I love the moment when Jameson shows integrity and doesn't sell out Peter. The character was already all kinds of fun but that little moment gives him some depth as well. He has strong convictions which happen to go against what Spider-Man does, but he is also a man with decent principles who will protect his people.

I don't know why people think its so odd that his aunt and uncle are older. for example, there is about a 25 year age difference between my youngest aunt and my oldest uncle on the same side of the family. add on to that peters parents may have been on the slightly older side themselves when they had him (lets say 30-35) that can could easily mean an age of around 70 for his aunt and uncle.
@jmacd8817
@jmacd8817 3 жыл бұрын
Regarding the old age of Ben and May… when this story was originally written, it was quite common for older families to have 10 or more kids. And, this means it was also easy to have siblings that differed in age by 15 or 20 years. If Peter’s parents (or one of them) were the youngest child of a large family, then Peter’s parents being maybe 35ish, and his aunt and uncle being in their 50s or even older, would be no big deal. Heck, it’s not even THAT old of a phenomenon… when I was in high school (late 1980s), my best friend was younger than his nephew. (His oldest sister was 19 years older, and had son when she was 17)

This movie follows the main parts of the origin of Spiderman pretty closely. "With great power comes great responsibility" is a quote from the comics from many, many decades ago. Peter Parker feels eternal guilt for letting a known armed robber loose when he could have stopped him so easily. When you think about it, anyone else that guy encountered could have been shot or killed in his mad dash to get away. That it was Peter's uncle is so ironic. Spiderman has been a very relatable superhero because of Peter Parker. Peter was a nerdy bookworm that was 'gifted' with superpowers. But, being a superhero ruins his life in so many ways. Unlike a lot of comics, Peter Parker's life was a big part of the comics. They sometimes read like Greek tragedies in that the writers heaped every burden they could on Parker. Sometimes he despaired. Sometimes he seemed to give up. But, he always got back up and tried his best no matter what. He went thru all the stuff a teenage boy, superhero, and very unlucky guy would go thru. So, every teenage boy could relate to Spiderman in a number of ways.
@markcarpenter6020
@markcarpenter6020 3 жыл бұрын
And that is why Peter Parker is called Spiderman and Miles Morales is called Miles Morales even after nearly a decade. Spiderman was about Peter's life not just about him being a superhero (which was true of all great superhero stories). It's not something as simple as a mantle or title that can just be handed over, which is something the modern comic book industry dosent understand.

Something that occurred to me watching this is how old the origin story is - You wouldn't have a modern hero compete in a pro-wrestling contest to earn money as everyone knows they are a work now. I'm not sure that was the case back in the 50s or whenever he was created. I think the better modern version would be to have him compete in something like a regional Ninja Warrior type contest, but I guess we'll have to wait for that reboot of a reboot of a reboot of a...!

This was released in theaters right after 9/11. So the New Yorkers fighting with Spider-Man was very sentimental. It's so weird watching people see this *after" all that films that followed it! It reminds me how much it blazed the trail. So many people talk about the Gollum/Smeagol scene in The Two Towers and forget that Spider-Man did the same thing a few months before, and the whole hero-becoming-the-villain from The Dark Knight... and your comment about "THAT'S Aunt May?!" 😆 Exactly my reaction when I saw Captain America: Civil War! I also seem to remember that there was quite a lot of controversy when this film got a PG rating at the cinema, with many parents being upset with how intense it was (it was re-released as a 12 certificate). Just imagine if James Cameron had made his version! He was going to go full adult action movie on it, which would've been mean, because Spidey is for the kids as much as anyone.

Also when Simone said she would die of fright if Spider-Man was carrying her around, that’s EXACTLY what Marvel went for at the end of Far From Home. Zendaya’s MJ looked really scared swinging with Spidey as a more natural response. I like how they took familiar scenes from the older movies and flipped them around like that. Another with the upside down kiss scene. Tom Holland Spidey didn’t get the kiss and fell down.

Peter Parker's value as a character was always how completely normal he is. He's just a guy, worried about school and girls and work and making rent and all that. The comics were basically a teen soap opera with super powers. He's much more relatable than, say, a billionaire playboy tech genius, or a 1950s soldier with an impossibly pure personal code. Peter Parker is just like the people who read the comic... with super powers.

