Also, shout out to their singer Jaret. I recently saw an article about them and noticed that he put on some weight since the last time I saw him. Apparently, he has depression and has started being open about it and how he's trying to get healthy again. Glad he's still performing and the band is still playing shows. Meet Me @ the Altar really is such a good band, so I'm glad to hear they did well here! Something I think the singer Edith does differently than some of the others here is that it sounds like she sings with the back of her mouth and throat open rather than closed. I'm not a vocal coach, just a recovering choir kid, so Idk if that makes sense. Try saying the short a sound vs the short o sound and you'll probably feel the difference in your throat. Point is, even though the tone's recognizeable for pop punk, singing in this way gives her voice more stability and strength to handle those upper/belty notes and makes it sound less whiny and thin like a lot of the other entries. Still...why does this compilation exist 😭

When are we getting the Disney hyperpop/breakcore album
@SuperInfinitezero00Ай бұрын
Thank you for the confirmation bias lol. I listened to this album as pretty much the exact target audience. I like BFS' "Goes to the Movies" and NFG's "From the Screen to your Stereo" Series. I'm a Millennial Disney kid that was into emo/pop/punk when I was a teen. I found this album to be pretty tepid, at best. I really am interested in who selected and approved the tracks because not only were the selections both obvious ("Let it Go") and confusing ("Colors of the Wind") at the same time, the quality both in layout and production was just all over the place. Some tracks sound so overproduced it really takes away from the aesthetic, where others sound like they've been sitting on a shelf since the late 90s and no one did a compression pass on them before this release. However, that being said, I do think there are some standouts and I enjoyed them. "I2I" is an easy one and I think its very clear that everyone knew it, as its the one they released to hype the album. "You'll Be in My Heart" was honestly shocking to me how good it was, as I anticipated it being terrible. It sounds almost like if Genesis had recorded the song and not just Phil Collins, in a weird way. I'll give an honorable mention to "Remember Me". ONLY because I hadn't ever watched "Coco" and was like, "Huh, this song is ok. Maybe I should watch Coco." And then did and really enjoyed it. So not only was it my first exposure to the song, but it led to me finding a really good movie. My review is a Generous 4/10, but I totally see why its less for most people.
@otiphanyvАй бұрын
I just wanted to say that your review is so accessible and well-written. I think we’re in the same demographic, and I was also a huge fan of NFG as a younger person. The song selection is kinda playing to a specific age demographic: I started to think that some Sherman brothers songs from Mary Poppins, Aristocats or Jungle Book might be fun as pop punk versions, but those are from another era than what this is obviously going for... But anyway that sort of ratio of good vs bad seems to be pretty expectable for many of these somewhat noveltyish VA tributes, one or two actually good and insightful songs, couple of kinda okayish ones and the rest is either derivatively dull or "what where they thinking". One can hope that the good ones are worth listening through the whole thing once, then you just pick them to a playlist and forget the rest.

Like Jeff Rosenstocks work for Craig of the Creek is genuinely amazing stand-alone music that genuinely works more for the show than any artist/genre would, like I haven’t watched a lot of the show bc I have adult things to do like taxes and emotional meltdowns but from the bits and pieces I’ve seen it’s a cute and fun show and literally anything besides Jeff or pop punk in general for a soundtrack would’ve been a disservice. Honestly same thing with What’s New Scooby Doo and fucking Simple Plan of all bands. crackpot theory for why Aladdin is on the album twice is because they wanted the last song to be the main song from Wish but after it flopped horrendously they had to pick another more beloved song at the last minute

The only explanation that this exists is this time traveled from early 2000. There can't be any other reason to do this in late 2024.

Where’s Fall Out Boy?! Patrick’s already doing the Spidey Kids soundtrack. They would’ve nailed ‘In Summer’!

They did cover “What’s This?” and “I Wanna Be Like You” before.

And they have Immortals from Big Hero 6. I can see Pete not wanting to be apart of this because FOB doesn’t ever want to make an album the same as their “last” album. He likely feels the same way. He was concerned about working with Neil again for Stardust because they didn’t want it to sound like Infinity or Folie or FUCT. FOB is also still touring arenas and stadiums. And they are a band who has a $1.3 million dollar guarantee per show… Most of these other bands needed the bread for sure. Warped Tour been over. Playing warped every year kept the lights on for a lot of these bands.

Thank you sm for covering this. I keep getting ads for it and every time I see it I’m like wtf is this is no one gonna talk about how nuts this is

Disney did a whole 90s Rap album too. It was about what you'd expect.

Bowling for Soup is a great band. They've worked with Disney before, namely doing the Phineas and Ferb theme song

On the topic of disney covers I want to shout out Suburban Legends for some pretty great Ska Covers of "Under the sea", "I just can't wait to be king" and "Duck Tales" They really went for it and deserve more recognition!

As an old pop punker with kids who love disney movies i never felt more targeted than when i saw this on spotify

I'm the target demographic too. I have "Let it Go" cover by New Found Glory on my primary play list.

Damn I feel bad about the whole new world cover. I saw Yellowcard over the summer and Ryan Key seemed genuinely excited to be on this project and talked about growing up near Disney world was a big deal for him.

I feel like pop punk cover of a Disney track is 100% in Bowling For Soup's wheelhouse. Also where are the Aquabats and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes?
@TangWuSnakeАй бұрын
Bruh. You think someone like Fat Mike is going to do a fucking Disney album. 🤣 "Punk" used to mean something. One thing it NEVER included was doing shitty covers for one of the biggest and most evil corporate entities in the entire world. Fuck that garbage.

Bowling for Soup's cover being the best doesn't surprise me. They did the Phineas and Ferb theme song and even did a cameo on the show. They know how to get zany and they don't take themselves too seriously.

This album is fun. I get to play pop-punk sounds for kids and they get excited that they know the songs. Not every cover is a banger, but some of them are genuinely great.

Listening to this just made me ask, why did they go for so many ballads and emotional songs? Why no villain songs? Does Disney know Pop-Punk is supposed to be fun and energetic? Why "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and not "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" or Why "Part of Your World" and not "Under the Sea?" Why "You'll Be In My Heart" and not "Strangers Like Me?" You only picked three fun songs, they are the best ones by leaps and bounds, how was this organized so poorly?
@blainebishop5913Ай бұрын
Somebody already mentioned “Under the Sea,” but I’d also really like to hear a ska version of “I Just Can’t Wait to be King.” Heck, “Prince Ali” could work too.
