@jamesdevine023 жыл бұрын
I can completely understand the point you made about each track feeling like an attempt at a hit single, however I personally don't view that as a bad thing, especially when I feel that almost every song succeeds at it. I certainly don't believe that this flaw and the others you mentioned are great enough to drag it down to anything below a 7 or 8/10. It's pop music so of course it will be "formulaic" to a degree (i.e. it has a verse, chorus, bridge, catchy melodies etc), but I believe that enough variation is packed into the tracklist to keep it interesting and make each individual track extremely memorable. This album tugs on the emotions of the listener in, for me, all the right ways and the journey that the album takes you on feels exhilarating and gratifying as a result. The luscious production, relentless melodic hooks in both verses and choruses, and overall dramatic and cinematic nature of this album make it a highly valuable one to me. It is an astoundingly cohesive and consistent experience from start to end, and bar the final track, which I still like but find to be somewhat uneventful compared to the rest, I have a negligible amount of criticism for the album. The first side/half of the LP is to me almost flawless, with the second very close behind. A zero-skip tracklist for me, and at least an 8.5/10 overall. Ordered one of the limited to 500 alternate cover art vinyl releases and cannot wait to receive it :)

Melon kind of touches on something that I’ve had trouble explaining about my feelings on the album- my favorite thing about CHVRCHES is how abrasive and inscrutable they could get for a synthpop group in their first and second albums. SV is full of highlights but it feels incredibly proficient and safe in a way that ends up making it kind of predictable. Better songwriting and production, for certain, but it feels like something was lost in the process.

Loved this album. Easily one of my favorite albums in a while. Strong 9/10 for me, but I'll probably look back on it in a few years and consider it a 10/10. Going into a CHVRCHES album, this is exactly what I'd hope for. Powerful and catchy melodies/hooks and huge synths. I love the fact that it feels like every song is trying to be a synth pop anthem, that's what I listen to CHVRCHES for. Lauren's vocal performance was amazing, and the writing was pretty strong throughout. As a whole, I feel like the album is pretty cohesive and flows well. I like how the energy slows down a bit in the 2nd half. He Said She Said, Final Girl, and Nightmare are the highlights of the album for me. It's exactly what I was hoping for when I heard the released a new album.

I'm a big fan of CHVRCHES and honestly I liked Love is Dead. I'm certainly aware that it wasn't the most novel and artistically remarkable album ever produced, but it bangs and I think that's most of what I'm looking for when I listen to CHVRCHES. After this album, I realize how much BETTER that listening experience can be when there's a lot more soul and creativity put into the work. IMO an outstanding effort from them. I recognize that Anthony puts a lot more emphasis on an album's overall structure and composition, more than just the individual songs on the track. I respect the art of the concept album and love a good one (Marianas Trench has 3 great ones), but I just don't put as much value on the "sum of all parts" aspect of an album I guess. 8/10 from me, personally.

Could not agre more with everything you said. I dig Love is Dead, not a stoppable track on there, but if I must put the records in any order it’ll be: SV, EOE, TBOFWYB, LID. YES!! I know anthony hasnt always been the biggest chrvches fan, but this project is honestly one of their best work, throwing back the very charismatic (almost nostalgic) synths more familiar with the debut through songs like the opener and Nightmare bridges. While it is also just all around more clever in writing for the songs and the album structure as a whole. Plus, personally, the guitars added such a beautiful organic feel to the common aesthetic of the synths the group is more known for. Really solid album and thanks for reviewing!

I really think either I’m missing the meaning of California, or you are. It has more of a bittersweet feel to it, and isn’t saying California sucks. It’s talking about how it can beat you down, but that those beat downs provide the freedom in finding out who you truly are. Plus they’re based in LA now, so I don’t think they’re saying California sucks.
@SmellFX2 жыл бұрын
If I got it right from interviews, California is mentioned in the song rather as a metaphor for a long dreamed goal that may actually very well ruin your life as you know it and force you to give up on the life and the people that you love, and that can very possibly suck and maybe you'd be better off by giving up on - or failing to achieve - your dreams. "Dying in California" means getting stuck in this supposed dream life and unable to ever go back. So I think both of you misunderstood it and both got some stuff right in a way?
