the musician.

Where to start? First, just WOW! Amazing you've done this at all, much less in two months. Second,, bummer it can't be purchased. KZbin tutorials are good also; I'll be donating o support your work there. I've loved all things Tony since 1985 when I bought a Martin. Have known for many years the Church Street Blues is a fantastic album, just pure uncluttered Tony. But for whatever reason, it took me until few nights ago to listen on some nice headphones. It came alive like never before, making me appreciate Tony more which I didn't think was possible.

I’m 100 percent always listenin on headphones 🎧- those old records are so hauntin - I guess in the end I was just tryin to get closer to the music - kinda like a view inside - but Tony was the only person to have that sight of it - we only try and maybe learn somethin along the way - Charles, I want to thank you for great a message and appreciation left here - really makes a difference!!

Tony uses (as Pebber Brown calls it) "scalpel picking," whereas you're picking from the wrist, like most. Scalpel picking uses up and down movement of thumb and 1st finger tips, like the motion used in drawing circles with a pencil. It's usually discouraged by guitar teachers, but I don't know why - Wyatt uses it, too - as does Jimmy Page and many others - Howard Roberts is another, and Eddie Van Halen. Combined with economy picking, it's blazing fast, and very loud.

Well done man, this is an amazing achievement, I just started getting into flatpicking a couple of weeks ago, been fingerpicking ragtime, country blues & folk styles for years before though.... but from where I’m at right now to where you’re at with this project hurts my brain just thinking about it... if you did a lesson on anything from this record it’d be invaluable but I have to admit if you did a wee tutorial on Church Street Blues you’d definitely get at least a couple of hundred views out of me alone. Randy, in the name of full disclosure, your treatment of CSB, was the only one that was even close to TR’s to date. This tune is to flatpickers, what Little Wing is to us old Start rockers. It’s more in the hands, and the soul than it is just pure technical chops. However, this has taken me years to even get close and be able to sing at the same time. I learned Little Wing when I was 16.

I'd love a tutorial on "Last Thing On My Mind". I play it more like Clarence White (as I find his version a bit more approachable), but I really appreciate Tony's pick work on his version, especially the double down strokes. "One More Night" would be great too. Great video. I hope you find a way to publish your transcription.

What a great channel and series of videos you have. I wonder if you have interest in transcribing Tony’s work with the David Grisman Quintet? @@chrisbrennanguitar Hey Chris ! Thanks for responding.....I am a retired Pre Press Technician.....in the old days I was called a stripper.....so I know a little about the printing biz......I wasn't suggesting you put out a PDF WITHOUT copyright permission....I would recommend you hire a Trademark/Copyright lawyer to find out who has the actual rights to the music ( I am guessing there's a Tony Rice estate ) and reach out to them about putting your work out there .....whether you have a hard copy printed or put it in digital form (PDF ) or both ....and what royalties the Estate would expect %-wise etc. Chris ....I just want to encourage you to keep at it.....your lessons and Tribute to Tony Rice are outstanding ( in my opinion ) and I would love to be able to down load a copy of your work when its available ! On a personal note.....I started playing acoustic guitar in '73 and am still learning new stuff and I had to get a Trademark lawyer for my band logo I designed.....I'll know by April whether or not the Trademark office approves it ....the same lawyer can copyright my original songs that I am completing....( but I've done it before so I can do that petty easily myself )....Obviously I won't post ANY original music online until the copyrights are approved......This is my last big shot at the so called....Big Time ......but succeed or fail .....I'll be able to say I busted my a## to make it happen and won't have to look back and regret that I didn't try .....one more time ! Sorry to write a novel ....Hope it Helps ! Peace and Keep on Picking Bro !