OK so I learned from this reaction that the MCU has made a huge error, for not at all mentioning Uncle Ben, and why Peter is Spiderman. The fact that some people don't know that, is insane to me. It's like not knowing Batman's parents were murdered in front of him. Spiderman getting his butt kicked, is Spiderman, in the comics he gets the stuffing knocked out of him all the time, but he keeps coming back. The Juggernaut fight, is an amazing classic Spider-Man story for that. And Norman Osborne is crazy as hell to in the comics. And that death scene actually happens in the comics. And William Defoe's performance is incredible. Aunt Mae had always been an old grandmother forever, until recently. They made her a little younger in the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man, and the MCU followed that. And JK Simmons was also amazing. JJJ is actually a pretty complex character, seeing him not selling out one of his own is what makes him a very interesting character. Highly, highly recommend seeing Spider-Man 2.

Stan Lee has talked about that the first thing a person would do with superpowers is try to get rich. Peter suddenly has superpowers that will allow him to get money to get a car, to try and impress the girl he likes. It's a totally realistic and very human desire to first want to get rich quick. Which is why Spiderman resonates with so many, he has always been a very well written character, with normal human reactions and emotions.

"Willem Dafoe definitely stole the show." Agreed. He also snuck onto the set on the following films in the Raimi trilogy, and got filmed as an 'extra.' If by chance you have never seen it, another fantastic performance of his can be seen in "Boondock Saints."

I don't know if you guys know this or not. But Sam Raimi (the director of this film), was a horror movie director. Which is why that Norman Osborn transformation had that creepy background music. And why that finals fight scene between Spider-Man and the Goblin was so dark.
@spongeboymebob771
@spongeboymebob771 3 жыл бұрын
If you listen closely during his last "speech", you can hear Norman lapse back into the Goblin midsentence when he says "don't let him take me again!", he really did become Norman again when he took his mask off but you can tell after that sentence his voice is slightly more gravelly or raspy and his pitch is slightly higher, showing that the Goblin did in fact take him again, meaning after that point he was pretending to be Norman to his advantage. Also when he becomes the Goblin, his brow furrows a bit and his neck tilts forward slightly, plus his normally straight and white teeth become crooked and yellow. So for a brief second, Norman slips into the Goblin when he shouts "You know how much I sacrificed?!" Then right back to Norman. It's some really neat attention to detail stuff that they made for this movie and character.

The cast for this did an outstanding job. Sam Raimi really knows how to make a comic book movie if studios don't interfere and let him work. Legit my favorite comic book movie because it had such a good ratio of his character in and out of the suit. Actually makes the movie seem longer than it is. Very well done. Great pacing.

WRT the “you mess with one of us you mess with all of us” scene you have to remeber that this is set in New York and came out in 2002, when feelings were still pretty raw. I mean, it was close enough to 9/11 that for a couple of months there was a teaser trailer in cinemas featuring Spider-Man stringing some bank robbers up in a web between the Twin Towers. So that scene’s really about something other than the Green Goblin.

This was probably mentioned elsewhere, but Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy 15 back in 1962. David Koepp wrote the movie as far as credit goes, though Alvin Sargent did a lot of ghostwriting to polish it up. He came back to co-write the second and third film as well and was in his 70s when he was writing them!

Third reboot of Spiderman in about 15 years so Feige and Marvel decided that taking time to fully explain how Peter Parker became Spiderman by being bitten was unnecessary and a brief conversation between Peter and Tony in Civil War and another one between Peter and Ned in Homecoming was all that was needed.

stan lee and steve ditko were the creators of spider-man and they both definitely didn't write this movie. steve ditko had a bad falling out of marvel after he co-created doctor strange & spider-man. its pretty much confirmed that ditko hates stan lee's guts, their relationship was purely professional, there's even stories both of them wouldn't even meet each other at work but communicated through an assistant or something... so its pretty funny when simone said that stan lee and steve ditko were of the writers of this movie...

