The British Government kept the “Operation Unthinkable” document a secret, even from their closest allies, the Americans. After the war, Churchill made no reference to it, not even in his memoirs. It was declassified only a half a century after, in 1998. It was only then that the world got to know how close they had been to World War III.

While it sounded good in theory,we need to remember a few things: #1:The Western Allies were tired of fighting.They fought their way from North Africa to Germany #2:The U.S. Army troops were concerned that they might be shipped to the Pacific to take part in Operation Olympic the planned invasion of mainland Japan. I knew a few old timers who were ready to start training for the invasion of Japan in early '46. They were grateful and overjoyed when they got the news about the Abombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. #3:The Russkies had also fought their way from Moscow to Berlin and they weren't gonna be pushovers!!

Assuming that all involved conflicts were included in WW2, it would probably be more akin to the 30 Years war of the 1600's... if the war ended in, say 1949, it would probably just be called the 10 Years War in Europe, much like so many other wars.

The scary thing is that this almost happened without churchills plan. I had several great unlce in laws that fought in ww2. The troops talked as the fighting got closer and closer to Berlin and many were convinced that they would be back within another 20 years to fight the soviets. When the allies were stationed across from the soviets during the germans surrender, some of the us forces started aiming at the soviets. A commanding officer noticed and ordered them to stand down. They did as ordered otherwise we'd have a completly different history here.

Imagine being a German in this timeline. You invade the Soviet Union, fight the biggest battles in human history, push to within sight of Moscow but falter, spend the next two years failing to stop the red tide. The war gets all the way back to Berlin, Hitler makes one good decision, but it's too late, the fronts are closing in. The Reich has fallen; you've lost but somehow survived it all. Then, only a few weeks later, Winston Churchill appears and offers you a job. You go with him, end up at some massive staging area in western Germany, and ask him about the job. He turns around with a smile, holding a tommy gun and a cigar and says: "Why Jerry, the job is Barbarossa 2, Electric Boogaloo. Now let's go kill some commies."

My father served with the German Kriegsmarine and became a POW in April 1945 at the Isle of Fehmarn. To his surprise he then was suddenly transferred to the 10th Fallschirmjäger division, whitch was held under British command until Labour Party won the elections against Winston Churchill's conservatives. After that the German POW in british captivity had to lay down their personal weapons. Rumors went that Churchill was preparing all German prisoners in the British occupied territory for an imminent roll back against the Red Army.

I can’t speak for all Poles, but for me it’s a mixed feeling. On one side we lost so many people, our cities got destroyed, we didn’t have much food left and such a war would cause even more death, destruction and famine. But on the other hand, the idea of avoiding 44 years of red tyranny and not losing our eastern territories seems beautiful. But the war would probably last so long that it wouldn’t be worth it.

I love possible alternate history and seeing the post war German troops fighting side by side with the British just seems like something you would only ever see in a hearts of iron game. The whole thing seems so surreal and weird like it actually happened in another timeline. Would be cool to see a movie or show kinda like this on the war playing out. Still the same outcome of the British losing the war but what would become of the world had it happened, nukes not being able to be used due to lack of fighter superiority.

It was not for nothing that Churchill wanted the German army at his side. After all, they have the most experience with the sovjets as they have fought with them for years and hate them similarly to the Eastern Europeans for their crimes on a Mongolian level. Y'know, it's pretty disingenuous to say that the soviets had 2.5 times the men simply because they had 2.5 times the divisions. Their standard rifle division was thousands of men smaller than their western counterparts, at full strength. I highly doubt many of the closest Soviet divisions towards the west were anywhere near full strength at that time. Though I'm not saying that means an attack by the west would've been feasible just that the numbers were not anywhere near 2.5 times the men.
@iMajoraGaming
@iMajoraGaming Жыл бұрын
I mean, no, not really, all the data we have shows that the USSR flatly outnumbered the Allies' planned strength in Western Europe, in every way. Their entire strategy was fundamentally based around that fact. They themselves knew and historical records show that yes, the Soviets would have outnumbered the Allies by 2.5 to 1. That's not just in division quantity, real life is not Hearts of Iron IV. They had more actual men too. That was a basic fact of Allied contingency plans. It's disingenuous to pretend to have cracked the code and figured out that all that data and Allied planning was a lie because you found out that USSR division composition and organization was different. They still outnumbered the Allies. 2.85 to 1 by some estimates. They had several thousand more aircraft too.

The Soviets invaded Poland in 1939 on the Germans' side, they were allies until Operation Barbarossa. Look up the Molotov-Ribbentrop Treaty. They split up Poland between them. The Polish had no love for either. Now ask yourself why the British declared war on ze Germans for invading Poland but didn't do anything about the Soviets invading Poland...

Worth noting that, although the Soviets had more divisions in Europe than the western Allies, they had nearly depleted their manpower reserves by the end of the war, while the Americans still had a large pool of men who could be sent to fight if needed; additionally, the Soviet industrial and agricultural bases had suffered a great deal of damage from the German invasion, while those of the U.S. and U.K. were still mostly (U.K.) to entirely (U.S.) intact.

The Soviet Red Army was having man power problems by 1943 and by the battle of Berlin the units that attacked Berlin were only at 80% strength, the reason the Soviets had more divisions was that they were smaller in terms of manpower
@north_warwolf1183
@north_warwolf1183 2 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, a lot of those divisions were almost anhiliated in the ensuing tide in Germany. Plus, for every Zhuckov, [who's loyalty to the USSR would be... Questionable given how close he was with Ike], you had a 1945 Era Putin and Tsar Nicholas commanding other overall fronts. Plus, the Anglo-American-Polak Airborne Army was a MASSIVE tactical asset compared to the extremely infant VDV and Spetsnaz. And he did downplay air power. I'm quite confident once the IL-2 fleet of the USSR was decapitated, the US P-47's and British Hawker Typhoons would've been much more of an asset against Soviet logistics [which were already near breaking at times], and Soviet combat, especially armored formations. I mean, the Germans ANHILIATED A WHOLE ARMORED CORPS [Or division) WITH STUKA'S IN KURSK! The US could easily do the same, especially if those Naval and Marine Avaitors could join the fight. Then the Whermacht divisions with their remaining Tigers, Panthers, Panzer IV's, and other such weapons along with lended Sherman's and other designs would've been a sight to behold, especially when you consider they still had quite the considerable K/D Ratio against Soviet T-34's. When you consider that Germany would still be able to put up quite a fight for their size, and that the USSR was I'm quite a precarious position, and not to mention you'd be putting the Chuck Yeagers and the Erich Hartmann's of the war together on the same side, it's not quite as simple as "HEHE! URRRRA GO BRRRRRR!"