J Jonah Jameson is a gem of a character😂 The argument about vigilantes is very interesting because I think that it’s a very grey subject. From an outsiders point of view you can argue that they damage more than they help, that not being vulnerable to the law is going to be an issue that keeps on growing until that person thinks they are eventually above it and something terrible is going to come of it. From Peters point of view or for any Spider-Man like character, their self intentions are very clear to them. Save the people, stop the crooks/ villains. But also think about the damages that result in fighting for people with the help of superhuman abilities, sometimes it’s hard to justify wrecking half the city even if the intentions are good. I bet JJJ would be more eager to paint him as a hero if he worked directly under officers, who have the authority to do the exact same thing. It is very much dependent on how you look at it so it’s a debate that never seems to go anywhere because both sides are equally valid to each situation.

Jonah’s a complicated guy, on the one hand he hates people who wear masks on the other he is very fair a civil minded. For example in the comics Jonah has refused to print, racist or homophobic stories or state that mutants are wrong even when under both personal and professional threat. His irrational hatred of Spider-Man is rooted in his jealousy of the characters heroic nature and inferiority complex which makes him blind to the times he has been heroic when standing up for others

Jameson's a crazy bastard but he's not an a-hole. He lied to the Green Goblin about not knowing who took the Spiderman pics because it's one of his employees and also because Pete is a kid, and either reason is enough for him not to give him up to an insane supervillain.

Something to keep in mind while watching this movie is that Sam Raimi grew up reading the Spider-Man comics in the 60's and 70's, which was known as the 'Silver Age' of comic books. This was the era where both Marvel and DC focused a lot on Sci-Fi and what we today would regard as campy, silly stories, like Batman flying his own spaceship to the moon in order to fistfight aliens. Raimi's Spider-Man movies kind of serve as love letters to the Silver Age, so any camp or cheesiness you may see is most likely purely intentional. Uncle Ben and aunt May were an elderly couple in the comic books, so the Raimi movies are closer in that regard. Flash Thompson is also closer to his depiction in the source material, where he's more of a stereotypical jock bully rather than the douchebag cyberbully type he is in the MCU. In contrast there's also many examples where the MCU is more faithful to the source material, like having Peter use web-shooters rather than the web being created organically in his body and coming out of his wrists. In the comic books Peter developed an instinctive knowledge of what chemicals to use in order to produce the webbing after he was bitten by the spider, but he has to procure and mix the chemicals by hand, and load the finished webbing capsules into wrist-mounted web-shooters.

Maybe they're just really difficult and expensive to make? Norman: It was nice to test out that disintegration bomb on the Board Members. Now to just get another one for that pesky spider, if he declines my proposal. Bernard: Uh, actually, sir, that was the only one Oscorp could make. It took a lot of time and money to make just that one. Norman: Dammit! Oh well, I'll just use the razor bats, at least these were easier to make.

Heyo, so my schtick is giving trivia on stuff I know about certain properties so I thought I'd drop this: -Leonardo DiCaprio didn't make the cut as Spider-Man (evidently) but he recommended Tobey Maguire with whom he is childhood friends with. -The role of Spider-Man was going to go to Jake Gyllenhaal because Tobey Maguire was unlikely to make it. However Tobey ended up showing up to film. -James Franco auditioned for Spider-Man but he was cast as Harry instead which is a fine choice. -Peter's webs in the comics are actually not organic. The exception to this is Miguel O'Hara (Spider-Man 2099/Earth 928), Peter Parker from the Noir universe, and probably a lot more. -The balancing act with the food tray was real. Tobey took a hell of a long time to get the shot. -Joe Manganiello was bribed to actually clock Tobey Maguire in face in that scene in the hallway by the staff because apparently Tobey was being a prick or something. Joe didn't take the bribe. -In the comics, Spider-Man fought against Crusher Hogan instead of Bonesaw McGraw in the wrestling match. -A lot of people forget that Elizabeth Banks played Betty Brant lmao. -The scene with Green Goblin on the Washington Bridge is an homage to an iconic moment in comics when he caused the death of Gwen Stacy, Peter's first love. I'll leave a little more about her in the reaction to the third movie. -J. Jonah Jameson hates Spider-Man because of his mask and how it makes him unaccountable for his actions. His wife was also killed by a man in a mask. When he finds out Peter's identity in the mainline and Ultimate comics, he's pretty chill. -Mendel Stromm, the dude that Norman merced in his transformation scene is a villain named the Robot Master in the comics. He also appears in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
